This is bothering me…this morning right before work, Squirmy laid down, and almost immediately Verona was pawing him and made him get up. Right now, the poor little guy looks asleep on his feet, and every time his head bobs, she whacks him with her head.
Having watched how wary the two attendants were who came in to take off her tail bandage (with a third person standing outside the stall during this), and how promptly she swung her hindquarters toward the first person to approach her, I’m no fan of her either. I get the feeling that she’s very high-strung, don’t you? Overprotective, way overprotective.
Mandy keeps camping out with her hind legs spraddled and tail lifted, then walking around. Right now her butt’s toward the camera and it looks to me like her vulva are enlarged. Her bag sure is!
He does seem staggeringly exhausted. Part of me thinks that she’s so concerned for him that she wants him up and safe. But this is a professional operation that seems very well-run. I think if they thought he was in any danger they would intervene.
That’s what I was thinking too - but I have to admit, I’m starting to feel sorry for the little guy. He was just standing there, drooping, looking asleep on his feet and she walked up to him and gave him a little knee to the ribs to get him moving.
So apparently, not only does she not want him to lay down, she also doesn’t want him to stand still for very long.
I sent them an email and got a reply. Here’s mine:
Hi, I belong to a website and we’ve been watching your mare cams from the start of the season. We’ve recently watched Virona give birth to the colt and we’ve named him Squirmy, after his long trek from one end of the stall to the other, in his attempt to stand.
We are all wondering about his legs and hoping he will be ok. Virona seems very agitated and we’re wondering how she’s doing as well. We were all pleased with the professional way you folks handle the births.
Here’s their reply:
Hi Melissa,
Virona is a very protective mom but she will settle down. The colt (Dillinger) now nick named Squirmy is doing great. His legs are fine. He is just tired because she wont let him lay down. She is thinking like a mare in the wild right now. Fight or flight. Thinking if she keeps him up she can get him moving fast if something came after them. She is settling down more now and will get better each day. I am guessing she will let him lay down when everyone is out of the barn tonight. The vet was here today and gave her and the colt a clean bill of health.
Thanks for watching.
That makes me feel soooo much better. And I gave him his nickname so I’m extra special.
Squirmy’s down and this time mom is standing over him and leaving him be.
Okay, he’s flat on his side now. Camera’s going haywire. Looks like V is looking out the window above Squirmy.
Damn. She pawed him awake again. But it looks like this time he’s staying down despite it.
Damn. She keeps pawing him. Now he’s up again. He did get a longer time down, though, if only by a few minutes.
ETA: Meanwhile, Mandy got a blue bucket of feed from a teenage boy. Now large woman is sitting in there leaning against the wall while Many eats. Talking on cellphone.
I would be shitting myself right about now if I was the large woman. I hope she has some experienced help if this is going to be her first horse delivery. Anyway I’ll probably be shitting myself here, watching it!
