I am in the market for a long-wearing, put-it-on-and-forget-it lipstick. Any recommendations, anyone? My lips tend to dry out, so I have been afraid to try one. I hear they are better these days, so I thought I would see if anyone has tried one they would recommend.
I found a CoverGirl Outlast lipstick on clearance (50% off), and picked one up. I’m a college student on an extremely limited budget, so I couldn’t justify spending the whole $12 a full-price one costs.
I have to say that it’s pretty neat! It comes with two tubes. One is a liquid lip color with a sponge-tipped applicator. You carefully paint your lips and allow the liquid to dry (a minute or two). Then you use the second tube, which is a stick gloss. This adds nice shine and dimension, and moisture! You can ONLY use this gloss on top of the Outlast color, but it’s great. It doesn’t dry my lips out at all, and it stays on for hours and hours. It’s even pretty much completely stayed on when I’ve had fried, greasy food!
If you have dry lips, stay away from the paint on stuff. It will make your lips appear puckered and wrinkly. The gloss coat helps out, but I don’t think it actually penetrates the paint.
You can make any lipstick longwearing with this little trick, I’ve been doing it for 20 years and haven’t found anything that works better.
First you apply a drop of eye cream to your lips. It has absolutely no oils in it and you can get it pretty cheap if you don’t already use it.
Then you pat a tiny bit of Johnson’s Baby Powder on your lips. You won’t even be able to tell it’s there because it’s so fine. Face powder won’t work.
Then apply any lipstick (not gloss) and blot with a tissue. Then apply it again and blot again.
Then apply a thin layer of clear gloss. I use the one that came with the paint on stuff I can’t use. But any kind is okay.
Lasts all day!
Another vote for the Cover Girl Outlast.
I have extremely dry lips (I think I shed three layers of lip skin a day) and most other lipsticks cause my lips to peel and flake in hours.
The Outlast doesn’t. It’s wonderful. It stays on and on and on. At first I found I had to use baby oil to remove it at night. Then I realized that if you use pretty much any other kind of lip gloss over it it turns into “normal” lipstick that you can wipe off.
If you don’t like those long-lasting lipsticks , try Avon Glazewear. I put it on this morning at home about 7 am, it’s now 10:15 and so far has lasted thru two cups of coffee and 2 doughnuts. It smells really good too!
I don’t care for Outlast- it feels and looks weird to me. YMMV.
Lipfinity (I think Maybeline) also has a long lasting one. Similiar to the CG. I find it to last a bit longer, but it is INCREDIBLY drying on the lips.
I’ve found that MAC recently introduced a long wearing lipstick. It does last for hours on end, and isn’t as drying as the Lipfinity product.
I only use the long lasting lipstick. I can’t be bothered to keep checking on it all day.
Good luck and let us know which one you try!
I use both Max Faxtor Lipfinity and Revlon ColorStay. The Colorstay goes on lighter (doesn’t feel as weird) and I get more applications from it - the Lipfinity is so thick that it runs out very quickly. In terms of staying power, the Colorstay lasts as long if not longer than Lipfinity. It is nice that the Colorstay paint and gloss are both in the same tube so it is less stuff causing clutter in my make-up bag. However, the gloss isn’t as moisturizing with the ColorStay - it is a liquid, whereas the Lipfinity gloss is more like a Chapstick consistency. Since I have both, I have experimented and found that I get the best results using the ColorStay paint and Lipfinity gloss. You can buy the gloss separate from the paint for Lipfinity, so that is what I would recommend (and thereby negating the pro that ColorStay is all in one stick…)
My only other hint would be to watch your colors. They are so expensive so you can’t afford to buy a color you don’t like. I have found that the darker shades never turn out to what I want them to be - they are always too bright compared to the sample on the shelf. Whatever color you like, step back a shade in dullness and that will be the one that will look right. YMMV, of course.
I also agree that the best way to remove the color is to just apply regular lip gloss over it - it comes right off.
Another vote for Colorstay. I’ve had very good luck with it (and I have very dry lips, too). As the Lady mentioned, I use baby oil to remove it.
Another option you may consider if nothing else works well for you is a lip stain.
Go to www.sephora.com and type “stain” in the search bar. You’ll get several pages of results.
I do not have dry lips, but I use Revlon Colorstay as well. It doesn’t quite make it from 8-5, but it wears well for most of the day. I think they advertise 8 hours.
I find I have no use for the topcoat. It wears off quickly, and hell, I’m wearing long-lasting lipcolor for a reason—why would I want to keep reapplying gloss all day?
Yes, they are drying, so I can’t wear them daily, but I like the all-day, two-step variety. I tried Cover Girl Outlast after liking Lipfinity so much. It’s cheaper, so it was more appealing, but I don’t think the Outlast is anywhere near as nice. Maybe it’s the thickness (which someone else saw as a downside).
Clinique Superlast is good.
Thanks, everyone. I will try some out this weekend and post my humble opinion.
