I’m grateful that Netflix picked this show up. I was quite miffed when it was cancelled with absolutely no resolution to any of the plot lines.
I’ve not yet read the books, so can’t comment on them, but having spent considerable time in Wyoming and working with Wyoming residents, I can state that the show captures the character types and motivations well.
I’ll be interested to see where Netflix takes the story.
Craig Johnson, the author, lives in the tiny town of Ucross, WY, which is not far from Buffalo and near the foothills of the Big Horn Mountains. We visited Buffalo some years ago and drove down through Crazy Woman Canyon. His books have the authenticity of someone who is writing about a place and people that he knows and loves.
I like the series better than the books, which is rare for me.
My wife and I are bingeing on Season 4. I like it - it seems to have returned to the feel of the first season. [spoiler]I don’t know if I like the budding romance between Longmire and the psychologist. She says, when he asks her out, that she doesn’t want to spend her leisure time getting him to talk about his feelings, and then in the next scene does exactly that, and then they seem to be starting a relationship. It will be interesting, however, to see how Vic reacts to that.
I have a feeling I know what Henry Standing Bear is up to with the pliers and teeth, but it doesn’t bear thinking about.

And Robert Taylor is really, really good. He does the laconic Western hero without parody or irony. Lou Diamond Phillips is in some ways even better - no hint of Tonto in his portrayal, he is a character in his own right, even before the current story arc.
And they seem to be developing the reservation policeman (can’t remember his name, and I am afraid to Google for fear of spoilers) as more than just the surly “I hate white people” figure on the reservation. I wonder what they are going to do with Walt’s daughter and her volunteer work for justice for Indians. A romance with the res cop, perhaps? No doubt she will happen on evidence of a crime involving the corrupt owner of the casino, or something similar. But a great show - a soap opera with six-shooters.
The Lucian character is probably my favorite in the series. Good actor, good lines, and not overused. I’d love to see Virgil White Buffalo appear in the series, although I don’t know where they would find a FBI of his impressive proportions.
