looking for an old bbc series....

and how it ended …

when my grandma passed on about a decade or so ago I went back east for a month and the cable company were one of the first to have bbc America and one series I watched was called either “catching up or keeping up with the ___________” i forget the name of the family

But the plot of the show was rather convoluted heres what I remember :

The dad was a sob that banged every thing that moved and disliked just about everyone he was related to wife was tired of it and finally threw him out and taking him to the cleaners

Mom owned her own business which I never figured out what it was and was having a go with a brother in law which was making the kids mad

the eldest teen daughter was pretty much a lesbian who was ripping off the moms business for her affair with a older married woman (who seemed to be using her for the sex and money buying her new baby stuff) and was married to a family friend

the youngest daughter was the normal nosey know it all 12 year old pain in the ass (think of the youngest daughter in modern family)that most shows like this have (the character whos main use is to reveal all of the above to everyone else)

the strange thing is sometimes it came off as comedy … like when the daughters gf’s husband realized she was having an affair and came crying over to the mom because he realized marrying a barely out of hs girl because she was pregnant wasn’t a good idea and shes giving him all these tips as the daughter slowly realizes who hes taking about (the actress had a nice range of facial expressions all the while) and he starts threatening to kill his wife and her lover if he ever found out who she was with …

I just wanna know what happened when it all headed to the inevitable blowup … like the mom was starting to notice the books were off the daughters sort of gf was threating to tell mom who she was sleeping with and the youngest daughter was sort of blackmailing everyone in various degrees to get what ever she wanted to …

At Home With The Braithwaites?

Is it Keeping Up Appearances?

Was it Shameless?

Yes, this has to be what you’re thinking of. I really liked it. It has some of the UKs best character actors in it: Amanda Redman, Peter Davison, and Julie Graham are always good value.

Absolutely not!! I don’t know what it is, but Hyacinth Would. Not. Have. Any of those shenanigans going on around her. At least, not if she could help it. What would people think, what with her social standing??

(Looking forward to the KUA prequel and hoping it’s on BBC America or PBS.)

that’s it… seems I was watching in the of it and wasn’t catching it all like I only remembered 2 daughters… but it didn’t get much of an ending tho

thanks tho

Glad to help. I’ve never seen it myself, so I’ll probably look it up now - it sounds worth a shot. It it’s good, I’ll have you to thank

Fwiw, I googled “BBC series philandering husband lesbian daughter”, and that’s how I found it.
