Looking for new music similar to Weezer

I have a gift card and I want to buy some CDs , I am looking for music similar to Weezer since they are one of my favorite groups. I like a lot of other groups too such as the Who, 10,000 Maniacs,Paramore, Camper Van Beethoven, Fall Out Boy, White Stripes and OAR if that helps you know the music I like.

(please stay on topic and don’t tell me your opinion on Weezer or other groups I listed)

Which Weezer do you like? Blue album, pinkerton, or the stuff they have put out more recently?

I ask because those are thee different sounds and will get different answers.

I like all of their albums, I guess the older stuff like the blue album is a little better than their recent stuff.

I wish I had more time to respond but my first thoughts are to check out Fountains of Wayne or Beulah if you’re not familiar with either of them already.

I have heard of FOW but not Beulah, thanks for the ideas.

Um, I’d say it wouldn’t be too hard to just kick on a Pandora channel of Weezer when you’re hanging around to see if you hear anything new.

Maybe OLP? Although they are a little different from Weezer.

OLP = Our Lady Peace I assume? I will give them a listen too. Pandora is another good idea.

OK, well first and most obviously you want to check out *Nada Surf *and *Cake *to get the other bands who were doing similar “nerd rock” types of things as Weezer in the early/mid 90s. You might also like Supergrass, it all sort of depends on what it is you like about Weezer. Maybe Super Furry Animals or Parklife era Blur too.

You also might want to check out some of the obvious Weezer influences like The Breeders or Dinosaur Jr. or The Replacements (I am assuming that you already know the works of the more famous influences like The Cars.)

You may like some of the other Alternative bands that were putting out material at the time of Pinkerton that helped shape and change their sound. Guided By Voices and *Pavement *are the two bands that spring to mind right away. Maybe Faith No More also, or one of Mike Patton’s side projects like Tomahawk (Mr. Bungle is great too, but very avant guarde and maybe not to your taste. If you find you reallyl like *Faith No More *and/or *Tomahawk *check out the Bungle album California as it is the most accessable of their work.) Based on the Camper Van Beethoven you might like *Ween *also.

As for slightly more modern bands, you may want to check out The Gore Gore Girls, The New Pornographers, Wolf Parade and maybe Art Brute.
None of the above is “like Weezer” but they are all either influences or share influences or were influenced by the scene that Weezer was part of at one point in time.

YouTube songs by a few of these bands (or if you already know the band say something about how you feel about them), let us know what you do and don’t like and we can probably give you some more narrow results.

Rooney sounds so much like early Weezer that Rivers Cuomo should feel stalked.

Ben Kweller’s first CD, Sha Sha, sounds a lot like early Weezer. So much so, that I thought it was Weezer when I first heard it. It’s very good in it’s own right, though, as is his second self-titled CD.

The Cars ? You mean the band with that ugly guy who married a supermodel? And they are still married 20 years later. I do like the Cars.

Supergrass springs to mind for me, too.

When I was working the door at the bar that i work at on the weekends, i heard this band called Brave UlyssesBRAVE ULYSSES on myspace from Chicago

the first reaction to them that they sounded like early weezer and someone said they were doing a great job at dinosaur jr’s sound. and they def. cite both bands as influences. check them out they are great

I love Weezer but have a hard time naming a similar band. There are other bands that are superficially similar, but they don’t match Rivers Cuomo’s chops as a songwriter. However, the first thing that came to mind is The Pixies, since they are clearly a big influence, especially on the Blue album, and the second thing that came to mind is Wilco, not because they sound anything like Weezer, but because they are also really fucking good.

You could do worse than to check out last.fm’s list of bands that people who listen to Weezer tend to like.

Hmm.

For the melodious and heavy combination especially on the early albums, I would say Cheap Trick.

For the guitar-noise filled, heavier early 2000s albums, I’m going with Oasis - Definitely Maybe.

Does…not…compute…brain…asplode. Their first couple albums were extremely influenced by the heavier guitar around in those days. While you still see some influence in their 2000s stuff, at least what I’ve heard, there isn’t really that grunge-y sound of the mid-90s.

How is Definitely Maybe “grunge-y”?

I’m just going with that they both have droning guitars, and that Definitely Maybe is a great and action-packed album, so I think the OP would like it.

I meant early Weezer albums. Stuff I heard in 2000s from them does not have as much heavy guitars (while at the same time granted not having as much power-poppy stuff, maybe they just averaged out :))

I tend to think of Weezer and the Dandy Warhols as being pretty similar.
