So, did Sawyer use his assumed or real name to get his ticket? If he used his real name, there’d be another discrepancy in the manifest…
Can I just note that he didn’t say “Ontario, Canada”. There are a lot of towns in the us called Canada too. This I know because we sued to have a client with a bad habit of trying to ship stuff to us in Ontario, CA (which is Ontario, California).
I am the only evil from Ontario. I shall not be dethroned. If you try, I’ll eat your brains.
She had been attcked earlier in the episode (which may or may not have been a nightmare). The first time she woke up screaming it was defnitely a nightmare, the second time, it looked as if someone was pinning her down. At the time she claimed it was too dark to see the man that attacked her, but the Significant Look she gave Ethan suggests she was thinking “a-ha, that’s the dud that tried to get me – he’s got the evil eye twinkles and the brain-eating grin of doom!”
As for Alex – Note Danielle the French CatLady said “Alex was my son.” She never said he was born on the island. So Alex could be a heckuva lot older than just 16.
Ethan could be Alex, or he can be one of the Voices that Whisper.
Er, used to have a client. We never “sued” him.
I can’t remember - do we even know exactly how long Danielle has been on the island? 16 years is just how long the distress signal has been running, and that was started after everyone else in her group “died”.
Also, I am now officially lusting after Emilie de Ravin.
If Ethan is Alex, that would mean he was a teen when Danielle’s team got stranded on the island. Also, if he was the guy who attacked Claire, didn’t it look like there was a syringe involved in the attack? He could have been trying to induce labor or inject the island virus. Which leads me to my worry about Sayid. What the heck did Danielle inject him with? I know some sedatives but there could have been something else.
My personal theories are the reason why the baby could be evil is that the kid could get off the island and spread the virus OR he/she could develop an immunity that has far-reaching side effects. I also bet Locke knew about The Others for a while. They probably helped him catch his first boar.
Well, one difficulty with this theory is that assuming the Psychic really did foresee the future, then why would he deliberately send Claire to the island? He supposedly put her on that particular flight because he knew it’d crash on the island and then Claire would definitely raise the child and avoid whatever unintended consequence he foresaw if the child were to be raised by another.
That’s part of the fun of psychic plotlines… the psychic may not have realized that the danger was on the island. He saw that Claire had to raise the child alone and was trying to keep her from giving him up for adoption there in australia.
What he DIDN’T see was that the danger was on the island, and that the kid was fated to grow up on the island because he himself would manipulate circumstance accordingly. He thought that after the crash, Claire would have no choice but to raise the kid herself.
Self-fufilling prophecies (or prophecies that have a partially self-fufilling element at any rate) are Neat!!
Welcome, brother!! (I’m assuming brother… not to say that a woman can’t lust after Emilie )
Yes, it’s brother.
No we don’t really know. When Sayid told Danielle that the message had been running for about 16 years, she was amazed. She doesn’t seem to have a sense of how long she has been there either. She didn’t say how long she and her team had been stranded there when she made that message. So they have been there at least 16 years, but probably longer.
Like maybe it was 4 or 10 years before anyone went all Lord of the Flies with the zombie virus. Assuming there’s a virus. And assuming there are zombies. And assuming there are flies (I haven’t actually seen any… :dubious: )
I don’t think she had to recognize him to realize who he was, he was giving them a really creepy look.
I always thought that guy seemed creepy but even though I am suspicious of everyone else I wasn’t putting it together. I think I was still hung up on suspecting one of the main characters. But we didn’t meet Ethan until recently, right? So the comment from the producers after the first couple episodes that “we may have already met someone who wasn’t on the plane” was a red herring. We hadn’t met the guy yet. The other thing that should have tipped me off was that Ethan was too damn helpful. He knew how to hunt and set traps, he was always collecting firewood or fruit and was pretty good at it. He even had a handmade basket for the fruit, where the hell did he get that? That should have been a clue, all the other castaways spend as much time being useless as they spend being useful (if they spend any time being useful), even Locke spends a lot of time sitting around looking wistful or lurking in shadows.
Another thing about Locke, I think he might have been a bit insulted that he wasn’t let in on some of the secrets the others had found out (such as the distress call) and maybe he lurks around a lot now so he doesn’t miss out on what’s happening.
Finally, I wanted to throw out something that I read about the show I’ll spoiler box it but even though it came from a producer it doesn’t give much away but it may add more fuel to our speculation. If people choose to discuss it out of the spoiler boxes that’s fine by me. I did include some of my spec about this in the box.
It may have been Abrams or the other guy involved that said that all the passengers were connected in some way, either directly or through a third party.
I wonder if Jin being behind Jack in line at the airport qualifies as a connection?
This also made me wonder if Jack could have been one of Locke’s doctors when he was paralyzed? It’s possible that they may not recognize each other, since from what I understand surgeon’s don’t spend much time with the patient when they are conscious. Doctor’s also see a lot of patients so I’m sure it can become a blur, it’s also possible Locke does recognize him but doesn’t want to say anything to Jack about it. The other possibility is that Jack’s dad operated on Locke and screwed up because he was drunk, paralyzing him.
Nitpick: Danielle said Alex was her “child”, not “son.” Still leaves the possibility that it’s a female child.
And Emile is quite the screamer, isn’t she?
Great episode. In contention with Tabula Rasa for best ever.
A few random thought:
-
When Hurley was saying his real name, I was sitting there whispering “Don’t say Hobbes, Don’t say HOBBES!” I think Roger Mudd is on to something about the source of the nickname.
-
The Hurley/Sawyer moment felt like something out of Paradise Lost. The Devil and God talking. Hurley IS the only one to get to Sawyer so far. “You need the points.” Awesome. Hurley IS God! Though the “Stay Puffed” reference could hint at wish fulfillment.
-
WAG- All of this points to Claire’s baby as the anti-Christ. God and Satan have created a pocket universe at the edge of creation to fight it out once and for all…with polar bears… Maybe not…
-TWO chilling moments! (A) When they flashback to the psychic and Claire’s voiceover said “HE KNEW!” I was still under the same impression as Larry Mudd (two Larry Mudd shoutouts. Take a bow, Larry!) that he was a baby trader. IT seemed like a con game. It still could be, but it looks less likely. (B) Even though I knew it was coming, Tom Cruise’s cousin scared the hell out of me with that blank/pure evil look.
-
I love that Hurley is making the same “Scott and Steve” jokes we’ve been making. I have a feeling it will be a running thing.
-
Did anyone else see the attacker as wearing a gold banded watch?
-
I think what found Locke was the whole Island experience, not necessarily the creature.
-
Did anyone think that eventually Claire would wind up signing the paper with a pen that had red “ink?”
-
I think we’ll have to forgive the cleanliness of the cast. I don’t WANT too look at dirty, ugly people. I like Shannon looking pretty.
-
Does anyone still have their scars?
-
Chalk me down as a guy who doesn’t think Ethan is Alex. I think he is one of the “others.” And a correction to Eats_Crayons, I think she said Alex was her “child” not son. There has been some speculation that Alex isn’t a human at all.

Finally, I have one worry about the series. Now that it seems the survivors will have to get more defensive against the threat of the island. I worry that the breazy moments of the series will be lost. Hard to play golf when you are worried about brain eating zombies.
Re: Why some people are clean and wearing clean clothes. Perhaps Michael made his shower system that he had been designing? If not they may be able to clean them selves up a little on the surface with rgas and water but we can’t smell them so we don’t know if that’s an all over clean.
As for the clothes, they not only had there own luggage if they were able to find it but numerous bags of “unclaimed” luggage to use.
Is it the same watch as the one that caused the Korean guy to try to kill Michael?
I waste more time on Thusday mornings because of this show …
I get a kick out of how they seem to be answering a lot of questions on the show that we bring up here. Sure they can’t be reading these boards and then going back and reshooting episodes to accomodate us, but still it almost seems like that’s what they’re doing which just makes it more fun.
I remembered something else I wanted to spec about. Perhaps the “others” are some sort of weird religious cult that was already on the island, even before Danielle and her group? Maybe this illness isn’t really a virus but basically being taken in and converted by the cult. Perhaps they had some sort of prophecy that their future “leader”, anti-Christ, god, anti-pasto or whatever would arrive on the island at such and such a time as a baby and they needed to be there and be ready for him. And they needed to raise him. This would explain the interest in Claire, since she is the only pregnant one. Maybe the psychic even knows about the cult and was in on it? Or maybe not.
I tend to think that the others aren’t necessarily brain-eating zombies or they would have just started picking off the survivors one by one a long time ago. They haven’t exactly been careful.
Did anyone else wonder if the “blurry thing” the psychic saw was the “monster” on the island.
Also, maybe the “monster” isn’t bad? Remember Danielle said there’s no such thing as monsters. Perhaps the pilot (or co-pilot) was a bad guy who was part of the cult and crashed them on the island on purpose? So maybe the “monster” is trained or programmed to seek out the cultists, or those “infected”. The pilot is the only one to have been harmed by the thing.
Outlandish speculation is fun!
As Wile E mentioned earlier, they have all that unclaimed luggage. Surely, someone had shower gel or soap in their bags. I pack shampoo and shower gel when I travel so it’s possible that they have some stashed away somewhere.
I also like a shower gel that isn’t available in the U.S. When legolamb last visited me in the states, he brought me four large bottles of my favorite shower gel. And I picked up another two when I was traveling.
Didn’t Danielle warn Sayid to “keep an eye on the others” (or something like that)?
Actually, IIRC, Danielle told Sayid to “watch your people” or something to that effect. I don’t think she used the term “the others.”
