LOST 1-21-09 "Because You Left"/"The Lie"

And if the island moved near Africa in the 90s during one of the flashes, that would be a good explanation why the plane from Nigeria got to the island.

Remember when Tom was saying to someone, “…But then the sky turned purple?” About what and to whom was he talking then? I feel like he was saying something about why they couldn’t leave the island, or something… I don’t know. It just occurred to me, and now I’m a little curious.

I wouldn’t be so sure. He has returned since then. Remember him being the scared father when the girl died and seemingly returned to life. I think it was Eko as a priest investigating a possible miracle. That leads me to believe we are not done with him.

I think Lost’s audience has shaken off the non-believers. Anyone still watching this rollercoaster after four seasons is pot committed to the end.

My thinking was that they were Widmore employees, in a future time when Widmore has wrested the island back from Ben. But if what we’re being told about not being able to alter time is true, that would mean that Widmore eventually wins, so Ben’s efforts to do whatever it is he’s now trying to do are doomed to failure…

I figured by “special” Daniel meant that past-Desmond wasn’t going to jump through time like the rest of them the next time the white flash occurred, because he wasn’t from the present when the frozen donkey wheel was turned.

I realize this is kind of a joke, but it brings to mind a more serious point. While I was glad these episodes moved at a faster pace and revelaed more than we’ve been getting, the basic frustrations many of us had about this show are still there; i.e., no one asks the big questions. Something crazy happens, and someone asks Juliet “hey, what was that,” she replies “I don’t know,” and they just drop it, instead of saying, “wait a minute, you lived with these people for however many years, and you’re telling me you don’t know anything about WTF is up with this island?” Ben shows up off-island and tells Jack they all need to go back or bad stuff will keep happening, and he just says “OK” instead of “hey, wait a minute, mind sitting me down and telling me exactly why and how you know this, in other words, WTF is up with that island?”

Also, as others have mentioned, they haven’t given any indication that they’re going to explain old mysteries (Adam and Eve, the Black Rock, why the Dharma Initiative still has an off-island presence that still makes food drops to the island.) The show still keeps me interested, but I don’t have high hopes that we’re going to get most of our big questions answered.

I would love to see a feature on the last-season DVD, with Ben explaining things to Jack in the way that The Architect explained things to Neo:

Would Jack rush back in time and keep the plane from crashing? Or would he choose love in the face of his people’s own destruction?

Yeah, that is getting to be a bit much.
The camp disappears and Sawyer asks Daniel “What’s going on?”
Daniel: “Mmmmm, it’s complicated, hard to explain, yada, yada.”
Sawyer slaps him in the face, “Tell me what’s going on!”
Daniel: “Well, see, the island is like a record, and it spins, and well, see, it kind of skips…”
(mine added) Sawyer punches him in the gut “What’s wrong with saying ‘we went back in time’, is that so hard to say. Not too complicated of a concept now is it.”

It’s especially ridiculous when you think about how long the people have been on the island; even when they were struggling for food and shelter, they have very little to do other than talk to each other - there’s no TV, very few books, and no Internet. After they find the hatch, there’s even more time to talk to each other. After a few weeks, they should all be very familiar with each other’s life stories, and should have discussed all the mysteries of the island ad nausem.

Okay, wait a minute… this just made me think of something. If there are people from the tail section hanging around with the Others (the stewardess is the one I recall seeing most often), why are they sticking with the Others and not time-jumping with Locke?

Really? I’m sure they’re not going to explain everything, but I think we’ll probably get an explanation for Adam & Eve and the Black Rock, and at least some more info on Dharma.

They actually talked some about this in one of the two most recent video podcasts. I don’t remember exactly what they said, but they basically reaffirmed a statement they made before that they do intend to explain the old mysteries, but they put a sort of winky gloss on it: define “explain” and “old mysteries.”

I’m wondering if the new others go through some initiation that “sticks” them to the island. And maybe when Juliet got that tattoo (that did look similar to the frozen donkey wheel) she was “unstuck”.
