Lost 1.9, "Solitary" (SPOILERS)

Didn’t anybody else see the elephant trunk reaching in the window of Danielle’s hut right after the roaring sounds started?

What kind of science trip was it? Did it involve either polar bears or diseases?

Brian

You know, I thought I saw that too…

But then I didn’t see it again (and I don’t have one of those fancy recorder things) and I thought I was probably crazy.

YES! And I was positive that Sayid saw it, but then neither he nor Danielle acknowledged it. Did you think they saw it?

During the Locke episode, there was some speculation that whatever Locke saw at the end might have possessed him (I would link to that previous thread but I’m lazy tonight). Could that be what the French lady meant when she was talking about being careful about the others and sickness and “carriers” and whatnot?

Sayid looked mighty fine in that “communications” officer outfit, Juniper200, mighty fine indeed.

Rich Mann, I thought I saw an elephant trunk too. Hmmm. I’ll have to rewind and rewatch tomorrow.

I. Cannot. Wait. Two. Weeks. For. Next. Episode. Stupid Thanksgiving.

Is sweeps week the next episode, when it looks like we might have a wee castaway arriving? And what exactly will Claire give birth to? (cue ominous music)

Rich, I thought that was an elephant trunk also. Glad it wasn’t just me!

No spoilers, just WAG: I’m thinking that the “sick” is an invasion of the body snatchers type deal, and it’s started taking over the castaways already. Maybe Locke when he first came upon the “monster”? And Danielle had to kill her crew to protect her child Alex and herself from being taken over. And also to avoid it spreading off the island.
I’ll put my guess on Alex’s identity in a spoiler box, because it’s partially based on some prior speculation from a spoiler site:

My guess is Hurley is Alex. He seems awfully focused on getting people to play with him. Info from a spoiler site said that they hadn’t seen any flashback clips on the plane where Hurley was visible.

Damn, this was a good episode! And Sayid is the hunkiest evil torturer evah!

Oh, and next week is the 2 hour finale of The Bachelor starting at 8.

The “elephant trunk” was the crazy lady’s arm as she was putting on a sweater.

Misnomer,
The editing suggested that Sayid saw the trunk. He was looking to his right front at Danielle and then looked to his left front and up towards the light source (presumably the window). The next cut was the trunk. It does seem strange that he didn’t mention it to her though, doesn’t it?

I rewatched it several times at 1/15 speed on my DVR, and I don’t see what else it could have been.

My first thought was that Alex was Hurley – He and Danielle have the same hair – but where would he have gotten those speech patterns?

RikWriter,
My bad. I just looked again and I can see that you’re right. Good call.
It would have been better with an elephant, though. (sulks)

The hut scenes reminded me of the Myst cutscenes.

She is so HOT! Except for, you know, the insanity. And the not-taken-a-proper-bath-in-sixteen-years part.

Anybody else notice the similarity between the names Danielle and Delenn?

Not to mention that if he was Alex and grew up on the island, would he be that familiar with golf?

Great ep. Gives us a lot of insight into Sayid’s complexity, how much he wanted to save Nadia, who may still be alive. Still doesn’t tell us how he wound up in Australia, but it was seven years after he turned her loose. I guess the others bought his story.

The golfing brought some welcome humor to offset the rougher stuff. I really don’t like any interrogation scenes, though I know they are necessary to this storyline.

Oh, I have a bad feeling about little Walt and that big knife, but I understand his desire to have a father figure pay some attention to him. I couldn’t imagine Locke wanting to play golf anyhow!

Her name is Rousseau! You know, like that fellow who maintained that the root of all crime and injustice is the imposition of erroneous and unreasonable ideas by artificial social insitutions, and that human beings that are free from those influences (“Noble Savages”) are without these conspicuous flaws. Of course, these fine ideas, together with those of John Locke’s, led to the bloody excesses of the French Revolution. (All for the best, of course.)

The “infection” that she sees is almost certainly the desire to dominate and control through force of arms. That’s what she’s warning Sayid against.

Cool.

Antigen, I wasn’t grumbling about your post-- just opining on the rules as they are. I hate knowing what’s coming next week, and I don’t trust the folks who put the “Next week on…” scenes not to blow the dramatic tension of the episode. Makes it a struggle for me to read these threads… “In the preview, the gn…” AVERTING OF EYES!! SKIPPING OF POST!! Of course, if I’m in the minority here, that’s cool. Seemed to be the majority opinion in the 24 threads, so I was asking if it bothers anyone else.

I thought it was an elephant’s trunk also.

The disease that the French crew had is suspicious considering New Guy’s rash. Who the hell is he anyway?

Why was Danielle asking Sayeed “Where is Alex” in German? Was she asking in several different langauges? I only heard English and German.

She was going through all the languages she knew. I wasn’t sure what she was saying until she got around to “Donde está Alex?”

I really think that the new redshirt’s rash really was just hives. The biggest subplot to the episode was Hurley saving everyone from their stress and anxiety by giving them a trivial pastime for healthy distraction.

She did seem to be cycling the languages at the beginning there…

Regarding the earlier spoiler box…

I had noticed that and he knew about the polar bear when it clearly had not gotten around which I thought was really suspicious. I wasn’t sure if I had just missed him but he’s a tough guy to miss in a crowd. I don’t see him really with any sinister motives or trying to get people to stay, he genuinely seems to be trying to be helpful.

I’m really looking forward to where this series is going. After several weeks of character stories that didn’t really advance the big plot (though really well told character stories) I get the feeling that anything could happen next. I can’t wait…

As for what the cable led to out in the ocean, its likely some sort of generator powered by the waves/tides, obviously built out of parts scavenged from the boat. The “Lost” group obviously lacks a “Professor” type.

I missed the elephant. :frowning:

I found it hilarious that the golf game was just Hurly, Charlie, Doc, and the Black Guy for the longest time. Uh, guys, there are 40 or so other people who might be interested…

Looks like our Iraqi friend spoke too soon when he said he wasn’t sick. Poor fellow.
