Lost 1.9, "Solitary" (SPOILERS)

Thanks. I was trying my best to pay attention, but I’ve had a cold the last few days and I’m not hearing things as well.

More wish-fulfillment this week, I thought.

Sayid was (arguably) looking for absolution after his history as a torturer. What better way to receive it than to do penance – to be tortured himself, for information he did not possess. (The location of “Alex.”)

Was the French lady really just a wish-fulfillment hallucination?

Oo! Like the 80s movie D.A.R.Y.L..

Reading thru this thread makes me realise I need to go back and watch this episode again. Thank God I taped it. I just KNEW this was going to be a good one.

I don’t see how Hurley could be Alex. He’d never talk like that growing up on the island, and I doubt he’d be so “well fed”.

A.L.E.C.K.S = A Large Evil Castaway Killing Species :dubious:

Wait, Alex can’t be the monster. We heard “Raaaaarh!” Danielle said “We better hope it’s a polar bear.” I don’t think she’d ask where’s “Alex the TCM”, if she already knows that there’s a TCM out there already (or at least the thing that’s scarier than a polar bear.)

I wonder if there’s more than one TCM?

Didn’t see this brought up in the thread, but does anybody have more thoughts on who sabotaged Sayid’s attempt to find the transmission? Danielle sure looked surprised to find Sayid, and was desperate to keep his company. I don’t think it was her.

So who clocked Sayid on the head? Obviously, it was someone who didn’t want Sayid to find the source of the transmission, but if it was an island dweller, why was he protecting the source? And the attacker obviously could have killed Sayid, but did not. Could this have been Alex? The “Others”?

Also, if the attacker didn’t want anyone to find the transmission, why not shut it down at the source? Could it be a lure of some kind?

EZ

Danielle sure looked surprised to find Sayid, and was desperate to keep his company. I don’t think it was her.[/spoiler]I agree. Plus, she was shocked to hear there were other people (and not the Voices that Whisper) and if she found Sayid due to the bottle rockets going off she’d have to presume there were others. And I also don’t think she’d necessarily destroy the transmitter and other equipment without finding out what it was and if she could benefit, first.

Now that is a really good question! Clearly it’s not helping anyone get rescued so it’s kind of pointless to still have it running. If Danielle didn’t want to be found, it probably wouldn’t still be going (then again, she is coacoa-puffs). And you’re right. Why didn’t the MIPUM just kill Sayid? (Although you can’t get information from a corpse.)

I actually brought this up, (bottom post page 4) and was waiting to hear people’s thoughts.

MtM

Crap! Lemme try that again for legibility.

Now that is a really good question! Clearly it’s not helping anyone get rescued so it’s kind of pointless to still have it running as a mayday signal. If Danielle didn’t want to be found, it probably wouldn’t still be going. Then again, she is coacoa-puffs, and she did look a little surpirse when he told her he heard her distress signal.

And you’re right. Why didn’t the MIPUM just kill Sayid? (Although you can’t get information from a corpse.)

Let me say this just one more time since a few people don’t seem to have seen it…I tivoed this episode, and there WAS NO ELEPHANT. What sort of looked like an elephant’s trunk was the French lady’s ARM as she put on a grey sweater.

I kind of figured it was Locke. He’s having the time of his life on the island and probably figures that if he leaves, it’s back to the wheelchair.

Maybe. I agree that it’s more likely a castaway because a true Bad Guy would probably have killed Sayid or simply turned off the transmission if they could.

I’m not entirely sure about Locke though. Since the transmission had been broadcasting with utter futility for the past 16 years, what would it matter if they were able to find its source? If the others were rescued, Locke wouldn’t necessarily have to go with them (unless he thinks that somehow they are all part of some greater island plan.)

However, Locke is giving me the creeps lately. And I could see him thinking the island is “special” and there was a master plan. So I kinda could see him trying to thwart rescue “for their own good” if he feels that the island can “save them” in a metaphysical kind of way.

Or maybe… when he saw the TCM (as we think he probably did), he got bitten by the Alex Werewolf Monster, and is starting to be “sick” – the slow decline to “Braaaaaiiiins…” Danielle did warn Sayid to “watch your people”. Although she was confusing, it suggested that some sickness required her to kill others, or that perhaps the others became violent because of sickness and had to be killed (more in self-defense). I got the impression from her that it wasn’t your standard physical illness with fevers and sores, but something that made you dangerous.

Maybe the “sickness” makes you delusional. Perhaps Danielle is a carrier who hears whispering voices in the jungle (now Sayid seems to be hearing them too after hanging out with her), but that Locke or another castaway is actually sick. Locke saw the eye of the island and it was “beautiful”… delusion?

Sayid asked her “do I look sick?” She said “No.” But that could mean that he is speaking rationally, coherently and calmly, as opposed to trying to eat her brains.

Or maybe you do get physically sick too and Mr. Itchy will be the first to go bonkers.

It can’t be an actual physical illness…this is all way too metaphysical for that. I just hope this isn’t the last we see of Mira Furlani.

See the Lost Qs thread for why I think the conker could still be Danielle.

As for the voices…

Danielle is clearly bonkers. 16 yrs alone with imaginary monsters is pretty tough to deal with. So, she hears voices. Saayid was drugged, still feeling effects of drugs (poison?) and power of suggestion allows him to share Danielle’s invisible people delusion.

Or…,

Remember after the first ep? When we all speculated about the TCM and I offered the idea of Monsters From The Id? Perhaps the show will get metaphysical. Or it may get StarTrekical, having differents planes (NYUCK!) of existence.
Alex is either another delusion, an as yet unintroduced character, or someone we’ve all met already. If it’s someone we’ve all met, I vote for Hurley. I have yet to see him in any flashback aboard the plane or just prior to boarding.

As I understand it, the reason for finding the source of the transmition was so that they could find its power source. Then, they could rig up their own distress signal. Of course, whoever attacked Sayid wrecked his equipment. I think this was the real reason behind the attack. Not to hurt Sayid, but to make sure they can’t send out their own signal. This suggests it is someone who wants to stay on the island. The number one candidate for this, so far, is Locke.

Does anyone have tapes of all the episodes so far? I’ve missed so many and don’t know how to get them. I know I’ve missed the first 3 and last week. I think I missed another one somewhere in there too.

I’ll be happy to pay the shipping to get them to me and back to you. I promise I wont keep them! I just want to watch them.

Even though I’ve only seen a tiny bit, I love this show!!! I don’t want to have to wait for reruns to find out what I’ve missed!

If what she said was true, it’s very unlikely that their group is behind the TCM, isn’t it? And therefore Alex being the TCM.

They were shipwrecked - why would they then proceed to build some sort of monster? There seems to be possibly some mysterious force that made the plane crash on the island, and perhaps it’s the same for their boat - if that’s the case, there has to be something else there to begin with, and that something is likely the source of the TCM - not the ship wrecked scientists.

Of course, then again, maybe the scientists were setting out to an island to work on their secret TCM project…

She did say there was a terrible storm…

Yes, the TCM was Prototype #1 one and escaped the hold of the ship when they ran aground. Alex the Werewolf was created by Dr. Moreau – oops! I mean Rousseau – later. I think there is a TCM and Alex, but Alex maybe eats brains.

Yeah, my first reaction was that the wind in that particular spot creates a murmur that sounds like whispering, which is just the right kind of noise to bug the snot out of someone who is delusional… or sick.

Oh and it was definitely the elephant that knocked out Sayid. No question.

Really farfetched question:
When Sayid was knocked out, we saw that in extreme close-up right? Was it so close-up that it could have been Sayid knocking himself out? I know, I know. That utterly ridiculous! Preposterous! But I was still sort of wondering how much we saw in that shot. I thought it was too close too see anything but a bit of wood. I just want to make sure I haven’t scratched Sayid off my list off possible infected delusional brain-eaters prematurely. (Besides, we know he’s got the stones to shoot himself in the leg…)

So, let me see if I’ve got this straight.

Sayid knocked himself out to avoid a brain eating elephant named Alex who is the child of a french scientist marooned 16 years ago along with her tree crushing monster prototype. And now they’re all trapped along with the invisible wispering werewolves.

That about cover it?
