Dang. My boyfriend came by last night and he kept talking during the show. I only managed keep restrained by reminding myself that if I went to jail for murder I’d probably miss future episodes of Lost. At least I have it on tape and will be rewatching it soon.
I hate coming late to the discussion, all the good spec is taken … and even some of the really bad spec.
I was quite annoyed that Sayid didn’t stick around long enough to ask some other questions like, “why are there polar bears on the island, did her group bring them or were they already there?”, “are there other bears?” (remember Danielle said something like “if we’re lucky it’s one of the bears” -she did not specify polar, grizzley or teddy), “what sort of research was her group doing?”. “am I going to have any side effects from the sedative you gave me that probably expired over 10 years ago?”, “what the hell is the big roaring tree-crushing thing?” … and so forth. I can see him wanting to get back to the gang but what is he going to tell them? He really doesn’t have many answers.
Does anyone know who Hive Guy was? The guy looked very familiar but I can’t recall what else I’ve seen him in - I guess I should check out IMDB.
I’m just chiming in to comment on the shaky camera. It’s never bothered me, but I know it bugs the crap out of one of the posters in these threads.
During the scene when Sayid was telling Nadia to run away, the camera shaking was extremely distracting. I finally understood the gripe, and I concur. A little shaking is okay, but I almost needed some Dramamine after that scene.
As a “no alcohol for 1000 miles” antiseptic measure perhaps? But…all that gear and the French folks couldn’t rig up a cheap and dirty way to ferment stuff and make island wine?
When Sayid first saw Danielle face to face, he said something like “You?” as if he knew her. What was that about, outside of him maybe “knowing” her voice from the iterations?
Thanks. I had actually found that on my own though. It didn’t really help me place where I had seen him before, maybe it was that X-Files episode he was in.
Also, I guess we can call him Sullivan instead of “Hive Guy”.
BTW, as has been mentioned, those who don’t want to be spoiled shouldn’t check out Lost on IMDB either. I noticed something in the Guest cast list which led me to a suspicion about one of the characters and further checking on a fan site with promo pics for future episodes seems to confirm my suspicion. I won’t spoiler it though, since those who like to be spoiled can probably figure it out for themselves.
I don’t know all that much of philosophy, but from what I gather from the posts of Larry Mudd at least two last names of islanders (Rousseau and Locke) are names of philosophers whose ideas seem to be, at least, obliquely relevant to their roles and to the story.
I really think he has something there.
It occurs to me that these are about the only last names we know.
Someone has used in this thread the name “Hurley Hobbes”–was this a joke or an assumption, or something I missed?
Do we know any other last names?
Are any of them names from philosophy?
My inquiring mind needs to know!
p.s. The elephant was my fault. There was no elephant. I thought I saw an elephants trunk, but I was wrong. RikWriter kindly pointed out my mistake, and upon review I saw that there was no elephant and I made a post to say so. I really wish people would stop mentioning the elephant. I de-lurked specifically because no-one else had mentioned the elephant that I thought I saw and that I thought it necessary to point out. I am now very embarassed about the whole elephant episode. I am, in fact, on the verge of re-lurking just because of the goddamned elephant. (The elephant that didn’t exist, that is.) Please ignore the big, fat elephant that isn’t there. No, not that non-existant elephant–that one over there. Thank you.
p.p.s. I still think it would have been cooler if there was an elephant. So, there.
I looked on the IMDB and the only regular character who has a last name listed is John Locke. Of the credited guests, there is Danielle Rousseau, and in a couple of future episodes, a “Richard Malkin” and a “Dr. Shepherd,” neither of which sounds meaningful to me. Everyone else is first name only.
Aww, don’t go back into hiding over the non-elephant. You’re not the first person to see an elephant that wasn’t there. Stay. Become one of us.
One of us.
Don’t worry Larry, when 24 comes back, we’ll enforce the proper “Anything not in this week’s episode is a spoiler and thus tagged as such” rule. But since I was a late comer to Lost threads, I’ll just try to remember to squint my eyes real faast if someone decides to mention nexts week’s spoiler
In the flashback when he was holding a prisoner’s file, he also had really long nails. In the falshback you could also see they were polished and possibly hardened. My first thought was “oh, Sayid Actor plays an instrument!” (E.g. Classical guitar.)
I only noticed it on his right hand. Dunno about the left.
Gee, I was kinda partial to “Mr. Itchy”.
Or is that the elephant’s name? No, wait. That would be “Stampy”.
That’s why we’ll eventually see him shave Hurley’s head for the wool.
Walt and Wish Fulfilment:
I’m speculating that Walt, being the youngest and smallest who really wants to do grown-up stuff, is going to do some kind of heroic thing. Like he’ll use the skills Locke teaches him to kill a boar on his own (while placing himself in jeopardy and worrying everyone).
Or heck, he’ll bring down the TCM! Blindfolded, with one arm tied behind his back, while throwing the knife with his foot!
