So there are still no inhalers for Shannon. She will certainly have another asthma attack in the future. Will Jin’s concoction be enough to help her when it happens again? I don’t know much about asthma or eucalyptus, so I’m just wondering.
Will the actor who plays Hurley actually have to lose weight progressive over the course of the season? That would be a cool note of realism, not to mention good for the actor’s health.
Yeah, this struck me as misdirection also, his line interrupted Jack’s line of caution and was, “I will do what I need to do to find the man responsible.” I think it may be beacon-woman also, though I had wondered, if beacon-woman wasn’t already someone they knew, posing as a castaway. From the previews for next week, it’s difficult to tell, but looks like someone new to the mix, so there went that theory.
I’ve been watching this show and reading these threads like a mental patient, but I think this is the first time I’ve posted to one.
Couple points: I frame-advanced the end of the preview for next week, to see how much of the face they showed. It was clearly a woman, in that you see a boob (not naked, obviously) and a stubble-free chin. To me, the body looked remarkably similar to Kate’s, but I know it’s not Kate; first off she had a different color shirt on, and second, all tv chicks have the same body anyway.
I guess I’m the only one who hated the peanut butter scene. I made me throw up in my mouth a little. Seriously, I had to fast forward through it the moment I realized he was going to play pretend. The torture scene, however, was perfect. I was pleased to see Jack allow so much torturing to take place. I would have bet anything he would have wussed out and told Sayyid to stop almost immediately, but he let it go pretty far. Very nice touch, that. Jack has some real darkness to him.
Unless I’m way off about tv production schedules, there is no way in hell the writers are getting ideas from these threads. Aren’t the first 13 episodes already shot? Perhaps there could be a six week delay, though, so maybe Confidence Man was being shot when the first episode aired, which would explain the lengthy delay before mapping the island perimeter. Yeah, I like that idea. They read the SDMB complaints, and immediately put in the island mapping concept, but they were already shooting Confidence Man so this is the episode they addressed that oversight.
My favorite interpretation, and the one I’ve been assuming while watching, is that this is purgatory, Jack is leading people to heaven, Sawyer is leading people to hell, and Hurley is god. That would be neat. However, this episode put the kai-bash on that theory pretty effectively, don’tcha think?
Doh! The whole reason I posted was to respond to this, and I forgot. Oh well.
The TV Guide article on this show a few weeks back addressed this. It is a logistical nightmare to have a big fat guy slim down like Richard from Survivor when he’s an actual actor playing a role. The producers response to the question of whether or not he will lose weight was something along the lines of:
“No, it’s too much to ask of an actor to lose a ton of weight during the shooting schedule. But it won’t be a problem because for one, each episode only advances time by a day or two. But in addition to that, expect the survivors to find a whole lotta food.”
And they seem to be doing just that, what with Locke and his boars.
Aside from what Ellis Dee said, that in television terms something like this would be pretty complicated and difficult to orchestrate (which is true), we don’t really know the actor is actually this big. Consider that Meat Loaf isn’t exactly a small man, and yet they put him in a fat suit in Fight Club to make him bigger. It wouldn’t be hard to take a few inches off an actor just by starting him with padding, and taking it down over time, eventually getting down to his “real” body. I’m not saying this is what they’re doing; I’m just saying this is a way it could be done.

Hi, sorry I’m late to the party. The husband and I have been putting the DVR through its paces, catching up on the whole dang series in just a few days. Gotta say, I love the show.
Anyway, may I make a prediction? Sooner or later, the tables will be turned, and Sawyer will not simply watch Jack die. This will be the moment where we see signs of Sawyer’s Redemption.
Meatloaf was actually cast because they were looking for a fat guy. When he showed up, he had slimmed down a bunch for a role he just finished. (Blacktop?) They gave him a read anyway, and he nailed it, so they kept him. They needed the fat suit, and lifts as well, as he’s far shorter than Edward Norton IRL.
The fat suit was very demanding. In the scene where everybody is leaving the fight club basement at the bar, you can see Meat taking oxygen in the background, and this was because he actually needed it. Well, you could see it if Fincher hadn’t underlit the entire friggin’ movie so badly. (My favorite part of the commentary was Pitt and Norton busting on Fincher for everything being so dark.)
Ahem. I’m a bit late to the party, having just watched the show tonight (11/11).
According to something I read somewhere online, Rose does reappear. The actress who plays her is slated to appear in several (3? don’t remember for sure) episodes. I’m sorry that isn’t very specific; I’ve just spent several minutes trying to find where I read it, but to no avail.
Sawyer reminds me strongly of someone, and it finally hit me tonight *who. *
I think he’s Don Johnson’s illegitimate son from his (Johnson’s) Miami Vice days. He’s got the hair, the stubble, the irrisistable dimples, the devil-may-care grin, and tonight he even had the politically incorrect cigarette hanging out of his mouth. My SO says he looks nothing like DJ. So…am I crazy, or is there really a resemblance? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
Okay, we have a lot of unnecessary spoiler boxes in these threads, but that is the kind of thing that *needs * to be in a box. Please be more considerate in the future, shadowfax33.
Given that Rose isn’t “missing, presumed dead”, why is it a spoiler to confirm that, yes, she will show up again? She is one of the survivors, after all. Would it likewise be a spoiler to learn that we’ll probably see more of Scott and/or Steve?
I don’t think Locke clocked Sayid. He’s smart enough to figure out that being rescued and leaving the island are two entirely separate things. He could just stay there, name it Locke’s Island and found an amusement park.
Unless something new happened in the last week (last time this question was answered), it got picked up for the rest of season one. They filmed 13 episodes and needed a green light to film the rest of the season - that’s what they got, not a renewal for another season.
That was a sarcastic joke, not meant to convey they had backstory. He got tacked by an attractive woman who was demanding something of him (or whatever, I forget the exact scene) and made a comment about it.
Yes, either Locke has an agenda or it’s an excuse for really bad writing. If Locke has no agenda, and he was just an agent for the plot to steer Sayid into attacking Sawyer… well it was pretty implausible. Given the events that happened, why the hell would the natural assumption be that sawyer concocted a delayed fuse, ran over, and whacked the guy for no apparent reason? No, Locke has to be manipulating Sayid for some reason, or it’s just a bizarre plot hole.
Seemed to me that she was enjoying it, and only reluctantly pulled away.
I would assume it’s because Jin doesn’t like to let her go do her own thing on her own… for plot reasons, it also increases the tension between Jin and Sun.
It’s at least somewhat plausible that she could’ve found a small amount of the plant, mimed the heavy breathing, rubbed it on her neck and then stopped breathing heavily. Eventually you’d get the message… not that she had to, but it’s not totally implausible from Jin’s perspective if she just tells him that’s what she did.
Speculation about Hurley:
I don’t think we’re going to see Hurley’s back story. He doesn’t appear in any of the plane or airport flashbacks. Has no one who knows him on the island. I think he’s going to turn out to be some sort of observer or something… not from the plane.
He’d planned to take a survivalist trip across Australia, despite being crippled. He made reference to a double amputee that climbed Mt. Everest. So he learned all he would need to know about survival before he flew to Australia.
You give 90% of women a choice between a nice, respectable guy like Jack and an asshole like Sawyer…
I’m not bitter or anything.
The sawyer background was the island sawyer’s background, definitely. If it wasn’t, why would there be a scene with the loan shark at the pool hall? The kid sawyer wouldn’t have known about that and hence it wouldn’t have been in any of his imaginings. In any case, he made it clear at the end that he had became just like the real sawyer.
Locke saw whatever it was that was on the island and he said rather mysteriously that it was beautiful (IIRC).
He knows something about the island that the others don’t. Maybe this knowledge is related to him seemingly trying to manipulate people in the group to do certain things… or maybe the island (?) has some sort of control over him and his actions.
Just chiming it to say that I believe the flashback was definitely “Island” Sawyer’s story, not “Real” Sawyer’s, for the same reasons already mentioned. Also, SenorBeef, speculation (according to Juniper’s guidelines, which I hope we can all agree upon eventually) based on episodes already seen doesn’t need to be in a spoiler box.
Darwin’s Finch, things that come from spoiler sites should probably be in spoiler tags here. Maybe it’s not that big of a deal now, but what if the writers want to trip us up next week and make us think Rose is dead? Now we all know she’s not.
I really wish people would read the guidelines Juniper has already posted (they make a heap of sense, IMO) and either agree with them or not. As long as we do that, and as long as the OP (whoever that happens to be) remembers to put “SPOILERS” in the thread title, I think these Lost threads can continue smoothly.
To reiterate, stuff from spoiler sites, TV guide, Tarot readings, Ms. Cleo, your dreams; anything that spoils a future episode needs to be hidden here. We don’t all pay attention to those things because not all of us want to know what happens in the season finale before we get there. Details and speculation from episodes that have already aired, including the previews for the following week, do not need to be spoiled. If you’re reading this thread, chances are you’ve already seen it and there’s nothing left to spoil. If you haven’t already seen it, why are you reading this thread? (Provided the OP remembers to put “SPOILERS” in the title.) Openly posting that the French woman is played by so and so, or that Rose will be seen in so many more episodes is just bad form.
The flight was going from Sydney to Singapore. Watch Sayid’s bit with the burning stick in the pilot episode.
Jin and Sun would then fly to Korea, Charlie back to England, most of the others back to the US.
Everybody clear on that?
I thought the Sawyer twist was going to be that the letter was from another kid, and that even after doing that to a family he’d gone on to do it again, but couldn’t go through with it at the last minute. Boy was I pissed that they made him nice.
Also, Jack’s tattoos…we don’t know what they’re about.
