Lost 2.1: "Man of Science, Man of Faith"

I don’t know whether this relates at all to comic books, but I’ve read that the “Felicity” folks have had to delay their DVD releases because of haggles over the music rights. “Felicity,” which I’ve never seen, apparently used a lot of current music as mood setters, the same way that “Buffy” did. I never knew this, but just because they paid for, and used, music for an episode which aired on t.v., doesn’t mean they have permission to use it on the DVD release.

The producers are considering substituting other music for the next “Felicity” season DVD because they couldn’t agree on a fair price with the musicians.

So maybe they decided to blur the comic book because they didn’t want a legal mess when it came time for the DVD release.

I didn’t see anybody else mention this, so for those of you wondering why Desmond would have just turned the lights on when Locke banged on the hatch, and didn’t do anything: Hello! Ladder’s gone! What’s he going to do? Stand at the bottom and wave is about it…

Split the difference? He moved here when he was two, and stopped speaking Korean at all sometime in junior high. He claims his comprehension never faded, but his speaking did. cite.

Agree this is more likely a leaked plot point than something real. There’s also the coincidence that the supposed book was published 16 years ago, the same amount of time since CFL has been on the island. Maybe Marseille Rousseau is supposed to be related to CFL somehow? Her husband’s name was Robert, right? So maybe her father or brother or something.

Still, as a plot ploint, it looks more like crazy gibberish someone in the Lost world might have come up with to explain the numbers and such with perhaps a few kernels of truth.

That’s pretty much exactly what I said, so I’m not sure what difference you want to split. Maybe we should start a GD thread and hash it out.

So is it “No, button’s bad” or “No button’s bad”? Big, big difference does a tiny comma make.

Or, could it have been:"‘No’ button’s bad"?

Or possibly “No butt on S. Bad,” showing that Walt, who likes comics, does not like the way the Homestar Runner character is drawn??

Sorry.

Or perhaps:

“No Bud in Islamabad”, making a timely reference to American soldiers respecting Islamic culture by not drinking beer when in the Mid-East.

I was thinking that too.

Desmond hits it right after he gets up, then he does his dishes, eats, does his exercises and then you get the explosion.

It’s possible that the time of his pushing the button coincided with the time Locke was attacked by the black smoke.

By the way, did anyone watch Invasion? In it, a guy is grabed by a shaft of light. Kind of opposite of Lost.

not sure what this chart represents or where it came from, but saw it posted on another mb:

The chart represents how the trigrams of the I Ching are paired to form the 64 hexagrams.

If you want to look up the hexagrams and their interpretations go here.

Curious thought no one seems to have explored yet:

When we first see Desmond start his morning routine, the underground complex seems to be in quite good repair. At the end of the episode, when Jack is exploring, it looks quite rundown.

I commented to my wife when we were watching it that maybe Desmond was imagining the good qualities, and in reality the complex IS rundown. Perhaps he has been down there awhile. He looked a bit “off” mentally when confronting Jack and holding Locke at gunpoint, which would make sense if he has been down there awhile and hiding from the island baddies, whether they be the Others or the smoke/nano thingie.

So now Desmond has gone quite batty and imagines the area below the hatch to be nicer than it is. Hearing Mama Cass every day for 16 years (a guess that might fit) would drive ne insane too.

Dammit!

Desmond can’t have been down there for 16 years because he met Jack fewer than 16 years ago when Sarah was in the hospital unless Jack has made a pact with Satan where he doesn’t age.

I don’t think “Make Your Own Kind of Music” appears on any LPs as the first song though. I believe it was released as a single (that’s how the version I bought on iTunes is listed) and then it appeared on some compilations.

I think though that the beginning of the show it was his living quarters and regular lighting. The later segment seems to show more of the tunnels and the computers- all with low lighting so I don’t think it’s a case of him imaging he’s living in a mansion when really it’s a hut.

I’m pretty sure it was all artificial light, although designed to mimic daylight.

Yeah, that’s what I figured, too. The living quarters are nicer, the work area (computer room) kind of old and dusty, and the tunnels leading to it have all those drippy pipes. I believe at the beginning, when the Hatch Dweller pressed the button on the computer, the button appeared kind of old, and maybe covered with caked-on dust or something.

Of course it’s artificial lighting, it’s about 1.30 a.m.
Now why Desmond would want to have his mornings occur at this time of night, I dunno. My WAG is that the writers thought it was a cool introduction to the character to show his morning routine.
I noticed when I went through the sequence, frame by frame, that the mirror at the bottom of the shaft, under the hatch, doesn’t seem to be a permanent fixture. The other mirrors can be manipulated, leading me to think that the surveilence system is designed so that different mirrors show different places of this (huge?) underground facility. The mirror under the hatch is propped up in a corner, leading me to think that Desmond discovered that the old shaft no one uses anymore was being dug out and that he needs to be able to keep an eye on what’s going on there.

Also, I think the only reason Walt appeared was to tell us that the writers haven’t forgotten about the raft people.

A nice touch was that the first frame of the new season (not the recap) was a close-up of en eye opening wide.

I’m happy so far. While we haven’t got any real answers, there was some good clues that tie in well with what we knew before.

Did they show the same areas? Did we see dome room at the beginning?

Perhaps he takes good care of his living area, but lets the rest of the area wear down.
