Lost 2.9: "What Kate Did"

Oopsie!

And on the Korea thing, yeah, my ex (who was Air Force) was sent to Korea for a year – in 1984. When our youngest child was two months old. Yeah, that made us ALL real happy. But, of course, it means that there’s no problem with Kate’s “dad” being there 26 years ago, or however old Kate is supposed to be.

Army Brat Checking in. Fist off the insignia that her dad had on his Class A uniform was that of a Sergeant Major SGM, three up three down with a star in the middle (reminds me of Robin Williams in Good Morning Vietnam “What does Three up and Three down mean to you Airman?” “The end of an Inning sir?”)

My Dad retired with 24yrs of Service as a CSM or Command Sergeant Major (Three Up Three down with a star in the middle surrounded by Clusters) He entered the service in the second to the last Draft and made a carreer out of it. By the time he was drafted we were already pulling out of Vietnam, and he retired in 1996. So Could someone still be serving today as a SGM and have Served during Vietnam, Not likely. As an enlisted solider I don’t think you can go beyond 30, unless you are the SMA or Sergeant Major of the Army. And Given that the Producers have tried to not date the show as in This Flashback happen in the spring of 92 and the plane crashed in the summer of 03 so it is possible he served in Vietnam but with a current Timeline, ie. the plane crashed in 04 when the series premiered it is unlikely.

On the Korea Front, I think that he was stationed over there unaccompanied. I have lived through this before. My dad was given orders to transfer to Germany, He had two options, move the whole family, or go unaccompanied, he chose to go unaccompained as My sister and I had Just started High School / Junior High, and did not want to uproot us. That meant 2 years unaacompained assignment that ended up being 1 1/2 because his unit was deactivated. Korea is 1 year rotation becasue it is considered a hardship posting.

Perhaps this will finally convince Cynthia Watros to do that Cinemax Women In Prison movie I’ve been fantasizing about ever since the first episode of Titus…

-Joe, evil lesbian warden

I’m really regretting my Korea timeline thoughts… clearly I was way off base with how I understood Kate w/regaurd to his service there, and the ensuing timeline conundrum it created.

Skipper… Seargeant Major… is that highest non-commisioned or close? How many years in service does it ‘generally’ represent?

Also, my comment about “that’s one dumb seargent” was meant tounge in cheek, and was not meant as a slam… I’d expect after 30+ years (original thoughts on the timeline… after all, 3 wars, panama and grenada in that timeframe!) would be a higher grade that… and/or fully retired.

Highest Ranking NCO is SMA (Sergeant Major of the Army) Technically a E-9 with a different pay rate link

A SGM is an E-9 and according to the chart I linked the pay rate starts at after 10 years although it is unlikely someone would make E-9 at 10 years, seems to me my dad made CSM also an E-9 rate in 91 or at about 18 - 19 yrs of Service. I don’t think he was an SGM for very long between CSM and 1SG (E-8) you can see the insignia and order here

no offense taken, he (kate’s dad) was after all in Recruiting command so one can’t say he was the brightest bulb in the socket.

Since this is neither the Pit nor Great Debates, let me just say that I strongly disagree with this statement.

Man, they look wasted.

To be fair, Watros looks more like she had a severe crying jag before the photo.
MIchelle looks loopy-eyed drunk.

I’d, as they say, hit that.

OK, I had no idea this episode “ran long” so my VCR cut off just after Locke and Mr Echo spliced together the film.

What happened?

And did we get a preview?

Tsk. Tsk. Heads up at post #5 here.

Here’s a transcript of the episode, as a catch-up.

In a nutshell, Sawyer wakes up and naturally figures they’ve been rescued, being in the hatch and all. Kate guides him outside and he’s disappointed – but then he sees the same horse from (possibly) the marshall incident and the earlier island sighting, reassuring Kate that she wasn’t hallucinating.

Lock and Eko watch the film and discover that the lost bit contained a dire warning not to attempt to use the computer as a communications device, as it could precipitate another “incident.” Immediately cut to Michael, sitting at the terminal. “Hello?” types out on the screen, and Michael responds:
Hello?

:>Hello?

Who is this?

:>This is Michael. Who is this?

Dad?

:>_
Roll credits.

Yeah, like I read the Lost threads before I watch the episode.

I don’t WANT to be spoiled.

I don’t even want to be TEMPTED to be spoiled.

Larry Mudd, do you realize that the green text in your spoiler is 100% visible through the spoiler box?

I think that was Larry’s intention - it looks just like the computer screen on the show.

That was mainly a kid, but I think the thing to do is read it until the eppy goes to air. I avert my eyes once it starts up on the East coast and folks start posting spoilers.

Oops. Oh well, general dumbassery seems to be my modus operandi today.

Looked nice, Larry Mudd!

I wanted to respond to someone’s comment about Locke knowing how to splice film but now I can’t find that post. Anyway, I know how to splice film and I am certainly not a jack of all trades, like Locke. Nor do I have detailed training in film-making, I took a film-making class in high school and we learned how to splice film. It was a long time ago but I think I could remember how to do it if I had to. Perhaps, Locke did something similar or was in A-V club in High School.
Re: The Lost Girls DUI’s. Did you see how Michelle Rodriguez has had previous run ins with the law? Is anyone surprised? No, I didn’t think so. “I don’t just play a tough Latina chick, I am one!”

Heck, I learned how to splice videotape working at Blockbuster. No training at all, just a pissed off customer, a pair of scissors and some scotch tape. There’s a blip and a warp, and then it’s fine. I found out later there’s all sorts of fancy equipment for it, but scissors and scotch tape work well enough for me.

Yes, but the footage that Locke was splicing wasn’t video tape, it was film. While it’s not something a 5th grader couldn’t do, you do have to make sure the sprocket holes line up, and… wait… am I being wooshed?

No you’re not being whooshed (I thought the word had two h’s). Locke would have had to have gone through the larger reel discovered where the missing part was, take out the tape that was holding that part together and then get the new part to fit in.

What sort of editing equipment did he have besides a table and maybe a razor blade? And why go to all the trouble of editing the film and separating the parts?
