Lost 2.9: "What Kate Did"

Nice. I love Doper Lost threads!

So we now have two castaways showing up on TV in the background.

A few thoughts:

  • I think this episode had some of the types of conversations we want them to be having. Charlie mentions the Polar bears and monsters. Sawyer is shocked by waking up in the hatch, and Sayid acknowledges seeing Waaaaltt! I need that type of dialogue every now and then.

  • Kate really needs to get pushed to the background. She is a spotty character. I think you break her out when you need some super heroics and leave it at that. I was terribly disappointed with “What Kate Did.” What a tv cliche (although we add to our “daddy” issues). I was hoping she was a malcontent. The only reason the Marshall hated her was because he almost hit a horse and probably got embarrassed for losing a collar.

  • Speaking of the Marshall, was the car he wrecked “THE CAR”?

  • Good to see Sawyer back in fine form. Lost just isn’t Lost without a Hurley funny and Sawyer sarcastic line. Both accomplished this week. “If you’re talking about the big, damn horse in the jungle, then yeah!” CLASSIC! If they ever remake the original Star Wars Trilogy, I call Josh Holloway for Han Solo. He’s that good.

*Did Jack know of Hurley’s stay at the Looney Bin? Did he tell him in last Hurley-centric episode? Jack didn’t seem surprised.

  • Speaking of Hurley, you’d think someone would recognize him as a lottery winner. Most megamillions winners get on TV (as he did in the first Hurley flashback episode). But it would seem that he’d be more memorable as his grandfather died on camera. Can you IMAGINE how much CNN would play that footage? Plus, you think some journalist would stumble on to the fact that he was in a looney bin. LOONEY BIN ALUM WINS LOTTERY AND WITNESSES GRANDFATHER HAVE A HEART ATTACK seems like a story that would make the news a lot. Couple it with the fact that Hurley is a peculiar looking guy, it seems someone would recognize him.

  • Interesting choice to station Kate’s dad in Korea. Not only was it a place that a peace time American would be stationed for a long period of time without bringing a spouse, but also makes me wonder if there is a connection to Jin/Sun. If all the castaways turn out to have a connection, there is a possible connection from Kate to Jin/Sun. Likely not even a red herring, but it is in the back of my mind.

  • When Mysterko started in about the Temple, did anyone start worrying about Grimbaldi-esque nonsense?

  • Now that Eko is on board, Locke is starting to seem more sane. I love the moments where they show that Locke isn’t some raving lunatic. He’s just a darn good character. But now that Mr. Eko is showing that he’s gone more native than Locke, I look for Locke to step up his A-Game. BRING OUT THE WEIRD!

  • Anyone notice that when Locke began to frantically enter the numbers that the clock hit 23?

John Mace, I don’t recall there being a computer prompt in front of any of the incoming messages.

Dante, I’m working on the crossword. Does anybody know if there’s a screencap available of the clue section? The best I’ve got from what should fit without clues so far is SPRI _ _ _ _ E, with, naturally, the possibility that I’m totally wrong.

Who is that person on the TV?

It looks like Sayid to me.

I think there should be a C in the second to last (blank) space. It would make the word ACIDS.

Also, because the 23 appears in the numbers and Eko quotes the 23rd Psalm, I give you text to the:

4th Psalm

8th Psalm

15th Psalm

16th Psalm

23rd Psalm

42nd Psalm

If people are willing to read obscure books for clues, I imagine the psalms that correspond to the numbers will intrigue SOMEONE.

I see this as a great test of your devotion to Lost if you analyze each Psalm to see if it reveals anything about the story.

I am not at that level of devotion.

Psalm 4 - I will both lie down in peace, and sleep;
For You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety

The hatch and caves

Psalm 8 - Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants
You have ordained strength

Walt and Aaron.

Psalm 15 - *LORD, who may abide in Your tabernacle?
Who may dwell in Your holy hill?

2 He who walks uprightly,
And works righteousness,
And speaks the truth in his heart;
3 He who does not backbite with his tongue,
Nor does evil to his neighbor,
Nor does he take up a reproach against his friend;
4 In whose eyes a vile person is despised,
But he honors those who fear the LORD;
He who swears to his own hurt and does not change;
5 He who does not put out his money at usury,
Nor does he take a bribe against the innocent.

     He who does these things shall never be moved*

Everybody on the whole freaking island!

Psalm 16 - The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places;
Yes, I have a good inheritance

Hurley, and Locke the opposite

Psalm 23 - *The LORD is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
3 He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell[a] in the house of the LORD
Forever.*

The whole reason the castaways are there.

Psalm 42 - When I remember these things,
I pour out my soul within me.
For I used to go with the multitude;
I went with them to the house of God,
With the voice of joy and praise,
With a multitude that kept a pilgrim feast

The food in the hatch.

See? That wasn’t so hard! :smiley:

This screencap is of the clue section, but I didn’t find it helpful. I think middleman is right about the letter C. The first letter could also be an O. O’Hare is a popular crossword answer.

How many wars have started because the Bible is so easily interpreted!?

:smiley:

IIRC, there was a shot of Locke reading the crossword prompt, and a shot of the clue section which definitely said “Ekindu’s friend.”

I grant you that it’s odd the other answers don’t fit, but it’s possible it’s meaningless inaccurate filler and that the producers/propmaster slipped on this detail since the other parts of the puzzle aren’t germaine to the plot orhinting at relationships.

OR… maybe Locke was completing a puzzle started by Desmond, who happened to be a shitty cruciverbalist.

Oh, and did anyone notice what number the Enkidu clue was?

Okay, I’m a big dork. Possibilities I’ve thought of:

O or S (O’Hare, which Dante is right about, or Share)
P (Spend is the only word I could come up with here)
R (Acorn)
I (Imitative)
B, C, D, G, M, N, O, P, S, T, W, X, or Y (Yeah, stupid short words.)
?
?
C (Acids, as kindly pointed out by middleman)
E (Pager)

I’d agree with you, except that if you look at the screencap for the clues and then the screencap of the grid, 36D, 37D and 38D are all the correct answers to the clues given.

Hurley told Jack about his stay in the first episode this season.

Actually, the correct answer is “Gilgamech”, Enkidu’s giant robotic buddy.

Does he crush trees,perhaps?

[sub] I’ve gone off the deep end…[/sub]

Also, in the interaction between Jack and Hurley, when Jack asked if Hurley was the island’s shrink now, I thought (a) yes, he is, actually, and (b) yes, it is totally transference. So, nyah.

And the jigsaw puzzle: SPRITE ICE. It’s an ad for Enkidu’s favorite soft drink.

Not me; caught me totally by surprise. I thought it was the coolest cliffhanger ending ever.

You guys are starting to get cynical…

I didn’t realize it would probably be Walt until Michael was typing “This is Michael. Who is this?” But after he responded “Dad?”, I half-wondered if Michael was going to type “WAAAAAAAAAALT!” :slight_smile:

This site should do it. Lots of interesting stuff!!

Note that he also claims the Dharma logo is NOT on the plane.

I kind of took “perfect” in this scene not so much as “always capable in everything he does” but rather to mean “always noble and good etc etc”. Less about ability to do things, not making mistakes, and so forth (as Kate has plenty of skills herself), but more about doing the right thing. I think maybe she doesn’t always feel worthy around Jack – not unskilled or uncapable, just undeserving of him or something.

Well, Jack was the guy who got to make out with Kate this episode, and I didn’t see Sawyer getting any real action this time. :wink:
