Lost 3.17: "Catch-22"

‘Sacked’, to me, sounds a bit old fashioned. I’d always used ‘fired’ instead.

Oh, and Desmond’s definately Scottish. We’ve seen him drunk more often than the rest. And you wouldn’t (have been, the regt no long exists) really be a Jock (as opposed to an Officer) in the Scot’s Guards if you weren’t Scottish, as far as I’ve seen.

Nothing finer than a smokin’ hot drunk monk with a Scottish accent. I would spend my last cent to find him too.

I’m still trying to figure out how a helicopter passenger/pilot was able to parachute foward, what, a couple of miles from where the coptor went down…

As far as I could tell, Desmond never saw Penny in the flashback(s) - or atleast we didn’t - so we don’t know that Penny was supposed to land or not, someone that eventually gets him back to Penny I could see.

Seemed like a hella big assumption on Desmond’s part that she would be Penny. Even more so, that she would have anything to DO with him, unless his flashes were showing the picture in the book - and I don’t think it was shown.

There was no reason for him to think it would be her, or that it would be related to him in any way at all.

That doesn’t seem so strange to me, since the 'copter was still airborne when she bailed out. As long as it wasn’t falling straight down it would eat up a few more miles before hitting the water.

Merijeek:

That’s the answer - he kept seeing the picture in his flash-forwards, and who would have a copy other than Penny (or so he thought)?

and worked in the lush vineyards of the Scottish Glens

We didn’t actually see the vineyards. For all we know, they were buying bottles of Chateau Thames Embankment, putting on their own labels, crating them up and selling them to daughters of wealthy businessmen at 100 quid a bottle.

Yes, the helicopter would move forward, but why would the parachutist move so much farther forward. That’s what’s puzzling.

According to the label on the wine bottles, yes (sort of): http://lost.cubit.net/viewEgg.php?id=274

Doesn’t seem puzzling to me. The parachutist would drift with the wind. The helicopter would not.

Right. And the parachutist could even navigate a little bit, if it’s the right kind of parachute. It’s like hang-gliding.

Also, apart from hiding the woman’s face, there really wasn’t any reason for the parchutist to wear that complicated helmet and oxygen supply thingie. Choppers don’t fly that high. That’s gear for those jumping out at 30k ft.

Of course, there’s the (slight) possibility that she didn’t come from the chopper.

Excellent point. We need to keep reminding ourselves that the producers of this show are stage illusionists. “Look over there! Because what’s really going on is over here!”

Charlie Tan:

Unless she knew the island was (falsely, as far as we know) under quarantine. That’s a good reason to have one’s own air supply. It’s clear that Penny Widmore knows something about the island (since she had been notified of the electromagnetic discharge), probably from Dharma sources.

Well, a very bad hang glider decides to head for the trees and the hills instead of that soft sandy beach where the fire is…

Assuming she’s from the copter, evertyhing about the setup was only for the “save charlie or not” decision of Desmond’s.

Assuming she’s from something other than the copter, well, while I might go for it, nothing from the episode suggests it. (except the obvious issues with the scenes themselves).

Weren’t Nicki & Paulo conmen? Weren’t they conning that old guy she was sleeping with? Then wasn’t Nicki conning Paulo into believing she cared for him in order to get the diamonds back and then Paulo was conning her into believing he didn’t have them so she would stay with him.

I think randwill is right, this show is mostly about being conned. Sure there are lots of mysteries, but at the root of all the action that is taking place is Ben conning everyone. I still like the show but I am a bit tired of all the deception. I couldn’t watch Alias for too long because nothing was ever what it seemed. All the twists get tedious after awhile. Becomes too soap operish.

If you want to use the 6th or 7th definition of con you can twist it to mean any kind of dishonesty. To use the very specific term con men, not even close. A con man, or confidence man is someone who runs a confidence scheme on someone. Someone who often uses the victims own greed to defraud them out of their money. Sawyer is a conman. Nikki and Paulo are murderers and thieves. All of them are criminals but not the same type of criminal. It’s like saying a bank robber, an embezzler and a blackmailer are all con men.

She didn’t. The Helicopter flew over the island, and stalled. The pilot bailed out. The helicopter carried on for a way, and crashed out to sea.
