I thought this episode was another snoozer. As far as plot development goes it comes down to - girl parachutes onto island. It took 40-some minutes for just that.
The ‘Charlie almost dying again’ was a waste of time. The ‘Desmond briefly was a Monk’ meant nothing. I don’t care how he met Penelope. And the Kate/Sawyer and Jack/Juliette subplot doesn’t interest me in the least but I realize this kind of stuff is popular on “Desparate Housewives” and “Grey’s Anatomy” so ABC probably insists on it.
So maybe, despite my having invested so many hours in it, I’m starting to realize that “Lost” just isn’t the show I thought it was going to be. So yeah, I know, I’m not allowed to criticize a show for not being what I want it to be.
So here’s my pitch. A new show. Let’s call it “The Missing”. A airplane crash lands near a mysterious island stranding a diverse group of survivors there. Over time the people discover fascinating and strange things about the island, including the fact that they may not be alone. Over the weeks new mystery are presented. These mysteries have meanings to the individuals and through the investigations and resolutions of these mysteries the characters change and grow. Each mystery is satisfyingly solved within a two week or three week-long story arc, but each resolved mystery leads to a further fascinating discovery and more questions. And so on.
But here’s the best part, all the parts are played by MONKEYS!
I think that Desmond very much a Yossarian-type character. Much is made of Desmond being a coward, but like Yossarian he is often the only person who can see clearly and understands his predicament. He knows he is a coward (everyone tells him) but at the same time, his cowardice saves Charlie repeatedly, and seemingly saved the world (back when he could have done that). Yossarian also had several visions, including Snowden (who dies repeatedly in his mind) and the “dead man in his tent.”
I haven’t read Catch-22 in a while, so I can’t really do a serious analogy, but I believe there are many similarities between the two characters.
Listen, I don’t care if you criticize the show. I just don’t understand how someone who seemingly hates the show as much as you do continues to watch and come into threads for the fans and insult the show.
You don’t like it. Great. Move on, stop coming into the threads, and figure out something else to do with your time. No skin off anyone’s backs.
I didn’t realize these threads were for the exclusive participation of fans of the show to praise it. Are there separate threads for fans of “Lost” who have misgivings about the show?
Not necessarily praise it, but participate in conversation about each episode. Not just insults.
There’s no thread I know of for people with misgivings about the show, but feel free to start one instead of crapping on these. Calling yourself a “fan” is sort of a stretch though, don’t you think?
Maybe the only safe way to get to the island is by sub, but the beacon is necessary to navigate to the island underwater. There is a alternate way to get to the island by air but your plane or helicopter is going to crash so you better plan to parachute.
I’ve never missed an episode. But “ex-fan” will be a better description of me if the writers don’t start delivering, on promises made two and a half years ago, with a little more alacrity. I’m not getting any younger.
Yeah, but as soon as one monkey conned another out of a banana, we’d be back to another exciting episode of Repetitive Snark Theater.
FWIW, I agree that the Desmond flashback this time was the least interesting of his flashbacks so far. But I look at it this way – we aren’t going to get a big twist revelation in every flashback. The characters would lose any believability that they currently have. I think people got spoiled in season 1, with each first flashback on a character revealing something new and exciting, sometimes with a twist at the end (John in the wheelchair, Claire’s psychic knowing about the crash, etc). So when season 2 came and many flashbacks were more “fill-in-the-details” variety, people who expected a big reveal every time got disappointed.
But there’s also the familiarity factor. You get familiar with a show’s format and ways, it’s harder to keep you excited. Just like when you start dating somebody – you’re all over them in the first few months. Then familiarity sets in, and you’ve already seen her naked, you’ve tried all the positions you can imagine, and still she’s boring you for some reason. But maybe… just maybe… it’s not 100% her fault.
<Close Up on Trion’s Eyeball. randwill’s statement has triggered a flashback>
Woooooooooooooosh
Scene: Interior. Night. College Dorm Room. A Young Trion is sitting on industrial strength furniture listening to his roommate.
Roommate: I’ve gotten really bored with the way my girlfriend gives head. There’s no passion anymore. No spark. Why do relationships always turn to crap?
Trion: Why don’t you just break up with her.
<we hear Trion’s thoughts here>
Trion’s Brain: Or at least stop bitching to me about it.
Roommate (speaking): No way, man. I’ve been a great boyfriend. Totally commited and faithful. It’s up to her to change.
<The Roommate puts on some Emo music and…>
<flashback ends>
Woooooooooooosh.
<Trion wakes up on the beach screaming.>
Trion: Aaaaaaaaaaauuuurrrrghhhh.
Sayid: My God! I’ve never heard anyone scream like that before!
