I think it’s probably just bad makeup. I thought it looked like they’d tried to make Horace look older. I think they were trying to make Richard look younger by having him have long hair. Ben had his widow’s peaks covered up, badly I might add, in order to make him look younger when he was killing his father.
Overall, I don’t know that anti-aging is a big thing on the island. They might write it into the script to account for the weirdness of having actors playing themselves on the island at different ages, but overall I think the discrepancies between the characters relative ages in this episode was nothing more than poorly executed effects.
Apparently, “Leonard Tooms” was a character that appeared on two X-Files episodes, about a decade ago.
My wife weirds me out when she does things like that. We’ll be watching something on A&E and all of a sudden… “Oh, there’s that girl from the Bounty commercial. I wondered what happened to her.”
I hope you’re right. It seems to me that killing Locke off would be a big insult to the fans. Locke’s popularity aside, he is just about the only character who’s looking for answers about the island and that makes him most like us. Being fed all this stuff about him being special and then just knocking him off before he gets any answers is kind of a big “fuck you!” to the fans.* It would serve no purpose other than to be shocking.
*Keep in mind, I am not one of those who bitches constantly about the writers/producing fucking with us. I love the show but I don’t like killing off characters for no purpose other than to be shocking. Except for Ana Lucia, that was okay.
She was the woman in the car that helped Ben’s dad in the opening and she was the schoolteacher on the island.
Tom was speculated to be gay when the Others had Kate prisoner and she didn’t want to shower with him around in case he watched and he told her not to worry because she’s not his type. Personally, I don’t think it means he’s gay, I think it may mean he just doesn’t like bony-ass women.
It seems too close a resemblance to be coincidence to me, especially since we end up seeing a few other…Others and they apparently have not aged. Looking at the screen captures from previous episodes and comparing them to “Casey” from the latest episode, the nose and mouth and eyes pretty much look the same to me…perhaps she has fuller cheeks in the new episode, or maybe it’s just that she’s smiling a bit more and simply has that appearance.
Also, I’m not sure why people are doubting that there’s some sort of anti-aging/immortality thing going on with the Natives; I thought it was pretty blatant and that everyone I’ve talked to who has seen the show immediately recognized it and commented on it. Applying Ockham’s Razor, it seems more incredible that the makeup artists would do such a consistently bad job than that the Natives were obviously being shown as not aging. If it turns out there isn’t some sort of anti-aging/immortality thing going on, I’ll eat a chili pepper.
Yeah, I agree. In fact, when somebody mentioned the Ben comment, “It’s my birthday. You remember what those are, don’t you?” (to Richard) – seems like that might be a subtle clue, as well.
I may be the only one anywhere with this opinion, but - I hope Locke is dead and stays dead. Yes, the island healed him once before, but the island does heal everyone. I can make exceptions, but generally in a story I like dead characters to stay dead.
But is he dead? He was shot and bleeding, but alive when the camera cut away from him. Mikahil certainly looked dead a few episodes ago, but apparently the sonic gate simply bloodied and stunned him. I agree that the dead should stay dead, but there should be no mistaking dead for unconscious first.
If Cooper comes back to life, f’rinstance, I’ll be ticked.
The island doesn’t heal everyone. Sawyer got an infection and nearly died, he recovered thanks to Jack’s medical skill, Kate’s attentions and the antibiotics. The Marshall, Boone, Shannon, Ana Lucia, Libby, Scott, Eko (the second time around) and probably a few more didn’t heal either. Charlie’s the only one so far who’s recovered from actually being dead and he had a little help with that.
Well, that was what made people speculate Tom was gay. I don’t necessarily agree with it. I’m glad there was actually a male on the island that wasn’t falling all over himself to be with Kate. It would cheapen my joy at that tidbit for him to actually be gay.
I had been saying that I thought a better approach to a continuing mystery adventure would be to present the audience with mysteries and then solve them in a timely manner while at the same time introducing another layer of mystery, and so on. I thought this episode was a step in this direction. We learned a good bit about Ben’s origins and the Dharma Initiative, but got new mysteries in the form of Jacob and the Hostiles. Like why are the Hostiles there and why are they so freakin’ hostile?
Since the writers are currently on vacation, I know they are reading this board, so here’s my suggestion for the next 3 seasons. A new rule; we cannot introduce a new mystery without explaining an old one. Put that on a big sign in the writers’ room. With three seasons of mythology in place, there’s plenty of stuff to work from and it’ll provide some much needed satisfaction to the fan base.
According to The Washington Post "Lost’ is averaging just under 14 million viewers. Down from it’s peak of 20 million. After the next few weeks there won’t be a new episode for 8 months. If they want those 6 million viewers, or more, back, they should concentrate on explainations and questions equally.
