Lost 3.5: The Cost of Living

The videos warned that the computers were NOT to be used to attempt to communicate with the other stations, which implies that it can be done, but you’re just not supposed to.

Thank you. So I’m not crazy, and last week they did mention that it was on the lumbar spine. So I was damn confused when he started talking about Benry’s neck. Continuity error and/or ignorance on the part of the show, or is something weird actually going on? If someone has a screencap of the X-ray, I could probably figure out where the tumor actually is…

Seems like there were two or more films visible when Jack noticed them.

To my not-so-trained eye, it looks like lumbar, not cervical, vertebrae. But can we get Qadgop or another doctory type in here for a consult?

Observation from the lostpedia.com page for The Cost of Living, “Theories” section:

From what I heard, he was proud of the killing that he was responsible for when they were boys, because his actions had saved his brother. “What happened to Yemi” makes it sound like he was proud of how his brother died, which was very much not the case.

Amen brother.
I would be like I’ll remove your tumor, give you a tripple bypass, perform a sex change operation for you…whatever…just tell me what the fuck is going on on this stupid island!

Maybe because the first time he encountered it, it was gathering information and didn’t have time to confront him?

Here’s a question–was Boone in the smoke lodge a TCM-induced hallucination or did Locke bring it on himself? And if Boone was brought on by the TCM is that what Ecko meant by “You’re next?”? It spoke to Locke and now he’s next in line for final judgment or whatever it is the Smoke does?

Can you tell me in which episode this was shown? I must have missed it because this is ringing no bells at all.

I thought it just said not to use the computers for “any other purpose.”

Definitely the lumbar spine; there is some L2 craziness. This doesn’t exclude another tumor in the cervical spine but hey. Continuity fairy is out on a bender, apparently.

I just wanted to add that I too am disappointed Eko is gone. A few notes:

  1. Bernard is the only tailie left. When Locke said that Eko’s last words were “We’re next” I took it to mean that since all the tailies were gone, now it was time to start on the main group.
  2. Cerberus was a security system to Hades. We know the TCM comes out of a hole in the ground. I’m just saying, that’s it. What’s next, a hero’s quest to capture the TCM or lull it to sleep using music or drugged cakes? Cerberus guarded Hades from the living and kept the dead inside. If/when Cerberus is disabled, will we get to see a return of our dead friends? I’m just going to make a WAG guess here but Locke’s recovery of function of his legs may indicate that he in fact could be dead or mistaken by the TCM as such. Hence when Charlie and Eko saw the TCM, it was a black cloud. When Locke saw it, it was a bright light. Or maybe Locke as Heracles?
  3. Surgical removal of a spinal tumor, especially if it a metastasis, would accomplish absolutely jack squat without chemo and radiation in the real world. In a man Ben’s age, one should assume it is a met – prostate cancer would be a good choice, especially in the L-spine – as primary bone cancer in a middle aged man is much, much rarer.
  4. Last week when Colleen converted from sinus tach into asystole and Jack started trying to save her: single most unrealistic code I’ve seen on TV. I guess partially because it has become second nature to me, but I actually yelled at the TV “The leads are disconnected you asswipe!” Nobody converts into a flat line like that, ever, unless the EKG leads fall off.
  5. This episode was slightly better for me simply because the whole episode wasn’t devoted to beating up a Lostie. Although Eko did get thrown around pretty good.

What Kate Did. Not sure of the episode number.

Just reviewed the footage from Every Man. Three films are visible (very briefly). One clearly shows the ribcage and doesn’t include the neck. Another is mostly obscured, the third (middle) (this one?) is ambiguous to my untrained eye. The shape of the vertebrae seems more consistent with lumbar, as you say. If you look at the full X-Ray shown in the recap at the beginning of Cost of Living, the X-Ray seems to show the pelvis at the bottom. Also, the vertebrae seem to big and round to be cervical. If it is lumbar, then it looks more like L2 than L4 to my untrained eye.

The part that Radzinski (sp?) chopped out mentioned an attempt to communicate, but Locke saw that and Desmond didn’t.

Did I imagine this, or was the preview for next weeks’ episode tagged with “Fall Season Finale?”

If so WTF?!? Is this the last new episode until '07?

Did Eko really say “You’re next?” It seemed like whatever he said had several more syllables (sp?) in it than that.

That’s the deal.

Yes. Next week is the last episode until February.

Well I can’t wait for next weeks episode.

When they were in the Pearl hatch and Nikki suggested turning on the other TV’s I said to my wife: “Thanks, Not-Kate!”.

Well I’m glad they brought the TCM back, it’s been a long time. That leads me to believe the writers have not forgotten about other little things (the glass eye helps as well).

So are they going to go back to the Pearl and try a couple of other video feeds? Who knows what they’ll see.

Any chance Cyclops was hanging with Benry’s crew? Remember when Benry was watching Kate and Sawyer talking he was sitting in front of a bank of TV’s that looked just like the Pearls.

My WAG:

The Others (Benry’s Gang), were NOT born on the island. And they currently have ways of communicating with “The World”.

  • Their little suburban community cannot be self sufficient. So they must get regular air drops to provide essential materials and food.
  • They had the clips of the Red Sox winning the World Series
  • They have CD’s.
  • They make muffin’s and hamburgers
  • They have seen Pulp Fiction
  • Where did the Fish Biscuits come from?
  • They must have Internet access (or a WAN link) back to the World (Dharma). They gathered the names of the Losties, so they could forward that list to the back to Dharma. Then they would get all the information back.
  • They need electricity as well, where’s that coming from? Maybe the cable that Sayid found?

MtM

No, to ESM (Eko Smashing Monster).

That was easily the best episode of the year. Too bad it resulted in Eko’s death, but at least he wasn’t conflicted when he died — and that may be the only reason he passed on, because he was able to resolve his issues over his life

Next week: Captain Tightpants becomes the One-Eyed Hatchman!

This was confirmed a couple of episode’s ago. However, last week they said that they had lost their connection to the outside world, so now they are cut-off like the losties.
