Lost 4.05: "The Constant"

:smack: Oh. Right, of course.

That’s where I thought they were going to go with the notebook - that the notebook is his constant.

Wait a sec - if he couldn’t have known his favorite teddy bear would be with him, how did he know his notebook would be with him to remind him of his constant? Or was that not a reminder, just a show for the viewing audience? Did he know all along (in his “new” all along, I guess) that Desmond was his constant, or did he need the notebook to tell him so?

I don’t think that finding your Constant fixes the memory problems, just the aneurysm problem. Desmond doesn’t suddenly remember Sayid at the end of the ep, does he?

Yes (or at least I thought he did).

To me, the way he did it, showed that he knew it was going to be there.

If he was randomly flipping through and just came across that page, they should have handled it differently, IMO. Something like mumbling about an equation, saying, ‘I know it’s in there somewhere’ and then getting to that page and saying, “Oh my god…!”.

I thought it was kind of unclear. Did he remember Sayid, or was he just getting all friendly and emotional because Sayid saved his life and got him a chance to talk to Penny?

Something just occurred to me. This is just the second time in the series that we had “real time”[sup]*[/sup] events taking place off the Island, isn’t it? (The guys in the snow hut calling Penny at the end of the second season would have been the first.)

[sup]*[/sup]“Real-time” as opposed to a flashback or flash-forward.

I agree it was ambiguous. I thought Sayid asked him a question that made it a bit clearer, but somebody needed to ask me a question just then, so I missed it.

Readers of Dan Simmons’ Endymion series know why: because the most fundamental force in the universe is Love.

No, I’m not kidding. That was the major point of the two novels.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming…

He wrote it eight years earlier, along with a lot of other notes and guesses about that guy that was in his lab back in 1996. He remembers there was something important in all those pages of notes he wrote, but either can’t remember the exact message, or is wondering if he made it all up. I find this understandable even without the swiss cheese effect. After all, that’s why he kept a journal. And kept it with him, even when parachuting out of a crashing helicopter over an island in the South Pacific.

Though it’s not like I’d turn down a roll in the hay with either of them, were I single.

[paraphrasing]

Faraday - “Was Desmond exposed to any high levels of radiation or anything?”

Jack - “No.”
WTF?!? Did you forget about the hatch imploding and sky turning purple?!
Otherwise, awesome episode.

I believe it with the swiss cheese effect, but without?

I think I’d probably tattoo on myself the secret to prevent my brain exploding. But then again, I’m quite attached. It helps keep my ears warm.

I don’t know if you’re aware, but Jack is a goddamned moron. It’s the biggest mystery on “Lost”: How did someone so goddamned stupid become a spinal surgeon?

-Joe

Did he actually answer? I thought he just gave one of his blank stares.

Yeah, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes a bit about that. Isn’t Jack also aware that the magnet-thingy caused the plane to crash? (he should be aware of it, of course. That’s not the sort of thing one would forget.

Oh, wait… )

I actually yelled at the TV last night - don’t know the last time that happened, but everytime Jack opened his mouth I shouted “STFU, Jack!”

Wait, he said no? I thought he said yes. scratches head befuddedly

Yes, it was ambiguous, but the impression I got was that he didn’t suddenly remember. I’ve got it DVR’d, so I’ll go back and watch it again tonight and see if I can’t pick up some clues. Or Scooby snacks.

I’ll be on the overpass. It’s gonna be a turkey shoot.

Every time I jump in with a predictions, they’re always wrong…but I never learn. It seems to me that Ben’s man on the boat and the vandalizer of the com room would be Michael. The bearings Ben gave Michael when he left should have led him right to the freighter, right? I guess you’d have to assume that the freighter was already there, but I think we can allow for that due to the whole unpredictability of time thing. Michael has already proven his willingness to commit violence at Ben’s behest. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind bashing a few electronic gizmos if it meant getting WAAALLLLTT home faster…or getting him an ipod…or some new socks…or whatever.

No, he said, “It’s complicated.”

Did anyone notice the bearing that the pilot took? It was 3… something. When Michael left the island, Ben told him to stay on a heading of 325, and he’d find “rescue”. I wonder if it was the same heading.

Also, are we to understand that he veered off course? I could tell if the needle shifted, but if it did, it was only by a tiny amount. And the hand-written note from Dan did not show a straight course, but there were at least 2 turns.

ETA: The setting that Desmond told Faraday was 2.342. 23 42. The Numbers.

My initial reaction was that we actually had a net reduction in unexplained phenomena. We resolved more old mysteries than new ones were introduced.

Jack didn’t say anything in reply, just stood there looking confused.
