Lost 4.05: "The Constant"

Well, to be fair, only we the audience, Sayid, and Desmond know that Frank seems to be on the cool side.

-Joe

Jack has seen Frank say he was glad to get rid of Miles, and he’s had other interactions with him to at least make him think he should trust him. Hell, he let Sayid ride in the chopper with him. If that didn’t take trust, I don’t know what would.

Spoiler, or speculation?

Very minor spoiler from a TV guide like description of a future episode.

“Plus, Locke thinks it was magnets, and anything Locke believes I have to automatically reject on princple”

I always read the Lost threads, but never usually post. But there were a couple of things I’m surprised haven’t been addressed:

Why do people think Frank left the door open? Wouldn’t it be Ben’s mole? Or is everyone convinced that Frank is the mole? I’m skeptical about that point…

Also, nobody’s mentioned that in the Narnia books by C.S. Lewis (aka “Charlotte”), time passes at very different rates in Narnia than they do in our world.

That’s all. Great Ep.

A combination:

[spoiler]Juliet receives an unwelcome visit from someone from her past and is given orders to track down Charlotte and Faraday in order to stop them from completing their mission – by any means necessary. Meanwhile, Ben offers Locke an enticing deal

Juliet’s past comes back to haunt her (and a few others) when someone she would rather not see again resurfaces with orders to foil Charlotte and Faraday’s mission. At the same time, Ben makes an intriguing offer to Locke that could spell even more trouble for the so-called rescue team.

Is it possible that a slightly different version of the flashtime phenomenon explains Charlie’s appearance to Hurley, Kate’s horse, Jack’s father, or Locke’s father? Some of these would definitely be different phenomena (Charlie is dead when he appears to Hurley, for example), but they could be related.

Why do you say that?

ETA: Never mind, I got it.

Maybe it was tossed out of the chopper when they hit the turbulance! But really, no one seemed to react to that.

It might be possible that Frank is the mole. Was it ever really established that the sabotage happened while he was on the island? He seems to be treated as a bit of an outsider on the freighter himself, at least by the two burly sailor dudes that greet them upon landing. Or it could be a totally new character. For some reason I’m skeptical that it’s Michael.

I don’t think Desmond suddenly got his memory back. He’s pretty confused up to that point, Sayid is helping him, and he’s genuinely thankful for that help. I’m pretty sure Sayid’s name is mentioned several times between the helicopter landing, the sick bay, etc. so it’s expected that Desmond would just remember it from then.

I thought last night’s episode clearly established that Flashes Before Your Eyes was a “flashtime” episode. I guess you have to be conscious of the moving around for it to count, but I think now it is clear that was not a flashback but his consciousness getting sent back in time.

Couple quick things -

someone up thread asked why I thought the Desmond/Penney story was so strong. I’ve thought about this. In addition to liking corny love stories when done well, I think it’s because in a show with such good acting and interesting characters, they are the two characters I care about the most & the actors whose work affects me the most. Don’t know why.

I’m real interested in that log from the “Black Rock” ship.

Don’t like that Charlotte character. I’ve seen at least three stories about her and the actress who plays her - she must have a great publicist, but it irritates the hell outta me, then it carries over to the show.

The “others” really should have had more than one submarine.

Wonder if the temple the Lost Tribe of Ben is wandering off to is a portal for teleporting/time traveling.

Did I hear right that the only previous owner of that journal that Penny’s dad bought was the Hanso family?

Yes

I may be misremembering but during their telephone conversation, didn’t Penny say something like, “After I talked with your friend Charlie”? Did anyone else catch that?

Yes.

Nicola Tesla used to shoot x-rays through his head and said that he liked the warm feeling it gave him.

I thought it was an excellent episode. I’ma little conflicted about the time-travel stuff. I was hoping against hope they could pull out an “everything makes sense in a perfectly normal kind of way” explanation, just because it would have been an incredible feat. I am happy enough to enjoy a more sci-fi rationale, which seems to be where it’s headed.

The oddest thing though. I’m browsing theough the Chicago Tribune during commercial breaks. On Page 1 I see an article about a businessman who disappeared from a flight to Hong Kong (link ). Apparently he was owed $3.2 million dollars. Yes - $3.2 million! I point it out to the missus and we chuckle.

Then in the Metro section there’s a small article about a girl who collapsed froma a mysterious illness, and just before she lapsed into a coma (link ) mumbled out that “It’s 1996…” Yes - 1996!

At this point I set the paper down and slowly backed away.

And yes, I’ve been afraid to look at any numbers today.

Some lunch break thoughts…

I think Faraday made Desmond his constant because he knew he would be there. A teddy bear or journal, no matter how important, could easily get lost and so too would his mind.
I’m sure he had the ‘Desmond=constant’ page in there the whole time, but his mind was far enough gone he didn’t remember or couldn’t connect them, even after meeting Des. Once Des made contact with Penny he became grounded in real time, and his memories came back; this allowed Dan to become anchored and allowed his memory to return too.

“real-world explinations”= is this how dejavu works?

Did anyone else laugh their ass off when Minkowski smacked his head on the table for his last timetrip? Ooph, it was a good thud; he really took one for the team.

I suspect that Ben’s spy is actually the ship’s Dr. Forgothisname. Do we know what the shot was he gave Minkowski, was it merely morphine(or some painkiller) or perhaps something more sinister?

The babies that don’t survive, could they be meeting a fate similar to Eloise and Minkowski?

I like the idea of wandering/timewarping souls explaining Jack’s dad, Eko’s bro, and Charlie visiting Hugo.

One of the best episodes of the series, though I’m still impatient to know more about the statue, the others, and of course, the smoke monster(one of my favorite ‘characters’).

I think the Des/Penny story line tops Sun/Jin just because of how much more they mean to the overall story. As much as I like the characters, Sun/Jin episodes are always a bit tedious for me, as they just seem like fillers. Of course that could change at any time on this show.

This episode prompted me re-rent Primer from netflix, break out my Donnie Darko and Langoliers dvds, and have a timewarp weekend.

I’ve also really been enjoying Eli Stone. Lost-Eli-TDS-TCR, damn fine bloc of tv viewing there. What to do when NBC brings the comedy Thursdays back?

Dude…

I think on the DVD extras for this season they should have the cast singing “Let’s Do the TimeWarp Again”. And I think Ben would make a good Dr. Frank N Furter
