They put Desmond in a large electromagnetic device to see if he could survive it going off. He did, and then they flashed sideways to his life without the Island.
He works for Widmore.
also - charley’s back, and things are getting weird.
We know the limo driver (Fisher Stevens) from the regular universe, right? Who was he?
They seem to be implying that Desmond can either be in the sideways timeline, or the “real” timeline, but not both simultaneously, which makes him unique.
“The only person known to have survived an electromagnetic event!” sounded really stupid IMO, by the way. An electromagnetic event? You could generate an EMP right next to me and the only thing that would happen is that my laptop would go dead. Cripes.

I don’t like that they acted like it was a huge shock that Desmond and Widmore would be best buds in the ALT. And, since they are best buds, wouldn’t Desmond know about Widmore’s daughter?

So, perhaps these are flashbacks to how they got “everyone” back after the nuclear explosion? Perhaps the opening of all of them at the top of the well at the start of this season is the aftermath of Daniel, Desmond, and others undoing the bomb.
