Also, I’m thinking Charles and Eloise know about the whole thing. I mean, they were on the Island still, right?
I know this probably won’t happen, but I want the people in love to end happy–Jin and Sun, Charlie and Claire, Desmond and Penny and Rose and Bernard.
I wonder if Vincent exists in the Sideways world…
Eloise would definitely know, if the timeline really did split after the bomb, because she would have Daniel’s old notebook.
No love for Daniel and Charlotte?
I love the twists, but the time stuff makes my brain hurt.
Yeah, I would think so. They’re both “veterans” of the island.
For those of us with less-than-encyclopedic memories, I think now is a good time to check out the Lostpedia.

So are people basically in agreement that the alternate timeline only diverges after the bomb blast on the island? Like, there aren’t any weird timey-wimey effects that extend back in time to before the bomb went off?
I think this was a great episode. Not sure I understand it all, but I was engrossed.
Of course that could be because I love Desmond – in a manly sort of way. And it was nice to see Charlie again, even as weird as he was behaving.
So Daniel and Desmond and Charlie are all having “bleed through” memories? Memories of something that hasn’t happened yet? Well, it happened in the past which was really in the future.
All the face in the mirror quizzical looks by Jack, Sun, Kate, (anyone else) are small instances of this bleed through memory?
And Eloise must certainly know about the other timeline. And she mentioned that Desmond meeting Penny would be a violation. Violation of that timeline remaining intact?
And what exactly is Desmond planning on showing the other passengers of O815?
Sheesh. Things are getting more resolved with every episode, yet also more confusing.
Daniel looked like John Shooter.
Seriously though, it kind of squicks me out watching Daniel get all rapturous about his notebook discovery, because if they “fix” things, isn’t that basically suicide for him?
I believe this to be true. Of course, I just had to look up the fact that the bomb went off in 1977. :smack:
I’m confused - How can Desmond save his wife and son if he sacrifices himself? If he sacrifices himself the son won’t exist will he?
My guess is he’s going to have to stay on the island…alone, forever separated from Penny/Charlie…or at least that’s what Whidmore thinks he’s gotta do.
Why not? He’s in the current timeline on the island–his son is at home with Penny. It’s only if his sacrifice triggers the alternate timeline that the kid (did he have a name? I forget) would blink out. But I didn’t get the feeling that that was Charles’ intention; it seems as if he’s trying to protect the timeline on the island, where his grandson is alive and well.
eta: sorry, this was in response to well he’s back, Fenris snuck in there on me.
Desmond named his son Charlie - after Charlie
Just time-jumping in to say - Love the Desmond, great to get more of Charlie, and Daniel! Really great episode.
Over on NeverSeenLost they suggest a spinoff called “Translators” starring Mikhail and Lennon…
I haven’t gotten that impression at all. Where did you get that idea?
Having watched the episode where Desmond time travels to his breakup with Penny earlier this evening, this episode really harks back to it, especially the scene with Widmore. In this universe, Desmond asks Widmore for his daughters hand in marriage, and Widmore tells him he isn’t even good enough to drink his whiskey, so how could he be good enough to marry his daughter. Desmond then joined the military and entered a sailing race just to get his approval. And Widmore tried to pay off Desmond not to see Penny. So yeah, them being best buds is a big deal…
OTOH they seem to only be best buds at work. As they said, Desmond has never even met his wife, so it’s not surprising he hasn’t heard about his daughter from another relationship.
That does explain a lot. She still seems to have a bit more knowledge than she should though - why would Daniel have written about the guy with the red shoes dying?
I thought it weird that he referred to her as someone who worked for Widmore. I thought she worked in a museum with Miles’ Dad.
Agreed.
My guess: either the sunken island, or NDEs… ![]()
looks at previous post, frowns I thought I included them. Guess not. Yes, Daniel and Charlotte.
Overall, what a great episode, the best this season so far. It’s no surprise though, since Desmond episodes are always wonderful.
Well, I posted that before the episode was over. It looked to me like Desmond physically disappeared when the “electromagnetic event” occurred on the island, but later on it was pretty clear that he had just passed out on the floor, I guess. Although I don’t know, it does seem kind of like they are implying that his consciousness is passing back and forth between the two timelines. Or am I off-base here? I feel really confused about the alternate timeline stuff.
I’m confused about the alternate timeline stuff, but found this episode very, very satisfying anyway.
I’m betting Widmore warned Des about Sayid & Locke, and Des agreeing to go w/Sayid was planned. Will smack-down between Des & Flocke ensue? Preview was intriguing. Like that Hurley looks to be having a moment next week.

Desmond is the “constant.” I may be wrong, but he’s the one that ties the time lines together.
