The most interesting thing is that you can tell that LOST was inspired by Survivor. Except instead of being thrown off the island, you’re killed. Maybe the one who is left gets Jacob’s powers, a kilt, and a broadsword.
I would say that this pretty conclusively shows that they didn’t have it all planned out. If they knew that the bodies were thousands of years old, they wouldn’t have had Jack estimate the age of the skeletons at 50 years.
I just saw an interview w/ Darlton and Cuse where they admitted they didn’t come up with the Jacob/MIB stuff until around season three - and even then it was only a rough idea. I think they had the whole “what the island is” thing figured out from the beginning but not all of the mythology attached to it.
Well, Jack is kind of a moron.
If they were thousands of years old, the bag holding the colored stones probably would have fallen apart when he touched them. We should probably presume (i.e. fanwank) that magic preserved them to some extent so that it only appeared like 50 years had passed.
That’s what I was thinking. The *magical *properties of the island or the cave made the skeletons *appear *only 50 years old. But then, how many 1000s of year old skeletons has Jack examined? He could probably only tell that they were at least 50 years old.
I *really *expected an infant-sized Smoke Monster to shoot out of RealMommy’s womb when they realized there was a second baby.
This episode was lame. It was especially lame compared to last week’s episode. They successfully sucked all the anticipation for the end out of me- now, I just want it to end.
His name wasn’t Jacob. It was the Roman name Iacobus. Just like all the other Latin in the episodeafter the prolgue, it was translated into English.
Heh. I kept expecting the lizard baby from the original V. The scenes were very similar.
Wow this interview is disappointing, particularly with regards to how Darlton addresses the issues of the outrigger shooting and the namelessness of MIB.
Can you point me in that direction? I’d love to see it!
Here’s a question I haven’t seen addressed. There are several scenes where Mom is grinding what looks like black powder with a mortar and pestle. Later, while talking to (I think) Jacob, she’s rubbing it on her shin. What is all that about?
Yep - Here you go.
Careful, the interview is on a Lost spoiler site, but that interview shouldn’t have any spoilers. They’re pretty careful about alerting you to spoilers before you read.
I thought she was making yarn? She was using her shin to wind it.
When she was rubbing her shin, it looked like she was making yarn. She was bringing the strands onto her leg and rolling them together. I assumed the powder was some kind of dye.
OK, maybe it doesn’t mean anything. I was wondering if it had something to do with the anti-smoke monster powder that comes in so handy.
i can’t believe people still want a scientific explaination for everything that’s been going on in the show, and the amount of venom on here when any question gets answered. i mean the show has never really had any exposition right?? there’s always a bit of grey, like maybe it’s this or maybe that with anything they do on this show and its been on for 6 years why would it change now??
honestly the theories you guys came up with are terrible. . . Aaron is Jacob because the actors both have blonde hair?? no he’s actually MIB instead. . . what!?? come on, i’m not as educated as anyone on here seems to be, but how were you gonna explain that one!??
i like the simple answers the show has given already. now MIB’s motivation is clear as if it wasn’t already, its as simple as wanting to get off the island. Jacob isn’t all knowing or all powerful, he’s just as clueless as anyone else on the island. the “mother” died without giving anything away right?? she killed the camp for digging up the “light” for trying to find out what it was, Jacob did the same to Dharma camp through Ben and Richard. well that’s how i see it, so i can see the motivation for that too now. alot more makes sense now.
what explaination could you give for the light, that makes scientific sense?? and for the time travel?? yeah it basically is magic, so what?? its power basically right?? everyone has a little inside them but they all want more and they’ll all kill for it. so far it’s caused time travel and islands to move and teleportation and electromagnetic events, there is nothing rational to explain that, because that stuff doesn’t actually exist does it.
you just have to accept some things on faith, that stuff happens cause it happens on the show, it might not be very satisfying to some, but then its not your story, its Cartlon + Cuse’s story, don’t be upset because the characters don’t do what you’d do in that situation i’e Jin staying behind to die. stop watching and come up with your own fan fiction on what you wanted to happen instead. i’m sure it’ll be a great read.
so i mean sitting there with a checklist waiting for the explainations is probably going to be very, very disappointing isn’t it.
personally, i think everything that i wanted to know and that you all complain about has been explained keeping with the nature of the show and how’s its panned out over the 6 years. the finale might explain what you’re all dying to know in plain english BUT since they’ve never done that previously . . . . maybe just go with it??
or change the freaking channel.
(sorry bout the long post)
I think he meant they were about 50 when they died.
That might turn out to be a retrowank, but it makes sense – he’s a doctor, not an anthropologist.
ETA: The flashback (flashforward? whatever) with Jack, Kate and Locke was the only really annoying thing for me about this episode. Unnecessary, except insofar as the producers can push our noses into the (pretended) fact that they had an explanation Adam and Eve planned all along. And there was Jack’s stupid remark about polar bears. I’m watching a poignant moment feeling sad for Jacob’s family, and then suddenly “whuh? polar bears?”
If I had known that this is where the show was heading, six years ago, I would have stopped watching. Apparently that would have been the right decision. Ugh.
I’m sure I’ll end up watching the last two episodes. At this point, why not? But man, my expectations, which were already quite low, have plummeted.
I have no problem if they’re explaining things with “magic” of one sort or another. Lots of good stories use magic. Unfortunately, so do many bad stories. I’m afraid that LOST will be one of the bad ones.
The worst part, though, is that the writers have blatantly lied to us and feel no guilt about it whatsoever. Specifically, I refer to the interview jackdavinci provided a link to. They’re a bunch of weasels who deserve the pox. The pox, I say!
yeah fair enough too. i know what everyone’s saying is true and it is disappointing, but still the show has been pretty consistent with their explainations - every answer just raises more questions etc. . but still, it’s just a tv show, and this one will have a ending as opposed to all others i seem to get invested in. probably not a ending everyone wants, but one never the less. the mystery is the whole experience, i’m sure it wouldn’t be any more satisfying to have it all spelled out exactly. or maybe i’m wrong, just my opinion. i have enjoyed the ride for the most part.
wait and see. the finale could be good, expectations or not. either way it’ll be the end.
