Lost

To keep it from running off.

They were on their way to Fiji, right? So, assuming everyone was able to find their luggage like Jack apparently was, then everyone should have a week or two worth of changes of clothes.

Let’s think some more about this: The plane’s route was U.S. to Fiji, right? So most of the survivors should be Americans going on vacation, Australians (like the pregnant lady) and Asians going home, and Fijians going home.

It’s unlikely the dog was from the plane for that reason alone. Fiji is rabies-free and has a quarantine. Unless the black man and his son were emigrating to Fiji, they wouldn’t have brought their dog.

People’s luggage will mostly contain light-duty clothes like swimsuits and tank tops

Passengers with chronic conditions like diabetes requiring regular medicine won’t have brought enough for an extended stay, so they should start feeling the effects after a few weeks.

Everyone will have their passports with them, usually even on their persons, so it shouldn’t be difficult to ID most of the bodies. They’ll want to keep a list for when they’re finally rescued.

From.

But your points still stand.

Yeah, reverse everything I just said then.

You may all be interested to know that I have started a GQ thread about this series’ premise.

I did a search first and didn’t see a similar one.

First off, to discuss what people have been putting in spoiler boxes

a polar bear? These guys are in some sort of tropical region, and to rip from a website : The entire circumpolar Arctic region is polar bear habitat. They are equally comfortable in the water and on land. Polar bears can be found on pack ice, coastal islands, coastlines and even out in Arctic waters. They are exceptional swimmers and have been observed in the sea more than 100 miles from the nearest land or pack ice.

I think the noise is caused by wind blowing through and around the plane and assorted debris. You can get some very strange noise coming off of metal under tension, that will vary between sounding organic or mechanical.

JJ Abrams is quoted as saying that everything on the island is within the acceptable realm of possibility: no aliens, dinosaurs, or robot pirate monkeys. Which leads me to believe that the front part of the plane was rolling and shifting as the 3 heroes climbed inside-- and that the pilot was caught by something fairly mundane when he stuck his head out the window-- like a tree branch that picked the right moment to spring free, smacking him in the head and throwing him out the window. Or he pissed off a baboon.

As far as I recall (and I have it on TiVo so I can look again), what they specifically said was that they were over the ocean, the radio went out, and they turned around to land in Fiji, at which point they crashed “a thousand miles off course.”

So it’s actually not clear what the origin and destination of the flight were. If they were coming from Fiji, doing a one-eighty shouldn’t put them that far off course. Seems to me they could be coming from anywhere in the Far East rim, and Fiji was just the most convenient landing point at the time the radio failed.

Oh, and the non-English-speaking couple is Korean, not Japanese. (The actor playing the husband has pulled off a minor hat trick with this role. He was on Angel, he was on Enterprise, and now he’s on a J.J. Abrams show. Nice little series of resume additions, there.)

I was thinking it was some sort of Predator type monster, since no one could see it. If it is big enough to cause that much disturbance in the jungle trees, it should be visible. So my guess is something invisible.

Things that bothered me were the jerky camera work, and the soundtrack. When the ‘thing’ was making noise in the jungle, it was so mixed up with other noises I wasn’t sure exactly what everyone was hearing. I even went back on the TiVo and the scary sound wasn’t clear.

If I remember correctly, didn’t one of the previews show the tail coming off the plane? I don’t think that was in the episode.

The bald guy with the orange in his mouth was freaky.

He’s also been on both ER and CSI. He’s Daniel Dae Kim, and he’s my TV boyfriend.

Don Corleone was doing that with an orange right before he died. I don’t know why I bring that up but it looked so similar that it kind of jumped out at me.

See, now I thought the guy with the orange (I like that actor, BTW) was just trying to lighten the mood for that woman. After all, she didn’t seem really thrilled about plundering a dead man’s shoes. Then she gave him that nasty stare, and I was like “geez, chill out. He’s not hitting on you Miss All That.”

I hadn’t thought of pirate monkeys! That’s great! Giant robotic peg legs, and articulated claw-like… well, claws… for hands!

Somebody asked about the pilot on a previous page. He was played by [url=“http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0342399/”]Greg Grunberg,* whose main claim to fame for SDMB TV-junkies would be about 8 episodes of Alias… or a bit part in an Austin Powers movie. He’s one of those sad, sad actors whose parts are all listed in the SDMB as “Blind Date Guy,” “Limo Driver,” “Roadie,” and “Best Man.”

I asked about him, but I never watched Alias. I did go look him up on IMDB after someone else gave his name a page back, and he was on one episode of The Dead Zone, but nothing else jumps out. He just looked familiar.

Upon re-watching, here’s a few comments:

The son asks his dad, “Is that Vincent?” So Vincent may be the dog’s name, or it may be a person. We don’t know yet.

The black lady who sat next to Jack on the plane (and whom he later resuscitated)said her husband was in the bathroom. Later she was seen kissing a ring (?) with a sad look on her face. I guess her husband died.

Jack’s shirt and t-shirt had a nice rip in it. Later he’s seen wearing a really white t-shirt…with no rip in it. So either he found another one in his size or the people responsible for continuity need to do a better job.

The Korean couple are acting odd. He says to her, “Forget about the others. Stay with me.” or something to that effect. Who “the others” refers to is unclear. It could be the other people who are stranded or someone else. In any event, when it started raining, he was very beligerent that no one share his shelter.

I thought it was odd that, though the pilot managed to make it through the night, Jack didn’t do any sort of check on the people in the front end of the plane to see if anyone was alive.

Oh, and about the “animal” or whatever. Here’s what we know:

It makes weird sounds straight out of Jurassic Park.

It is HUGE because it made a shadow on the cockpit, which was upended at least 30 feet in the air. That’s one hellaciously large thing.

It can fell large trees (which makes one wonder why so many trees are still standing) very easily.

It eviscerates the flesh off its prey, but didn’t consume it right away.

The night of the crash, it was romping around knocking down trees and generally making loud, menacing noises. That makes "it’ nocturnal, or perhaps crepuscular. But then the next morning it came and grabbed the pilot out of his own cockpit. Wait a minute. Is it diurnal, too? Do we know any animals that hunt 24/7, aside from humans?

The guy with the orange is played by Terry O’Quinn, who was also featured on Alias. He is a great tough guy actor, always playing some government issue crime fighting hardass. I expect he will be crucial to the overall mystery as they would never waste him on just a cameo appearance.

During the flashback on the plane, Charley clearly rushes by Jack followed moments later by two other men, one of whom was Terry O’Quinn. Then there is a loud bang from the back of the plane and things start to get hairy. It seems to me that those three people rushing by were fleeing the rear of the plane where they knew something (a bomb perhaps?) was about to happen.

Also, I don’t recall seeing Kate on the plane and I believe she knows the Terry O’Quinn character. I believe she deliberately accompanied Jack to the cockpit wreck just to keep an eye on him. And just to show you how suspicious I am of everybody on the show, I think the Korean couple aren’t a couple at all but agents from North Korea posing as a couple!

He had already found another t-shirt when he started going through luggage looking for a sewing kit. What I want to know is why he went way off by himself before checking to see if he’d need any help sewing it up.

It was raining when “It” snatched the pilot. And just before it started raining, Kate mentioned how odd it was that it got dark so quickly.

:smack: I completly forgot about the kid saying " Maybe it’s Victor". And didn’t associate it with the dog, at the time. But why isn’t Victor being more sociable? If my dog went through something as traumatic as a plane crash, he’d be ontop of me.

:smack: :smack: Vincent

I like Terry O’Quinn as an actor. He always finds interesting things to do with stock roles.

I’ve got a theory about his role here, too. This is a total guess and I’m going solely off the evidence in the first hour of the pilot. This could well be off base and I’ll look like a dingus after next week. Full speed ahead!

Theory: Is it possible his character is mentally handicapped?

He hasn’t really said anything to anybody. He wanders about in a daze, or sits and stares at the ocean. He’s wearing a sort of dorky short-sleeved button-down dress shirt that’s stereotypically associated with the, um, “slow.” And the one solid interaction he’s had with another character was the orange-slice bit, which is either menacing (sending a message to the woman) or wholly innocent and socially inept (note the hint of hurt and confusion when she doesn’t react with a smile).

Dingus or genius? You decide.

Cervaise, I had exactly the same impression, but I did not find the orange slice bit to be sinister. I laughed, my daughter laughed. I think he is mentally and/or emotionally handicapped, but not dangerous. Although, I imagine there are people on the island that may think he is dangerous simply because he is mentally challenged. What is the PC term?
