This story is a good example of why we need to be more environmentally conscientious. Dead baby corpses should be accumulated over time and then burned in the incinerator by the hundreds during winter. That way you keep the place warm with minimal expense, and you don’t have to waste energy digging a big hole in the back yard, to boot.
I guess the outrage here is supposed to be about children of unwed mothers not being allowed to be baptised; hence, not allowed a burial in “consecrated ground” (i.e., a church cemetery).
All well in accord with Catholic (or maybe specifically Irish Catholic?) sensibilities of the time, but oh, so incorrect by today’s sensibilities. In those days, I guess those poor innocent children were doomed to spend eternity in Limbo. But now that there’s no more Limbo, where do they go?
The dead fetuses and infants floating around in heaven really are a bit of a nuisance, but, that’s the price you pay for everlasting servitude to God.
There are a couple things here. First, the death rate of these children was high even by the standards of the time, which certainly suggests the deaths could have been avoided with better care. The general belief (although I don’t know how well established this is) is that these were the children who the nuns were unable to sell to rich Americans because they were sick or disabled - and thus having no value to the nuns who ran the home, they were basically left to die of malnutrition and disease. There is a significant amount of anecdotal evidence from people who grew up in the vicinity of the home that these children were noticeably ill-fed and otherwise neglected.
The other thing is that having died, their bodies were unceremoniously dumped into a septic tank. I think most people would agree that is pretty scandalous, especially given the religious nature of the home.

The method of disposal is disgusting - but the rate is what gets me. Roughly 800 over 35 years comes out to about 1 death every 16 days. At the very best that speaks to an appallingly low level of care.

No money was ever removed from PayPal until being refunded. That’s right, refunded, as in never touched by me or my spouse and returned to the sender as part of the same transaction. In what universe is that a scam or a con?
