This thread looks not entirely boring. I have one that might be passable. An actual hit on country music stations, “Third Rate Romance” by Sammy Kershaw. Here are some sort of illustrative lyrics:
She said, “You don’t look like my type
But I guess you’ll do”
Third rate romance
Low rent rendezvous
And he said, “I’ll even tell you that I love you
If you want me to”
Third rate romance
Low rent rendezvous
Come on baby, light this matchstick
Gonna set the dusk to warm!
I’ll slow down world
and shake hands with you
You’ve seen the difference
And it’s not improving much at all
I’m a boy, yes I am
and I can’t help but you like a little bit.
You’ve seen the difference
And it’s not improving much at all.
Disagree on this one - he’s simply saying that he’ll never love her the way he loved the one that left him “all those many years ago”… to the point that he can’t even say that he loves her.
It’s all right the way your sparkling earrings lay
Against your skin so brown
And I wanna sleep with you in the desert tonight
Cause there’s no one else willing around.
I get this feeling I may know you
As a quick lay that’s gonna end
But this voice keeps whispering in my other ear
Don’t care if I never see you again
I’ve got a peaceful, easy feeling
And I know you won’t let me down
Cause my standards have been lowered
To the ground.
*My girls a liar
But Ill stand beside her
Shes all I’ve got and I don’t want to be alone
My girl don’t see me
When shes with my friends
Shes all I’ve got and I don’t want to be alone
No, there is no other one
No, there is no other one
I cant have any other one
Though I would, now I never could with one*
I hope you don’t mind,
I hope you don’t mind,
That I put down in words
How tolerable life is
Now you’re in the world…
Well, think of the lyricist-- Lorenz Hart was a short, homely gay man. He was no prize himself and he knew it. The lyrics were really Hart’s own dream, his own fantasy of what his perfect lover would say to him.
His hope (and it’s a hope shared by many) was to find someone who’d say “I love you in spite of your flaws… no, better yet, I love you in part BECAUSE of your flaws.”
