“…without so long…”? And I talk about broken English. It’s late I guess…sheesh…
Thank you yojimbo .
Anthracite, we disagree, but you do seem to have a grasp of my point. How? I have no idea. Thank you as well.
Tramtwo,
Pay attention, because this will be the only time I say it.
This is the internet. It is online. You cannot see other people, you cannot hear other people. You cannot watch their body language, or their use of sign language. You cannot pick up nuances in their speech pattern to determine if they’re being sarcastic or not. In fact, without prior knowledge, you have no idea whether the person you’re communicating with is black, white, yellow, red, male, female, jewish, christian, straight, gay, tall, short, has brown eyes or red hair.
The ONLY thing, I repeat, the ONLY thing you can determine from a given post, and thus from a given poster, is what they write. If they do not bother to use use correct grammar, they are ignorant. If they do not bother to spell check, they are ignorant. Some much much much more so than others. If you do not like the fact that online people judge you based on the only thing you have to offer them, the written word, click that little “x” in the corner and log off the internet right now.
As for your “experiment,” I’ve read the thread. The vast majority of the posters were actually being quite kind. That you can judge anything based on who posted and who ignored you in a two hour window is ludicrous at best.
So you wanna step up to the plate and bat with the big boys? Learn to communicate effectively. Me? I’m still wearing my Pampers pull-ups.
Enderw23,
I also think you can tell a lot by how people choose their words.
As mark twain said, “I pity the man that can think of but one way in which to spell a word.” I don’t think anyone would call him ignorant, and no I don’t try to compare myself to him just trying to make a point.
Taking your point to its logical end… on the Internet you judge someone by his or her appearance. In other words, the look of their post… When you have read enough of their postings you can then draw inference as to their intelligence, race, sex, motivation, experience level, religion etc. How is my perception of what you’ve posted?
My point in this thread, as in the other locked thread, is that many members, that I have seen, (small overall number of total membership) are engaged in the very activity the are so quick to deplore. “Judgement based on superficial characteristics.”
While you may disagree with me, I feel that my post do serve to spotlight ignorance. I have not offered any solutions, other than being straight with people, as is my naïve view of what SDMB is all about.
As I hope, it is reflected in this post, I understand and will try to adapt.
Sorry for my sloppiness…
Dale
I think Samuel Clemens’ experience with the Internet was sorely limited. However, you need to understand that it’s not spelling that Enderw23 is referring to, it’s grammar. While we’re generally able to make out the gist of your post with little problem (even with the occasionaly typo or spelling error), sometimes there’re some thoughts you convey that are poorly worded. Please take this as constructive criticism only… but be a tad more mindful of syntax when you’re writing out a post.
A good idea is to read your post back to yourself (out loud, if need be) after you type it. After all, we wouldn’t want a single mistake to hamper the communication process, would we?
Well, no, not exactly. You’re new. We know very little about you. As such, the only thing we have to go by when deciphering the meaning of your posts is what is written. It’s not so much the “look” as it is the “message”.
For example, compare the two sentences “Bob masticates a lot” and “Bob masturbates a lot”. Completely different meanings, yet they look (and sound) similar.
But Mr. Two, over the Internet, the only characteristics we can get from other people are superficial. I can’t very well develop a deep, emotional relationship with someone I’ve never met or talked to in real life, have I? People don’t come here expecting to find their One True Love or their Soul Mate (although it has happened), they come here to have simple, straightforward, no-strings-attached communication with other people.
While I have no doubts that you have only the best of intentions, it seems as if the meaning of your posts was misunderstood (hence the important of good grammar skills via the 'Net!). Also, there’s a lot that’s been happening over the SDMB over the past many months that’s gotten a lot of people on edge.
There’s an unwritten rule on the SDMB that people who post mostly in the Pit are only wanting to cause trouble. Now, I have no doubt that you’re completely innocent (after all, it’s an unwritten rule), but please try to realize how you’re coming off: You’ve provided a lot of criticism to the general board populace, and have interacted very little with them in return. Would you react kindly if someone walks up to a group of you and your friends and begins telling you that your speaking styles are incorrect?
Again, please take this as constructive criticism only.
Noted. I do think that you make good points. I also feel that people every day on the net as well as in real life, judge people. I have no problem with this, my problem is with people who act as though they don’t, or who try an justify their actions.
I do know that anyone has butchered English as much as Mark Twain. Sorry if I pissed people off, but if it got them to pause and think for a second, then I think it was worth it. To me anyway. Once again thank you all for taking the time.
Is this a record for the pit, number of post without the f word?
It may fucking well be.
Tim, you fucked-up fucking fuck! You fucked a fucking good fuck of a thread!!! You… oh, nevermind.

Hmm… Having read a few of tramtwo’s posts, I almost get the feeling that english might not be his first language. If that is the case, we may not want to be too critical of his grammar skills.
But if that isn’t the case, then he is either mentaly deficient, or very young. And again, perhaps we shouldn’t be too critical of him in the grammar department.
Or not.
I’d also consider Dyslexia but that isn’t the case with this guy. I think he’s just a young kid facing, hopefully, a long academic road.
tramtwo, I suggest keeping a low profile while ingesting a little of the culture of this board and maybe learning something. This is actually not a bad alternative to academia if you do want to improve your grammar and mental discipline – people are willing to offer assistance and thread based dialogue can be a good motivation.
I have not asked for, and expect no quarter. Isn’t it a good feeling to know you’re alive?
Just once, I’d like to see some originalty in these things.
tramtwo, the next time you finish typing up a reply, try using the keyboard combination of Alt+F4 before you send it. It will make your post MUCH better.

Anyone else notice that Rosiewolf and Idnew are active on that board that tramtwo linked to?
That’s the best Yoda impression I’ve heard in a long time.
Good to see you back, Flyp. Stick around this time? Pretty please?
I know that this has nothing to do with the op but I just have to know…
RickJay are you under the sign of Taurus?
It is so nice to meet another Al fan.
Okay now carry on with the rest of the thread around me. I would have added the word fuck a few times here and there but I promised my son I would try to watch my language. Sorry I couldn’t be more help on the quest.
