How the hell did this devolve into another Michael Moore discussion?
When Starving Arsehole suggested that only successful politicians–the leading class, he seems to be suggesting–should have a right to criticize the government. You know, like in Soviet Russia, or fascist Italy. The governed are not to offer criticism, under any circumstance. Because even though Michael Moore is a voter, he’s “outside” of the American political system, so he should keep his mouth shut.

With regard to lissener’s (what an ironic, or should I say satirical, name) comment, I merely said it’s easy to stand on the outside and find fault with what others are doing; it’s harder to be on the inside having to fight the battles necessary to make positive things happen.
Clearly, Moore has every right to do so, and I in no way suggested otherwise. But friend lissener was trying to portray him as some sort of exalted artist, and I merely replied that what he did was easy and anyone could do it if they had Moore’s extraordinary lack of aversion to looking like a dickhead.

How did this thread get hijacked onto the question of whether Michael Moore is or is not an artist? What a completely irrelevant comparison to Lynndie England. Say what you want about Moore (I’m a lefty and not a fan of his), he has never done anything to warrant a comparison to England, who is a sick degenerate who exemplifies everything that is wrong with what we’re doing in Iraq. Some of the guys in this thread obviously have a personal ax to grind with each other. Why not open another thread and have at it? Some of us want to make snide comments about how ugly Lynndie England is.
How about this? On Real Time with Bill Maher, Gen. Karpinski said she thinks the shit in Abu Ghraib multiplied negative feelings about America in the Muslim world a hundred-fold. Thanks, Lynndie! You’d be ugly even if you were the spitting image of Angelina Jolie. Thank god that in this case, the inside of the person matches the outside.

I read the thread, so I know how Moore got tied in; it was a rhetorical question meant to gently point out that you and lissener managed to hijack a perfectly good thread to grind your personal axes. I think we should be able to talk about the inner and outer hideousness of Lynndie England without having it go off on a wildly tangential partisan bullshit about Michael Moore. I didn’t open this thread to read about Moore, and the OP didn’t start this thread to watch you and lissener go at it. Start a new fucking thread if you want to go 'round and 'round, is that too much to ask? You can take issue with people discussing her ugliness if you like, but try to stay loosely within the realm of the OP, and not rant about a totally irrelevant topic, OK? I don’t think that’s so hard to grasp.

I’m sorry you feel your thread was hijacked. Normally, if I’m going to hijack a thread for some reason, I apologize in advance and try to keep it short. But I don’t think I should have to sit back and not respond to untrue or misleading comments about the things I do say just because the offending comments lead off topic.

Anyway, back on topic: another lovely photo of Lynndie. This article tells us about how she left the trailer park (which was behind the saloon and the sheep farm) to join the Army. She’s the kind of person who is the reason behind the unfair stereotypes of trailer park denizens, eh?
What I like is how she claims her actions were just “pranks.” But if it was done to her, it’d have been flagrant abuse, I imagine. Contrariwise, in this interview, she says that she was “ordered” to pose for those pictures, that she felt “kinda weird” doing it, but she was only doing her job. Yeah, right. Good one. The gorgeous and photogenic Pvt. England should get her story straight before she starts talking, but I imagine brains is no more her strong suit than beauty is.
And I never said or implied by my behavior that it was about Moore. I asked why, if it’s wrong for me to make insulting comments about Moore, which I was roundly excoriated for in this forum, it’s okay to make insulting comments about England.
My post was about the relative right or wrong involved in making ad hominem attacks on people based on their appearance, and the apparent hypocrisy involved in its apparently being okay in the case of England and not in the case of Moore.
Nor is it yours to jump in and attempt to regulate the words or intent of another poster’s posts.

No, it’s about venting with regard to an ugly human being. The fact that she’s ugly on the outside is just a bonus. It might be trivial (and I don’t think it is; I think England’s ugliness is emblematic of the ugliness of the conflict in Iraq), but that’s hardly the issue-- there are trivial threads on the SDMB all the time. The issue is the fact that a thread about whatever could be totally taken over by your irrelevant argument, a topic that people who open this thread don’t want to talk about. We might want to talk about the OP, ya know?
Surely you can see that the conversation moved away from that comparison and into a fight about the merits of Moore. Also, so what if people want to talk about her ugliness? It goes along with the ugliness of her actions, and if you don’t like it, that doesn’t give you the right to move the thread to a conversation you’d rather have.
