Me and a friend of mine from Americorps have been talking about seeing a drag show (as in men in dresses, not cars) while in Maryland. I’m from Mississippi and he’s from Lousiana, so we both know precisely zilch about the cool local places such an attraction might be found. We saw an advertisement for one in Philly, but it didn’t allow 18-and-over (I’m 19). So in the interests of a good time, I came here to see if any of the MADopers knew of some good shows in the area. Our prerequisites are:
*Must allow 18-and-over (I don’t plan to drink but some bars won’t let you in anyway)
*Must be in Philadelphia, Baltimore, or D.C. NYC probably has lots of happening spots, but it’s a little far away to be feasible.
Oh my, Nichol. Just; Oh MY! See, your granddaddy was right when he said that no good would come of you traipsing off to the flatlands. The good red mud of M’sipi is hardly off your boots and here you are seeking the location of liquor bars with quality drag shows.
How ya’ gonna keep ‘em down on the farm after they’ve seen Pa-ree?
In DC, there’s a restaurant called Perry’s (on Columbia Rd near the intersection of 18th St) that does drag brunch on Sundays. Otherwise, you might be SOL, because most of the drag bars I know of require you to be 21 in order to enter.
However, without meaning to pee on your Cheerios, I personally find if you’ve seen one drag show, you’ve seen them all. I have been to shows in NY, Berlin, LA and Las Vegas…same old tired queens tossing attitude while lipsynching “I Am What I Am”…other than a few drag queens like Divine or Charles Busch, most take themselves FAR too seriously.
Still, if you have never been to one, by all means go! It is a hoot to see one for the first time…
