MADs: Memorial Day Weekend Picnic, Sun 5/25

Where: Seneca Creek State Park in Montgomery County, MD.

When: Sunday, May 25, 11am - dusk.

What: A picnic pavilion, food, a lake, a playground for the kids, woods, hiking trails, and (of course!) Dopers.

I’ll reserve the pavilion and bring burgers, buns, and charcoal for the grill. If others can volunteer to bring beverages*, condiments, side dishes, munchies, plates, plasticware and stuff, then we’ll be set.

  • I don’t see anything on the Web site saying alcoholic beverages are forbidden, but I’ll call tomorrow to see if they’re OK.

Why: because it’ll be fun.

So, who’s in?

Let me add that Seneca Creek State Park is off I-270 near Gaithersburg.

I’ll let you know tomorrow. We’ll have just gotten back from Disney!

And if I come…

Wine or Ginger Ale?

I’m planning to call them today and find out if wine’s allowed.

Sounds way mondo cool. We are an almost probably.

Us, too. Lady Chance is checking her development schedule for that week just in case her team has to work over the weekend.

I have to work until two pm, but its a maybe. Jonathan Chance, Ginger Ale. Most assuredly.

They just finished the new batch. We picked some up this weekend.

You would. Dave and I are going to Pittsburgh for his grandmother’s birthday and to do her spring cleaning. This is inviolable. He will rot in hell forever if he doesn’t go.

Robin

We’re a go. All three Chance’s will be in attendance.

The pavilion I’ve reserved for us is the Bobwhite Shelter (see park map).

I called and asked about alcoholic beverages; they are allowed at the pavilion itself, but we can’t go wandering afield with them.

Sorry you and Dave can’t make it, Robin. And here I was hoping for some (literal) war stories! But we’ll toast his safe return.

Lucretia, JC, Ginger - hoping your maybes turn into yesses!

'S okay, RT. There will be more chances to welcome Dave home. It’s just that the apples not only fell close to his family tree, I’m starting to wonder if they ever fell off at all.

Robin

This is just a few miles down the road from me. I may have other obligations that weekend, but I’ll see if I can make it.

What part of ‘we’re a go’ means ‘maybe’?

The part where I opened the reply window between Robin’s post and yours, then forgot to preview. :smack:

Glad you (and Lady Chance and Kid Kate) will be there!

Miss Mapp - please do try to make it! We’re always on the lookout for new converts to our cult.

I’m planning on making it, possibly with a friend. I have no clue what I am going to bring. I’ll think of something though.

Kind of a haul from So. MD (2+ hours) and what with church and all in the morning, I’ll have to go with a definite almost maybe. Sounds like lots o’ fun, though.

TTO - by all means, bring friends. We will assimilate them!

El Marko - I thought I was the only Southern Marylander here! Where the heck are you? I’m in northern Calvert.

Or, another excuse to bump the thread. Anyhow, here’s info about the shelter and the park, loosely transcribed from the website:

The Bobwhite shelter is in a wooded area. It holds 50 people, and has 10 parking spaces. A comfort station is within walking distance. There’s drinking water and BBQ grills right there, and it’s next to a horseshoe pit and an open play area, and close to the lake shore.

The park has 6300 mostly wooded acres, over 25 miles of trails, Clopper Lake, Seneca Creek, a disc golf course, boat rentals, and a concession stand. Sounds like a nice place. I’ve never been there; I was looking for a park with a picnic shelter large enough to accomodate a reasonable number of Dopers, and small enough to not put a huge dent in the wallet.

One drawback of getting together in a park: it costs $2 per person to get in. OTOH, I know what we tend to spend per person when we get together in restaurants, so that hopefully shouldn’t be a big deal.
