Mafia: Baker Street [Game in progress]

Oh, yeah, I’d definitely like to see Pizza play. In the one game I played with him, he and I definitely had very different styles and clashed because of it, but that’s part of the game.

Although, then again, that game we were on different sides, so it’s hard to say how much of the clash was due to style.

It was the horror movie game where I was the Alpha Wolf and you came back as a dead guy. I believe it was the most recent Storyteller-run game here on the SDMB.

I think I may have briefly convinced you that I wasn’t a target at some point, but as I recall you targeted me really early on after I got overeager about accusing people.

No worries though, people still lynched me immediately. They tend to do that when I’m innocent, and leave me alive, bafflingly, all game long when I am guilty.

Ah, I see what the issue was.

I was lynched as a vanilla townie right away, so that’s why I didn’t engage enough with the game to remember it too closely.

That’s definitely how you get me to disconnect- take away my ability to vote. If I can’t get someone to die by my hands the thrill kinda disappears.

Where’s Mhaye when you need him.

The only game I’ve played with you (in which game you happened to be Scum), I think it was your first game with us, and so people were unsure of how to judge you. Then again, though, you did start out by telling us what your personal scum tell was, and then displayed it.

Vote Pleonast.

But of course. Gotta give people a fighting chance now.

Pizza - you should play. It’ll be a good game for your style of play, and I’d like to see what you’d make of it. I can put you in Spot 22 and hold Spot 23 for peeker.

No further sign ups at this time, though. Assuming I get through all the PMs today (and I should have no problem doing that), the game will start tomorrow (Wednesday) sometime early in the day (or maybe even tonight, if I’m feeling energetic).

This is my favorite part!

Mmmkay, you sure you don’t want to have a reserve player in case someone goeth inactive?

Very well, I’ll go in. Another game I’m in is moving at a pace which requires not a whole lot of attention on my part.

However, at any point I am liable to drop in activity severely. Work is beyond ludicrous at the moment.

Ludicrous speed! Go!

Update: I’ve randomized roles (with pizzaguy, without peeker, who hasn’t registered) and completed about 75% of the role PMs. I have to go out tonight; if I get home at a decent hour, I’ll finish up and send out PMs tonight. If not, tomorrow.

If Peekercpa doesn’t turn up I will get back into mafia.
Otherwise I will go and start a peanut gallery thread.

As much fun as it was trying to write out the rules with color included, I think it’d be advisable to make sure that the (few, straightforward) rules are spelled out explicitly before I begin sending role PMs. Accordingly:

The Setup
**1.**There are only two sides here: The Town, sometimes identified as “Yours” and the Scum, sometimes identified as “Mine.” There are no third parties, whether malicious or not, and no mechanism by which a player may become a third party.

**2.**Sherlock Holmes is Town; James Moriarity is the Scum leader. Any other suppositions regarding the alignments of specific characters from the Sherlock Holmes canon ought to be regarded as potentially suspect.

3. This is not a no-vanilla game, nor is it one of those sneaky games where there’s one vanilla snuck into the mix to make it technically no-vanilla. There are a limited number of power roles and many vanilla roles. However…

4. All vanilla characters have unique names and background details. Each role PM was written from scratch with no copy and paste used, so attempt to assess variation in role PMs at your own risk. Also, importantly:

5. With one or two modest exceptions, every player - Town and Scum - has been given a single clue about the game setup, the roles, or the characters. More than half of these clues are 100% accurate; some proportion of them that is >0% and <50% are false. False clues have been given only to Town-aligned players. I will state for the record that I have by various means attempted to ensure that public reveal of certain clues or other information may not always benefit the side of the player given the clue.

6. All roles were assigned completely at random.

The Mechanics

  1. Most importantly, there is no Night phase. The game will continue from Day One directly to Day Two. All actions, including the Scum kill and any power role actions, must be submitted prior to Dusk and will resolve along with the lynch. In practice, this means that you might (for example) attempt to investigate a player that has been lynched. This is an intended effect of the setup.

  2. Note that the lynch is considered simultaneous with other actions, such that a lynched player can still perform a Scum kill, an investigation, or a protection for the Day on which (s)he is lynched.

  3. Voting is standard; votes in red and unvotes in blue. You may vote for as many players as you wish, but you may not vote more than once for the same player

  4. Highest vote total at the deadline, which will always be Wednesday at 12:00PM US Eastern time, will be lynched. There is a method for resolving all tie votes, but it will not be revealed publicly at this time.

Please post any questions about any of this; I’d like to resolve as many questions as possible before sending out role PMs.

This is in conflict with what you said earlier:

Just wanted to clarify that the new rule is the correct one.

No questions besides Chronos’. Love the “no night phase” twist, should help the game sustain momentum.

Yeah, the earlier post was “by” the bad guy and it was intended to include a variety of information, some reliable, some not. I have since abandoned that idea as unworkable and decided to post a straightforward rule set as shown.

Much much obliged. I appreciate the creativity of the first thing, but boy, knowing your rules and victory conditions reliably greatly enhances the player experience.

Speaking of which - sample vanilla role PM below the line:

Welcome to the game; you are Robert Drake

ROLE TYPE: Vanilla
ALIGNMENT: Yours (Town)
WIN CONDITION: You win when all of Mine (Scum) have been eliminated.

*Mr. Drake –

Colorful invitation sort of thing goes here.

Sign-off,

M*

POWERS: You have no powers, but I may insult you at this point.

CLUE: A woman named Jean Grey is in possession of false information that may be ignored.
