Mafia: Evil Dead III Commentary. Dead people only! NO SPOILERS

Okay, I’m not spoiled (I don’t even know if there is a spoiler board somewhere) but despite my death and the fact that I hated 90% of the game, I’m still reading along. Because that’s the kind of masochistic kibbitzer I am.

Well okay, as I said, it’s not really spoilers, at least not from me, but if anyone does know what’s going on (storyteller for example) feel free to post in here. I’m just bursting with a comment and I wanted to get it out somewhere.

My comment is:

Are Astral Rejection and Cookies Scum, or are they just playing really really badly for Townies? They can’t seriously be leaping on LightFoot’s obvious giveaway, can they?

By the “obvious giveaway” I mean the fact that LightFoot posted, as a result of Mahaloth’s claim:

I mean… Astral in particular seems to be pushing people to reveal their roles (he was pushing at Mahaloth to reveal whether he was the cop), and now LightFoot makes a particularly sloppy (and this is coming from ME!) error by basically revealing flat-out that s/he doesn’t have a vanilla role, and instead of ignoring it, which IMHO is something that any Townie should do if they fear a Town Power Role has inadvertently let the cat out of the bag, he highlights it! And Cookies leaps on it too!

I understand if they’re Town, they may think that LightFoot is Scum and has just made a huge blooper. And maybe LightFoot is Scum and has made a huge blooper, right on the heels of Stanislaus’s goof.

But it seems rare for Scum to make TWO such obvious errors, one right after the other. I’d imagine the Scum team have been falling over themselves after Stanislaus’s slip-up to make sure their ducks are in a row. So I’m inclined to think LightFoot is a Town Power Role who’s screwed up. In which case, any good Town player should shut the fuck up and let it slide, or even take one for the team and lie to indicate that there are some discrepencies in town vanilla role descriptions.

(Personally I’m not convinced Mahaloth is Scum either. If I were away from my PM and described my role I might call it a movie extra; the hypothetical IMDB listing is one of the first lines in the role description. On the other hand, it is true that we’ve all been described once dead as Peasant Redshirts. So I dunno.)

I’m also pegging ortho and Red Skeezix as Scum. Red in particular is playing nothing like he’s played in the other games I’ve been in with him. He was alll over those games. Now he’s barely talking. So maybe he’s keeping his head down?

Okay, that’s my commentary, FWIW. Anyone who’s spoiled, feel free to tell me how wrong I am.

FYI, I’ve reported this thread asking a moderator to add the word FORBIDDEN to the title, because the dainty folks still playing the game don’t think “Dead People Only” is a good enough “keep out” sign. They don’t even seem aware that the SDMB has a history of having a Spoiled-only read-along commentary thread.

God, am I glad I got staked. Thank you, Stanislaus (as you’re the only Scum representative who might be reading this).

No spoiled commentary should be posted in this thread, since it’s not password-protected. If you want spoiled commentary, contact Storyteller; he has a password-protected board set up for that.

I’ve been skimming the game.

I hadn’t followed the choie saga, but I do understand the frustration that comes from being put under the microscope where everything you do “looks scummy.” All that without consideration of how anything done might “look townie”.

Anyway, I’m pro Astral Rejection. If Astral is scum I will be very disappointed in myself.
Before the stanislaus lynch, I completely agreed with everything Astral Rejection said. Up to the win-condition fiasco (which I still don’t understand how that happened since SOP is for the moderator to give scum the vanilla role PM exactly as it was given to everyone else, but whatever). Before the win-condition made it more clear that Stanislaus should be lynched, I was amazed that town was so willing to lynch based on an anonymous message on The Barn. It made no sense to me at least. I thought Astral was on target for not believing it.
As a side note, I’m also amazed that scum didn’t try to discredit The Barn by posting a false message on it during Night Two. Posting a false positive on the Barn seemed like the obvious play there. Perhaps it was too obvious, and that is why scum didn’t do it. Anyway, it seemed to me at the time that The Barn message was more likely to have come from scum than from a town cop simply based on the fact that scum have more messages to use.
Obviously I was wrong, but the reasoning (Astral’s reasoning) was sound.
The one thing that I don’t like about Astral is that she didn’t flip on Stanislaus when the win-condition inconsistency happened. I’m wondering what went on with Astral there. She might have felt unable to flip-flop due to that “looking scummy,” but I can see town motive for this view as well as a scummy one.

As for Lightfoot. Such a pointout is not indicative of scum. If Astral and/or Cookies are scum, then pointing out Lightfoot’s mistake neither helps nor hurts them. The only argument one might make is that in the very slim chance that scum missed Lightfoot’s mistake, then a townie pointing it out might be considered a mistake. But that presupposes that the person pointing it out is Town.
Personally, I don’t believe it to be a mistake. Pointing out the state of the game is fair. The information was out in the open. In mafia something is either secret or not. There is very little of ‘secret simply because scum are too stupid to figure it out themselves.’

As an observer ( I assume non game participants allowed here as per the SDMB peanut gallery thread norm) I would say it is unlikely cookies and astral are scum if lightfoot is town.
I would imagine if Lightfoot was a town power role who just outed themselves , a scummy cookies or astral would sit quite and discuss over nightly dinner discussions.
They can get a easy town power role night kill. Trying to paint lightfoot as a scum in the hope they can get a town power role lynch is high risk. Plus it highlights to any town protector role who is not paying attention that that protector should think about protecting lightfoot.
If lightfoot is scum then a scummy cookies or astral could be telling lightfoot to dial it back ( in thread) as LF just outed themsleves as non vanilla town and as far as know the scum can’t communicate during the day.

My gut is LF is scum either trying to get some town cred by either pilling on a fellow scum by calling out the redshirt claim, or scum just trying to railroad a town. That makes cookies and astral suspicious.

If I were town I would force an LF claim via a probable lynch, if LF is town and claims, she is no worse danger than she is now as scum have just put a large target on her. If LF is scum, that allows for counter claims andverification, whatever way LF swings , I think that gives some good leads on Astral and cookies being town/scum.

Remembering of course I am several years rusty in mafia and in was pretty crap then anyway.

Also ignoring the whole 3rd party issue as well.

Yes, I’ve asked a mod to post no spoilers in the title. My bad. I suck at everything I do here.

Not at all, there was a tradition of calling it the forbidden thread but hardly a rule everyone should know. As for playing mafia, in my opinion it is just about playing and enjoying the interactions no matter what they are. Some people think they are great and shout loudest in place of thinking, some are truly devious and analytical masterminds, most seam to just play becuase it is fun.

Anyway it occurs to me that my Lodgeick* was off, I still think a town flip on LF bodes well for Cookies and Astral, a scum flip on LF is a 50/50. Assuming we ever get to a flip on LF.

  • Lodgeick is a trademark of Mollusc and Clam Mind Improvement Enterprises and should in no way be confused with actual logic, rational thought or indications of sentient being, actors wee used in place of actual thinking people in the preparation of these posts, no endangered bivalves were used in the production, terms and conditions may apply.

Storyteller did provide everyone the vanilla role PM exactly as it was given to the real vanillas. The problem (for stanislaus, at least) is that he wasn’t claiming vanilla, and he didn’t think to use that PM as a template for his fake.

And I tend to agree that Town should assume that Scum have already noticed everything. If nothing else, there are enough of them collaborating that at least one of them is likely to notice slips like that, and there’s no reason they won’t share them amongst themselves.

A the risk of being tedious

LF town, scum have minimal benefit pointing out in thread
LF town , town have nothing to gain by not highlighting as one assumes scum will have spotted and so town LF is in danger anyway, plus it is information to discuss
LF scum, scum could be warning LF in the game thread that LF slipped up and needed to start thinking of a cover story fast, whilst also getting some smudging backup for themsleves if LF flips scum.
LF scum, town has nothing to loose by pointing out LF slip up as they dont know either way, not discussing doenst help town.

I suppose you could extend and look at why LF painted Malahoths PM as " awfully convenient and jolly well thought out for a scum" smudge
LF town power role and genuinely thought Malahoth was making up shit with no actual knowledge of Malhoths role
LF town power role and knows malahoth is making up shit
LF scum and hadn’t thought about the vanilla PM being posted and was smudging a town Malahoth
LF scum getting bussing points for bussing know scummy malahoth

After that it is turtles, all the way.
Either way I think town should push LF aggressively ( but in a nice way) , letting it go into the night allows scum to discuss and help out a possibly scummy LF.

I suppose I should let that go and look at some other stuff. In case any one is reading who shouldn’t , I am not spoiled so this pure WAG.

On the barn messages, has anyone done a count on number of message known to be false, vs expected number of scum? If town take a guess at say 5 scum based on game balance ( has this happened I have skimmed and did not see) , and if people can only post to the barn once , then town can gradually know over time which post were BS and that will lend further creedence to the other messages. Certainly for end game benefit rather than now.

I think I can safely share a little insight into that.

Story put the Vanilla PM in the game thread so that not only did scum/SKs know it, but also everyone knew it was public knowledge. In an earlier post, he had also shared the Town Win Con - but as it wasn’t part of a role PM, didn’t include the magic words “I am Town”.

In a spectacular display of incompetence, I Ctrl-F’d the thread for Win Con and copied what appeared in story’s first post. With just a little more attention to detail, I’d have taken it from the full PM.

Given that I think I could just about have scraped through, that’s shockingly poor play - but no fault of story’s.

Oh. Okay.
To be fair to you, that inconsistency should not have happened. Though to be fair to storyteller, finding all the teeny tiny mistakes in a game design is super hard. Ideally, the two posted win conditions would have been consistent and accurate. That kind of “gotcha” is not a fun part of the game (in my opinion).
Perhaps a good option is for the moderator to send the vanilla PM or whatever to the scum via PM as well. In these single thread games, finding important info like that could be a big pain in the neck. I also like an actual PM since there have been times in the past where timestamps and formatting became a topic of discussion.

I don’t know what he is, but Astral’s definitely fishing, and I don’t like that. I couldn’t say whether I think he’s scum, but I’m with **choie **- when I play as town (all two times), I wouldn’t draw attention to power role slips. Just no good can come of that.

I know that the game’s way, way past it, but I think the wolves’ misuse of the apostrophe on the barn N1 was intentional. I know you talked about it, choie. I’m reminded of the LOTR game, in which the scum had to find and recruit the spider, which was **Astral **in that game. I’m kind of thinking that the wolves are using the barn as a recruitment tool - they’ve misused the apostrophe twice now, and that can’t be accidental. And nobody noticed it (or seemed to), but the only other person who’s misused an apostrophe (that I’ve seen so far) is cookies. (In one of her posts awhile back, she used the wrong “it’s” - she used the contraction for the possessive.) I’d put money on her being a recruit to the fuzzy side. That said, I’m really bad at this, so I’m probably wrong.

Snickers
I disagree on the first point, if it was a town slip you have to bet that teh scum will notice it, and town have no way of knowing if it is a town powerrole slip or a scum slip so best highlight it so protector roles can act if they feel it is a town slip.
Not sure if LF is scum trying to get out of saying anything - or town WIFOMing scum into taking a hit at her.
Interesting point on the apostrophe - that could normally be put down to inattention, but not with this crowd.
What’s with the pizzaguy zombie - is it a game mechanic (recruit) or just comedy colour?

New game sign ups at Idlemafia for anyone bored/chilling for the next game.

Once Upon a Time-themed game.

And I’ve changed the title as you asked.

When it first showed up, Storyteller made clear that he was dead, untargetable, and could not vote nor be voted for… but that he could still take part in discussion.

Walp, I’m dead. People seemed to think I was crazy scummy in my actions, but (as you can see) I believed everything I did was in town’s best interest.

Shame our cop died without revealing.

Also, I suspect that’s another fake message. Storyteller explicitly said Pizza has no actions.

Well apparently we shouldn’t be talking with dead people since choie started this thread and can now participate in the game thread.

For what its worth, I was on board the Astral Rejection is awesome train. The stanislaus message (though correct) was super fishy.
