[Mafia game] The Realm of Phere

Hi, everybody! I’m back, but I’m still in Turkey for the next week or so, so my participation will be limited. I’m also still a Lawful Good Town ranger, so the theory about us resurrected people coming back as scum (while an intriguing possibility that I was looking forward to testing the validity of when I opened my resurrection PM) is not true in my case. I’m the same as before, minus some hit points and my bow.

I join in the puzzlement at the apparent closeness of endgame – how would the math work out, given the deaths last night and assuming that I’m Town – to put us at lylo or close to it? How many more scum are we likely looking at?

I had some suspicions after my death, but when charlie flipped neutral they weren’t borne out. Is PetW still in play? Has he even posted since Day Two?

Welcome back, Gadarene! Good to see you. Enjoy your vacation, and play when you get a chance.

PetW was a wizard with no alignment information given. PetW is also very, very dead.

I for one never doubted you. Well, once you were dead, anyway.

He (he?) was killed a few Days ago, and for some reason flipped… neither good nor bad, neither town nor scum. His flip was “obscure” or some such lingo. I’ve brought this up a couple of times because it’s weird as hell and it’s the only such death that resulted in no alignment reveal whatsoever. But oddly no one seems to care about this.

So far the only “one-off” flippers have been, as far as I can tell, Weedy (Very Evil), PetW (???), and Visorslash (Evil). I would assume this indicates… something. But hell if I know exactly what.

Rambling comments:

If/when we do our claims, let’s do pick a player (Guiri if you dislike my suggestion of LightFoot) and PM info to him/her rather than posting publicly. This will maximize problems for Scum. (Unless we accidentally pick Scum to receive PM’s.) Note that using secret PM’s and adopting a claiming order are not exclusive: we can do both for greatest caution.

Should reveals be complete? Roles, objects, etc. as well as actions?

In the recent writeup

there may be an implication that all depends on a single remaining Very Evil player. (I realize this is contrary to the recruited resurrectee theory.)

But who is the scum? There are fourteen living players; if we set aside the resurrected Townies and Pizza himself, ten are left. Some of these players are inactive. Post-count is an extremely crude measure of activity, but it’s a start. I ranked the players by number of posts on or after 15 May (my time):

choie – 45
Lightfoot – 21
Tanaer – 21
septimus – 18
Silver Jan – 17
[del]Lilflower[/del] Glee – 9
[del]RealityTrip[/del] Inner Stickler – 8
Scathach – 4
storyteller0910 – 4
Fubbleskag – 0

At some point, a player’s activity is so low that it’s considered a moral victory by Town, if that player turns out to be the Scum. Scathach, story and fubbs are almost in that category. Glee and Inner’s posts have been relatively fluffy, so we’re left with five active non-resurrected players to choose from.

I know I’m not Scum; I have strong Town reads on Lightfoot, Tanaer, and (probably) choie. This leaves me with Silver Jan to suspect by elimination.

I’m sure a lot of the game is going on behind the scenes. I have relatively few “penpals”; the one brief exchange I had with Silver Jan seemed suspicious to me. What do others think? My vote for Astral was intended more as a statement than a serious Lynch attempt. Let me make another statement:

Unvote; Vote: Silver Jan

Oh?

You built a case on me, supported it with evidence from the color, accused me of “slipping” from my scummy mcscummerson PM, impugned two other players with me, made a show of why you “picked” me instead of them, and told town you’d like to confirm, not test, this hypothesis by lynching me.

What statement were you trying to make beyond “we should lynch Astral Rejection,” and why are you now seriously backing away from your suggestion when it caught no traction?

I don’t think I’m backing away. I did not and do not expect you to be the Lynchee toDay.

I am frankly at a loss now. Visorslash and Suburban were each high on my suspect list; neither flipped Very Evil, nor did Normal Phase, of whom I was unsure. I still suspect scathach but, as I just noted, her participation is low enough that we might claim “moral victory” anyway if she ends up as surviving Scum.

Thus Silver Jan, based on pure hunch, and you for your scummy mcscummerson PM are my top two Lynch candidates right now. I’ll be happy to jump on whichever of these two bandwagons, if either, gains traction. Since you seem hurt that I unvoted you, let me remedy that:

Unvote; Vote: Astral Rejection

BTW, I’ve already PM’ed my role and action details to my Top Town suspect. But I do not see my Top Scum suspects eager to participate in the Reveal.

(PS. Regarding your suggestion in a previous Day that I give the Moderator a proxy for my EOD vote, I wonder if you recall making a snippish response to me when I made a not-too-dissimilar suggestion in a game you were moderating.)

I’m sorry I sniped at you in De’endee. I honestly don’t remember this incident. I’m also unclear on what point you’re trying to make by bringing that up.

Your suggestion that “I’m hurt” that you unvoted for me is pretty far off the mark, though. I just wanted to know what statement you were trying to make by voting me. You didn’t think I’d be lynched then, and I think you still don’t think I’ll be lynched now. I don’t think I’m your top scum target, so I’m really unclear on what your vote on me is supposed to accomplish.

I’m sorry I seem to be generally pissing you off this game.

If Silver Jan is scum, then she’s the best Mafia player I’ve ever come across in my admittedly not-very-expansive history. She’s the person I’ve had the most contact with throughout the game and I have trusted her with my role and, indeed, my life.

Of course the runner-up as far as my contacts are concered is Astral, so that probably doesn’t say much good about me to septimus. But Astral’s someone else who has had ample opportunity to off me, and he hasn’t, so I’ve gotta assume either both of them are saving me for some kind of hideously evil Demon sacrifice ceremony toward the end, or they’re Town as Town can be.

The problem with the “one scum left” idea as I see it is that it doesn’t make any sense as far as endgame–unless, again, pizza meant it in a good way. He did make this announcement after receiving the votes/actions and surely knew that Visorslash was for the chop. Which seems odd, because why would Phere destroy someone on his own side?

Okay, here’s my crackpot theory. What if, as I suggested, the game started out with one Very Evil traitor (Weedy), and a few Evil 3rd party types; not a traditional “scum team” but a coalition of the Evil. Maybe at first they didn’t even know each other existed – I think Normal made mention of that possibility in one of her posts which, naturally, I can’t find now.

But let’s say tacitly they formed an “alliance,” or as much of an alliance as you can get between four or five Evil, self-serving, greedy bastards. Maybe the minor Evil types ganged up and got control of Phere from Weedy, leading to her death? I like it even better if they didn’t find each other, but are somehow able to communicate anonymously through Phere, and eliminate candidates just as we are. With Weedy gone, we were left with three or four, say. For the hell of it I’ll assume it’s PetW, Visorslash, and player or players unknown.

So while we Townies are all chasing our tails, the real power struggle is within Phere himself. Visorslash’s death write-up said he was searching for the item that would give him ultimate power. Power over us? Power over Phere? Power over death itself? (These are often the motivations for villains: Voldemort, Sauron, Jadis, even whatsername in Tangled…) Whenever one of them has control of Phere, which I’m assuming might be a rotating role depending on who’s been killed (e.g. maybe once Weedy held Phere’s leash and was killed, PetW took over. Then Visorslash grabbed the reins from PetW and killed him. Now someone else is in charge of Phere. Is s/he the last? What else does this person need to win? Some item that can destroy all of us simultaneously? Or is it immortality / invulnerability that will result in this person’s wincon?

Okay, kinda long, but hey, as a writer I was getting into the story. Anyway, has anyone ever come across a game set-up like this? Where “scum” are actually separate 3rd party individuals who are battling both Town and each other for Ultimate Evil cred?

I know I’m dead. Sue me.

But I enjoyed reading the above post.

Welcome back, Gadarene. I missed you. Turkey, though. My #1 travel destination if I ever get the $.

Evil is evil. Visorslash was a threat to the town, and we’re down one more scum… even if it was scum we’d created.

I’m interested in the Silver Jan theory. As I’ve mentioned before, I promised myself to watch her if Weedy flipped scum because of the way they both appeared with similar mindsets on day1, within minutes of each other… as if they’d been chatting elsewhere. But Silver Jan has sounded very townie to me since. So, interested to see any case?

I’m already about as revealed as I can get, I think.

Re the revived - I’m curious about how they’ll flip if they do. In the meantime we should be evaluating them on their play since they’ve been back, especially if it differs. Having an established townie play style for a particular game to look over might provide good cover for a newly turned resurrect though :frowning: But I’d rather not lynch someone on spec at this point. And voting 3rd party seems worse - why vote for neutral when we’re looking for evil? (There may be a reason I haven’t thought of so that’s a serious question). I think non-participants are the best bet if we can’t raise some decent suspicions Today.

Loved your story, Choie. Interesting idea. I don’t think it actually matters whether it’s an established style as ATPG promised us something different and experimental. It fits very well with the story setup.

However, only Weedy has been revealed with all those ritual sigils etc on her. It may have been unrelated, but it also may have been part of the requirement. Ultimate power may well be the item that controls Phere.

Speaking of which, has anyone else wondered what the battle was that the king was inviting us here for?? I know it sounds traitorous but did he know what was going to happen? And if he did, in what way? Don’t strike me down but if the king himself was a threat to town, I want to know.

As far as I know, Guiri still has the one item that was in Weedy’s possession - the Blue Ring.

(eek! I totally spooked myself because “blue ring” was showing up red to me after posting, but the URL had kept my search highlight)

Oh great, I finally get a thumbs-up from Visorslash and it’s a) after he’s dead, and b) after he’s proven Evil! We livies don’t need kibbitzing from beyond the grave, buster. (But thanks.)

Thank you! And your Weedy comment made me just think of another idea that makes that part fit in. What if Phere is kinda like the One Ring, a corrupting influence on anyone who holds him? Like, the King may have started out as a good guy, but Phere saw something in him that made him vulnerable, and so he got a taste for Burger King, shall we say, chomping King Parma down and incorporating him into his, uh, essence. Or something. Perhaps Weedy was like Gollum, and had become so Very Evil that s/he became marked by it, or something like that? (Maybe King Theoden is a better analog.) Maybe if Visorslash or PetW or whoever had control of Phere next had lasted longer, he would’ve become Very Evil as well.

Maybe that’s why some people can choose a path of Evil in this game? They’re not born evil, but to totally rip off another fantasy novel, “it’s our choices, Harry, that make us who we are.” So someone who’s a normal Townie could try to take control of Phere, for good reasons, only to find himself or herself corrupted by the need for Ultimate Power?

In fact, OMG, maybe this explains why PetW didn’t have any reading. PetW presumably didn’t hold the reins very long (maybe we should double-check the amount of time between Weedy’s death and PetW’s), and was just changing over from Townie to Evil, but was still in this nebulous zone where no reading was possible?

(Holy crap I’m enjoying this. Migh’t not be true for this game, but fuck me if it wouldn’t make an interesting game in the future!)

I’m planning on also making a version of my chart that has Gadarene and GuiriEnEspana colored blue, because I have no reason to think they’re any less towny than I am.

But I’m taking a break from the chart for a while.

it’s past bed time for me. perhaps use a lighter shade of blue for them?

I’ll get back in game tomorrow I hope

***“These wretched chains are starting to annoy me. I am really going to enjoy destroying whoever they leave behind today…”

***-IC-

Firstly, apologies for not posting much.
Honestly, it has been difficult, as (rightly) I’m not allowed to use anything I learnt as my first incarnation (glee the Lawful Good Soldier) and I was then out of the game until I got reincarnated. (I haven’t had many PMs either…)

I am very puzzled by this.
If (for example) there is only one scum to find, how can anyone be sure Town will find that person?
If (on the other hand) Scum are about to win, the why does Askthepizzaguy suggest in another post that any side can still win?

Vote Black Bracer glee

I’m alive!!
Since one Black item saved my life, I’d like this replacement…

Vote Fubbleskag

  1. We need to form bandwagons to avoid the scum last-minute multivote.
  2. Fubbleskag claimed to be able to identify items, but nobody seems to have achieved that with him.

I don’t agree with** Septimus**'s vote on** Astral** and certainly not the one on me. I know for sure that I am Town and I’m 99% certain that** Astral** is Town.

Others that I think are Town are Choie,** LightFoot**,** Guiri**,** Gad** and maybe Septimus, oh, and** Inner**.** Tanaer **I haven’t a clue.

I am prepared to vote for any of the rest though. I have had a hectic couple of days so I will do a thorough re-read of who I think are the most scummy players.
