My point is that what happened there was a fluke. Most of the time, third party claims, town lynches them, they flip as third party/not pfk and town’s essentially mislynched. For once, I would like to not lynch the third party as a kneejerk reflex.
Yes, what happened there was a fluke. For one thing, in that game we had lynched the last Scum three Days before End Game, but we didn’t know that (it being a closed game). In this game, that won’t happen, because we know how many Scum there are. At least, I think we do…but I thought there were no Third Parties in this game too (though I’ll grant that a ‘surprise’ Third Party is much easier to swallow that a ‘surprise’ 5th Scum). But another reason that was a fluke is because it’s a bad idea to let players whose win condition does not match your own live long enough to be able to realize that win condition. It’s just too risky in most situations.
And here we get into one of the long-standing philosophical arguments we have in Mafia: “Is the lynch of a claimed Third Party a mislynch or not?”
One camp says it’s a ‘good lynch’ because a 3rd Party is ‘not Town’. The other says it’s a ‘misynch’ because a 3rd Party is ‘not Scum’.
I fall into the former camp, and it appears you are in the latter. And I’m pretty sure neither of us is going to change our opinion on this topic Today.
The non-hypocrite in me generally agrees with Suburban.
But the guy in me who would like to keep playing really like the points this Stickler guy is making…
It’s not a philosophical argument at all. The former camp just refuses to do the math.
D1: 14 town, 4 scum, 1 3rd. Town needs to eliminate 4 players (= 4 scum); scum needs to eliminate 11 players (= 14 town - 4 scum + 1 3rd). Town advantage +3 (= 11 - 4*2).
No one was lynched and no one died in the night.
D2: 14 town, 4 scum, 1 3rd. Town 4, scum 11 (14-4+1). Town advantage +3.
With mislynch of town: town 4, scum 10 (13-4+1). Town advantage +2.
Successful NK.
D3: 12 town, 4 scum, 1 3rd. Town 4, scum 9 (12-4+1). Town advantage +1.
With mislynch of town: town 4, scum 8 (11-4+1). Town advantage 0.
Successful NK.
D4: 10 town, 4 scum, 1 3rd. Town 4, scum 7 (10-4+1). Town advantage -1.
Lynching TP Hal: 10 Town, 4 scum. Town 4, scum 6 (10-4). Town advantage -2.
Lynching Town Kelly: 9 town, 4 scum, 1 3rd. Town 4, Scum 6 (9-4+1). Town advantage -2.
Lynching Scum Kelly: 10 town, 3 scum, 1 3rd. Town 3, Scum 8(10-3+1). Town advantage +2.
NETA: Players can’t do these calculations in closed setups, naturally and if it’s revealed that the groups break down in some way other than 14-4-1, obviously all the math changes. This isn’t meant to say that we have all the information on the setup, but based on what has been reported, this is what the math says.
i’m not prepared to lynch Hal toDay because of his claim. it can be evaluated based on his actions in the next Night and Day. currently there’s only one viable choice left.
Vote KellyCriterion
How will we evaluate **Hal’s **claim? What is he going to be able to do over the next Night/Day that will demonstrate a) that he’s not Scum, and b) that he’s not a PFK?
Day Four, Dusk
*He could have fought them, the pirate reckoned.
Probably he’d have even won. He was a murderer - that his kills were made for gain rather than for pleasure bought him no quarter on that account - and they were a collection of cooks, servants, and clergy. The knight could have beaten him, maybe, but the knight was gone. And those that had proved capable of killing could do so only under cover of night. He could have slaughtered them, one at a time or in bunches, then made his way south and found a safe ship and a friendly wind to carry him away again.
But he sought Canterbury to leave the days of killing behind; perhaps this was meant to be his penance. And so his blade, and his tongue, remained silent and still until the moment that the rest of him did, too.*
KellyCriterion, THE SHIPMAN, who was Town, has been lynched. His power has not been used.
Night Four begins now. It will end tomorrow, Saturday, July 28, around 5:00PM EST (in order to get us back on track with the Day-Night cycle). If anyone with Night actions strongly objects to this shortened Night, please let me know by PM as soon as possible.
Thanks!
Well, foo. Sorry Kelly.
On the plus side, he died without using his power so now I can use it. Which means I get…a nightkill. :smack:
By the by, I’m tired of searching around the thread for important points, so I’m linking them in my profile. If there’s anything anyone wants in there, let me know.
If you are serious about rooting for town, use a kill on RyJae please. We are very close to lynch or lose, maybe not mathematically but definitely dejour, especially considering the lack of cooperation wrt voting. Only way to nail scum is to take matters into your own hands.

I have to say, I’m surprised at Kelly’s power and the lack of its use.
Granted, he hasn’t participated in this thread now for over a week, but from the begining, the only person he’s consistently voted for was Tengu. Yet he didn’t bother acting on those suspicions by shooting a PM to Story, which would have taken about 5 seconds to do. Weird.
Kelly was phoning it in from the beginning.
In this day and age, that could literally be true. ![]()
if he kills using his power that says has different color, if he takes out scum or if he doesn’t.
Kelly’s flipping town is making me revisit my earlier theory that scum are mostly experienced players and have played with each other in the past.
Just noticed the error – glad story said “tomorrow”, or this’d be the longest night ever!
So, do I get to wake up in the Morning?
Day Five, Dawn
*And the Narrator didst check and check again, and he didst scratch his pate with great vexation and wonderment. He considered the simplicity of the game, the seeming impossibility of the precise sequence of events that did lead him unto this place and time.
And then did he remind himself again that no Mafia setup ever truly survives contact with actual players.
No one died in the Night. Chew on that for a while, folks.*
Day Five starts here, and will end on Thursday, July 26 (a day before the Olympics! I’m so psyched for the Olympics!) between 1 and 5 PM EST.
To get this out there now, I made an (obviously) unsuccessful move last night:
I made it clear yesterDay that I thought he was scummy – as it turns out, probably a little too clear.
GG guys.
Sorry for my low participation. I need to be more careful signing up to these things in future, given I clearly couldn’t/wouldn’t make sufficient time for it.
Good luck town.
