Mafia: The Thrill of the Chase [Newbie Friendly!]

OMG. It could be that I’m still low on brain cells due to lack of sleep, but it’s cracking me up that again Svejk is basing a case on someone primarily due to that suspect’s behavior towards him. Is this the Mafia game’s equivalent of Narcissistic Perosnality Disorder?

That said, yeah, fubbleskag’s behavior this whole game has been freaky. Unvoting/voting for septimus, voting to abstain, voting himself… plus, I think his last post complimenting / snuggling Svejk (not sure which it is, same as fluiddruid) is the longest thing he’s posted in the entire game. And where are all the smilies?

Thank you for comments, I think you make a bunch of good points. As for Ed, I do think that I’ve grown less suspicious of him and that there was more OMGUS in my vote than I realized at the time.

Bolding mine. At the risk of seeming defensive once more (and if it is up to me I’ll never say anything else about this ever) but that is not true, it was not my motivation for staying away, and I never said it was. I don’t think that I could have drawn a whole lot more fire than I was drawing at the time anyway.

alright, this is just getting ridiculous. it seems that no matter what I do or say I’m suspicious to someone for it, so I’m going to just reveal my role:

this is quite possibly the worst possible role for me personally, if you think about it. I’m horrible as town, and the only real threat to me with this role is a mis-lynch or hiding behind the wrong person. what I really need as town is some protection from a mis-lynch if I’m ever going to see EOG.

random questions I don’t have the time to research answers for right now:

  • if **gnarly **was a bussing, who stands to have gained the most town cred for it?
  • could the entire Svejk / ed thing have been an act? now that they’re both softening up on their suspicion of each other, does that lead any of us to lend them more town credit?
  • is there anything to my earlier random thought about scum purposely pushing tie votes?

NETA:

  • am I over-reacting in thinking that Silver Jan’s suspicions / votes are pretty weak straw-grasping? could she be latching on to the smallest detail in order to hide in plain sight and/or dogpile on an already suspected townie?

No prob, and thanks for being good-natured about this.

Heh, that much is true. But I’m looking at your comment, “I felt there was not a lot I could contribute to my own defence that I had not already said in post #595, and was uncertain how to avoid my own lynching which contributed to 1).” Not posting because you felt you couldn’t say anything to avoid your own lynching is basically the equivalent of not posting because you don’t want to be lynched. At least I think it’s a reasonable interpretation of it.

I might add that this is a very normal way to behave, especially as a newbie, so you don’t have to feel that insulted by our interpreting it that way. I did the exact same thing in De’endee; I felt I was screwing up and was worried that people were misunderstanding me, and that I should just be quiet and lurk for a while so I didn’t make any more mistakes that could cost Town another Townie (me).

fubbleskag, what the hell? (Does anyone else feel like we’re always saying that to fubbleskag’s posts?) It’s still Night and we’re days away from any future lynching, why on earth would you reveal now?

Plus that’s a particularly bizarre role, IMHO. It’s so damn detrimental to Town–if this alleged Town Ho fubbles hides behind a Townie, it means we lose two on our side. Crazy!

I am so with you on this one, I voted for Fubbles yesterday and I think it was a reasonable vote. What he is writing now just makes him look more scummy, what, with the snuggling and all!

The only reason I think you could be Town is your whacked vote on me on D1, would scum do that? Of course they would lol, Scum will do anything to win. As a new player, I don’t think you would have taken a chance like that. I am known for doing OMGUS votes and usually I am right (check the Naruto game when I was a Vig)

Damn, we were cross posting again. I’m not hiding nor am I ready to dogpile. If you thought that then look at my vote yesterday which was for you, I didn’t even try and break a tie which is what **Hirka **wanted me to do.

If I am ever a Mod again, there will be no posting of role PM’s, what a load of crock, why not all post on D1 and not play the game grrrr…

SilverJan, choie, what do you guys think of MentalGuy?

I really don’t know what to think about him but… he had a really good post about Fubbles and yet he didn’t vote for him. I still think that Fubbles is scum and after your question** Guiri**, perhaps they are scum together.

What hasn’t come up in this game are Masons? Could there be any and if so wouldn’t be a good time to say so?

I think you’re misreading the role. The person I hide behind doesn’t get killed instead of me if I am targeted.I get killed along with them if they are targeted, otherwise I’m safe from night kills.

Do you not see the self contradiction here?

Fubbles, there’s a dead bodyguard and a claimed Doc, how do you see your role fitting in with those? Do you only hide at Night or does your hiding last for a full cycle?

Whatever happened to your suspicions of choie?

On MentalGuy…

Bolding added, this is the post that caught my attention. The wording seems clumsy. Then he asked Svejk what made Scathach more scummy than Mental himself, given that Svejk’s lurker case could equally apply to Mental. Without waiting for an answer, he proceeded to vote Scathach.

Then this post was interesting:

Expected bandwagon? There were just three players who mentioned an intention to vote Svejk: Astral (Night killed), Special Ed (who voted shortly after Dawn) and Mental Guy:

MentalGuy had a role in encouraging the cases away from Svejk. During the Day, after Svejk had picked up votes from Special Ed and Hirka, he changed his mind but remained supportive of others who wanted to lynch Svejk, even if it was a mislynch, as we’d gain information:

And the reasons (snipped from above):

His vote change is scummy, his vote change is Townie - now it’s a null tell but he was prepared to vote based on this during N2.
Astral’s death makes him scum, Astral’s death makes him Townie - null tell, it’s WIFOM.
His drop in participation is scummy - all the more reason to suspect him, no?

I don’t understand what you’re asking me here. I’ve never run into this role before personally. from what I read on the mafia wiki, I’m supposed to claim cop so that scum waste a night kill on me? we’ve already seen a dead cop, and the general consensus in the previous games I’ve played here is to lynch all liars, regardless of alignment, so I’m not sure the mafia wiki’s suggested approach would have worked here in any case.

bolding mine. I’ve interpreted it literally, as if this protection is only from potential night actions like vig/sk/scum night kills; I’ve received nothing from the moderator to indicate otherwise.

also, each and every single one of you is now officially a lean scum for me. this morning while I was trying to read/review, my wife finally asked me what the hell I was doing that was so important that she had walked in and out of the office not once, not twice, but three times completely naked and I didn’t even notice. let the hostility begin.

Guiri I’m not sure what I think about Mental Guy. I think he’s been quite wishy-washy but to be honest, I remember him playing exactly the same way in our last game, and I believe he was Town, so… The hedging-his-bets thing and vagueness seem to be part of his regular play style. Which basically means I know fuck all.

I thought that’s what I said. If you hide behind a townie who’s targetted (and presumably the only people who are targetted are townies – unless we have a vig, which is by no mean certain), that means the townie’s dead, and you’re dead, which means two dead townies. Assuming you’re Town, that is.

So that role seems all kinds of unfair for Town.

Or if that’s not what you’re saying, what are you saying?

Guiri, what are your thoughts on Silver Jan and fubbles? It’s time to put the DA in the witness stand for a while.

Between the abstain, the attack on Mahaloth, the handshake attempt, the smilies, the evasiveness, voting the doc, the self-vote with its strained logic, and the claim, I suspect Fubbles has been trying to attract votes rather than a Night kill. 3rd party survivor? Jester? He’s probably the crazy role referred to by Trepa. I don’t think it’s very likely that he’s scum though.

His self-vote yesterDay reminded me of my first mafia game, Screamers. Tiltawhirl was a (scum) hider and had selected AllWalker to hide behind. AllWalker was the lynch leader and Tilta knew that if he was lynched, she’d die too, so she tried to force her own lynch. In the end AllWalker was lynched (but survived!) and Tilta died. Trepa, the moderator, described her role as “A hider is a role that can hide behind another character to avoid kills. If they’re hiding, and they’re attacked, they won’t die. But if the person they’re hiding behind dies, they die too.”, no mention of the lynch but it applied.

But that would mean fubbles was hiding behind Mahaloth, who he was voting, or Svejk, who had attracted plenty of attention after his D2 vote switch and would have been the worst player to hide behind. It would certainly explain his willingness to be lynched to “save” Svejk or Mahaloth.

“what I really need as town is some protection from a mis-lynch if I’m ever going to see EOG.” - why say this? Why EOG?

I believe he’s a hider. Trepa’s comment in the role PM makes sense when matched with Fubbles’ sign-up post.

I’m trying to think if there’s some way to test Septimus and Fubbles’ claims with the help of the Vig/SK.

I suspect SilverJan is scum but I’m not ready to make a case.

I don’t know why you claimed at all but yeah, if you’re Town, you could have dropped hints that you were a power role, not specifically a cop, to attract a scum Night kill.

Your vote on Septimus makes sense given your claimed role but you haven’t mentioned it as a reason for re-voting. In fact you went back and forth on Septimus’ claim, wondering if scum were trying to get us to mislynch a doc, and then asked him to vote you in order to save Svejk? Don’t 3 town protective roles seem like quite a lot?
