The Day seemed to be going as so many others, there was little to go on, and precious little new information for leads on the Cultists. Even worse, all discussion came to a stand still, as the shocked citizenry heard the news from one of their most vocal leaders, sachetorte. He stood in front of the masses and, with an unusual jitter in his voice, professed that he’d received word that his great aunt Bertha had contracted Sekhamite Yellow Fever, a rare disease from the ancient Western lands of Sekham which results in pustule boils on the eyes and lips, resulting in blindness, inflamation of the tongue and tonsiles, resulting in an inability to speak, rapid visceral dissolution, and for its namesake, a pale yellow hue to the skin. Though a case hadn’t been heard of in centuries, it is said it is an extremely torturous death, but mercifully short, often only taking a few days from diagnosis. From thence, he left in haste.
But then, as the crowd recovered its wherewithal, the rabble returned to its previous fervor. Many fingers pointed at individuals who had had suspicion on them for Days, meanwhile a few others previously unnoticed began to gain steam. In the end, it was the quiet reclusive woman fluiddruid who was selected to take a swim.
As she was shackled, she had precious few words: “We are going about this the wrong way.” Her head hanged low, with slow deliberate steps, as she was led up to the the rim of the sacred waters. She raised her eyes upon the town one last time, barely holding back her tears with a wry forced smile, before she closed them for the last time before she was shoved into the pool.
She gasped for air, but even that was not enough, as her body slowly sank beneath the water and came to rest in a strange stillness upon the bottom as her breath finally gave away.
The rabble came to a stunned silence as she was pulled from the water. With no family it seemed, her last rites were simple, and her body was placed on fragile raft set upon the barely flowing waters of the river. Perhaps she too will rejoin the sea in time.
