Due to real life sadly interfering with roleplaying, there is a vacancy to take over the Magic User character in my adventure.
Please read the details below, then either e-mail or PM me.
Hereis the setup thread, which gives the details of the adventure (set in Merrie England).
The main points are:
It is a 1st edition D&D game, with the background of rural England. So elves, magic weapons and dragons will mingle with church spires, pubs and village greens… (but there will be no cricket! )
There will be as much roleplaying as combat. Player characters will have both weapon skills and non-weapon proficiencies. Character histories are going to be helpful.
There will be no dice (and no weapon v armour adjustment tables).
All monsters will come from the Monster Manual. The character races and classes will be largely based on the Players handbook, but with a couple of extra ones.
Players don’t need any experience. However those who know 1st edition D&D, Tolkien books and rural England will spot familiar references and can help newbies with suggestions and advice. This is a team effort!
The party will be based around Lawful and Good (i.e. no Evil or Chaotic Neutral characters).
And here is the adventure so far.
You will takeover the Magic User Salazar and receive full details of the character’s abilities and previous history from me.
Anyway, if no volunteer steps forward befoe this sinks off the front page, we’ll just have Salazar ‘rest’ and the party can continue without him.
(If ArrMatey! comes back, he’s welcome to continue playing Salazar…)
I’m not desperate (because I can balance the opposition easily enough
However you sound like the sort of chap who would make a real contribution.
Let me send you the character files and then you can make an informed decision.
(The game is designed to cope with both experienced players and newbies.)
N.B. Since you are an experienced player, I can offer you a ‘part-time’ alternative:
Paladud, who plays Gawain the Paladin, is tied up at present. I’m playing the character myself, but it is more appropriate that a player controls him. Would you like to be a temporary Paladin?
I’ll send him over too.
(I don’t know when Paladud will come back…)
I thought he was my first alternate? So doesn’t that technically mean I had first dibs on him? (Of course, thankfully we seem to be lucky in the first game so far, so I am just teasing.)
BTW: 1977 with the original D&D 3 book set is where I began. Right around the time the Xerox Hobbit special came out. I read the Hobbit in September then the LotR & Silmarillion. I started playing in late September or early October of 1977.
I have noticed a surprising percentage of the English dopers are games. What is up with that? Was it actually more popular there than here where it started? I could see that as most of the best Fantasy writers were from the UK or at least wrote about England. You haven’t slacked off since then either with both Pratchett and Rowling selling unbelievable numbers of books.
Actually I think Vikings! may need him more than my game, but my players did ask me to try to keep Salazar going…
I saw a description of roleplaying in a computer magazine in 1979. I got the Blue Book (descriptions of characters up to 3rd level and a sample dungeon) and ran a dungeon using only that!
I don’t know if the sample is biased - you could argue that gamers are more likely to be attracted to the Dope.
I think the English like to try things - we play football, rugby (2 types), cricket, hockey, athletics, tennis, golf, table tennis etc.
There are quite a lot of chess and bridge players too.
When it rains a lot in your country, the attractions of table-top gaming is increased.
