Sorry - That Magic Rubber comment was not said by TwistofFate. It just seems that way. I must admit that in the past I have put words in people’s mouths by misusing the quotes but I no longer do that on purpose.
I gave up trying to get my wife to cut all of her hair off, because whenever I would broach the subject, she would look at me like I just grew a third eye or something. Oh well…
Based on my own experiences and those of other women I have spoken with, the easiest and most effective way for a woman to make other people assume that she is a lesbian (short of wearing a sign) is to cut her hair very short. One lesbian friend tells me that when she had long hair she had to tell people she was a lesbian, but ever since she cut it off people “just know”. Another straight friend cut all her hair off right before coming to college and ended up spending the whole year having to swear up and down that she was really straight.
I’d have to say all of it.
I know of no “feminine” women with short hair. None.
They think they are “pixies”. Sorry. They become matrons instantly.
Wow! Interesting question. I’d not given it all that much thought.
To me, unless the hair is ‘jock’ short like in GI Jane, which I do not find appealing on men nor women, it depends on several factors.
- The face.
- The hair style and color
- The body, including height and weight.
I’ve seen many attractive women with the ‘Prince Valiant’ or ‘Flapper’ type pageboy. Melanie Griffith wore one in a movie, the name I can’t recall and it was black and she looked great! Steaming!
I loved Cyndi Laupers’ trademark short, fluffed hair.
I liked that picture Diane showed on her site of her ‘big hair’ and have enjoyed similar styles seen on many women.
Crystal Gayle, the country singer, had long straight hair that, while interesting, I found a bit too long. It came down below her buttocks.
I liked the long shag of the 60s - 70s and the ‘Fara Style.’
Some punk rock chicks I met had this longish, fluffy, spiky style that I thought sizzled, especially those with a crest.
I like’d Stevie Nicks with her long style when she was with the band. I liked Stevie Nicks when she wasn’t with the band.
I’ve not liked the medium length pageboy on tall skinny girls because it makes them look like boys and I’ve come across tiny, thin girls with long, luxurious dark hair that just did not look right. (I found most of them in the Kentucky regions.)
I do not like real short cuts on large women because it makes them look mannish.
The first woman android that Harrison Ford in Blade Runner ‘tested’ for her builders had a remarkably pretty face which her ‘helmet’ like hair style enhanced beautifully. (Her 40s style cloths sucked big time.)
Short or long hair, it depends on the woman’s face. The office girls in ‘Working Girl’ with Melanie Griffith all had crappy ‘big’ hair. Fran Drescher in ‘the Nanny,’ with her build, to me, doesn’t look good with her normal ‘big hair’ but looks ravishing with her styled pageboy wig or when she wears her hair in a medium, feathered cut.
Now various short and long lengths look great on oriental women, but ‘modern’ curled and styled medium cuts, to me, don’t. For me, the proper hair style ads greatly to sex appeal. I don’t even mind wigs. I knew a lady once who liked wearing wigs and she looked wonderful in any of her many ‘aspects’ ranging from a blue ‘fright’ wig to a shoulder length, commercial straight banged bob.
I believe in ancient times it would have been more manly to have shorter hair, because the soldiers wore it short so enemies couldn’t grab it. And soldiers are usually considered manly.
And I’ll go with Serendipity on the hair thing; it just depends. (But really long isn’t usually too good.)
I keep changing my mind.
I think boyish short cuts on women are devastatingly sexy! I perk up when I spy a woman somewhere with hair like that.
But in the last five years or so, long long hair has become fashionable again, and wowsers it can sure make a girly look niiiiice…

Native Americans have long hair in most old photographs I’ve seen though. Other ethnic peoples seem never to cut their hair. I can imagine that a long plait could be turned into a lethal weapon if it was weighted with something heavy. Would that work do you think?
