Man drove truck into, shot up, set church on fire (Sept 28, 2025, Grand Blanc, MI)

This is purely a proud sister brag, but my sister-in-law is a firefighter and EMT. It takes a special kind of person. As long as I’ve known her (since she was 12) she’s been an irrefutable badass, undaunted by pretty much anything. When the hurricane swept through in the St. Pete area last year I have a picture of her up to her thighs in water trying to get to the fires. When I asked her how she was holding up in the middle of such crisis, she said, “I secretly love it." Definitely pay these people more. There are only a few of them.

That’s not so bad, it’s when people are on the toilet & push & strain too hard & vaso down & pass out. They’re always between the toilet & the wall (so hard to get around them) with their pants around their ankles; at least you’re clean in the shower.

Thighs? I’m over 6’ & have been up to my chest… & that’s with some rock or root under my toe to give me an extra 2-3" which I was balancing on because I was in deep enough that my PFD was trying to float me away. Hard to hold an inflatable boat against a door when you’re floating away in the current.

Yes, EMS makes way too little given their job is to save your life!

I keep mine by the fish tank, like a normal person.

(Actually, like you, I have them for a hobby, so they’re with my other fish tank stuff).

I haven’t read the entire thread, but some Mormons, including members of the affected congregation, have sponsored a fundraiser for the shooter and his family. It reminds me of the “Amish Grace” story from the 00s, where a man killed some Amish children and their teacher, and the community rallied around his own widow and child(ren).

This is my online pastor, talking about it.

I’ve recently started listening to that gentleman and while I do not always agree with him I do find listening to him worthwhile.

I don’t have time this morning to watch this video and I don’t know the details of either story, but it is a real possibility that the spouse/significant other didn’t know and certainly the children aren’t responsible. Yet the families of shooters often suffer themselves due to the loss of a family breadwinner or through being ostracized for a crime that wasn’t theirs. Supporting the innocent family of a shooter, who are also victims if not in the same manner or degree, is kind and generous in the abstract.

But, as I said, I don’t know the details here.

Agreed with compassion toward the assailant’s innocent family, but not if an adult – wife, father, etc. – knew the person was throwing up red flags and still allowed that person access to guns. Of course, sometimes red flag ignorers are a shooter’s first victim, as in Sandy Hook.

Here’s a story in the Detroit Free Press about the guy who started the fundraiser for the shooter’s family, as well as the family itself. I’ll admit, a tear may have left my eye while reading it. It’s hard to find goodness in the world today, so when I read about the people affected by this tragedy, well, it’s a reminder there are humans behind the headlines, and still good humans all around us.

The FBI said today their investigation showed this attack was anti-religious. I think it partially stemmed from that but also from the arsonist/murderer/terrorist lacking coping skills for anger control and thirdly his being able to readily get arms and explosives. The problems were at least three-pronged with even more to it. I understand the feds had to keep it simple for PR of course but I hope not to lose the complexity either.
