Man of Steel is going to rock your freaking socks off

Judging by that scene (it looked to be a sea oil well to me), it was fairly early, before he actually becomes Superman. It’s entirely possible he’d never actually used his strength to that level, or didn’t know his full abilities. Plus, he does have to strain to really use his full super strength against most enemies.

Hmmm, how long has Wolverine been around? Surely it is written, Variety is the spice of life.

Actually, I prefer it if Superman’s powers have some limits, you know? Let him be strong, but not crystal-continent-lifting strong.

And there’s a reason I think Captain America had the best of the solo Avengers movies..

Hi, I’m the 80’s, 90’s and 00’s - we three decades were filled with progressively grimmer and grittier superheroes. You may not have heard of us.

In other words : probably shouldn’t talk about what you don’t know beans about.

We have. And we have twenty years left!

Theoretically. But it bogged down a lot in the third act and sadly wasn’t as committed as it could have been to the vintage feel. I still quite enjoyed it though. (I want to see more historical comic book movies. Please to have blaxploitation Power Man and Iron Fist movie?)

Also, in the great movie tradition, I like how Lois Lane, saucy reporter, gets to interview the super human alien, probably first. There are military, police, scientists, ect. but -

“Let me talk to him. I think I understand him.”

“Alright, Miss Lane. You were smart enough to worm your way into this top secret area, so we’ll let you take first crack at him.”

Not hardly. The social relevance and melodrama stuff started creeping in with Marvel’s superhero launch in the 60’s, and had basically taken hold of everything by the late 70’s. We’re way overdue for a correction.

As long as there are more comic readers over the age of 21 than under, comics will not be going back to the golden age. Kids just aren’t their demo.

Don’t mind that grinding sound. It’s just the goalposts moving.

The only goalposts that matter are the ones marked “Good” and “Movie.”

If Superman delivers a hero you can cheer for, a villain you can really despise, a love interest you can believe (Amy Adams is a slam dunk there) and a story that, within the logic of its own universe, is coherent and compelling, the movie will succeed, and it will be enjoyable to watch. Whether they go with Silver Age or Platinum Age or Polyester Age comic book sensibilities is something that doesn’t matter in terms of how good the movie will actually be, and won’t matter to 97% of the people who go see it.

Well said. I’m still standing by my earlier arguments that Superman has mostly sucked, though. It’s easy to always be idealistic and noble and virtuous when there’s no consequence for him to choose otherwise. He’s never actually had to make a decision before.

Nope. Just pointing out your bad assumption that the fifty years prior to the time frame I mentioned were wholly the domain of the idealists. There’s a transition period.

Just save Darkseid for the Justice League.

It is unfortunate that the name ‘Brainiac’ has been used as a childish taunt for decades now as that he is probably my favorite villain.

Some parts look interesting, but man, this looks self-important.

I’m going to predict a thumbs-down. *Avengers *succeeded because it had solid acting, good effects, and Whedonesque charm, even with its high-concept elements. The first two Batman films succeeded for similiar reasons–solid, veteran actors, visionary direction, and damned interesting stories at the core. I’m not seeing a bit of that here. Even in the trailers, Crowe and Costner look like they’re phoning it in, the story looks like a high-concept pastiche, and Zack Snyder…well, shoot, if you did like 300, you probably will like this. I’m staying home unless my girlfriend really wants to see it.

While O’Deadly IS a wonderful villain, I just wish he wasn’t the one in the first JL movie. Of course, the way DC movies go, there’s every chance there won’t be a second. I may be the only person in the universe who’d like to see 'em take on Starro on the big screen (or The Key, or Prof. Ivo, or Dr. Destiny)

WB/DC would be wise to get Darkseid on film before Thanos is the main villain for an Avengers sequel – which may well not be until the third movie.

Thanos will be appearing in the Guardians of the Galaxy, and will (as far as I can tell) be the villain in Avengers 2. So, yes, I agree, either beat Marvel to the punch with JL vs Darkseid, or pick a different villain.
