Dear Manhatten, Is there a problem with the questions that I ask? Do you really have a problem with my curiosity? Am I really showing fellow people disrespect by asking a simple question that I do not know the answer to? I simply do not see the logic in why you were angry at me. Maybe you are the one who is showing disrespect? Im sorry for not knowing everything in the universe but I am human, and humans aren’t the smartest things in the universe you know. So Im sorry for upsetting you by asking a simple question… I truly am…
Blitzzen, what makes you think that manhattan has a problem with you? Has he moved a couple of threads or something? If so, that doesn’t mean that there’s a problem with you, or with the threads you’re starting, it just means that you’re starting them in the wrong place. Read over the forum descriptions to figure out where to post things, and you’ll be OK. If you can’t figure out where something should go, you can ask over in the About This Message Board forum, or e-mail someone from the board, and get advice on it.
You’re new here, and newbies make mistakes. That’s understood here, and if you correct them, they’ll quickly be forgotten, and you’ll fit in just fine.
Unfortunately you missed out on the lecture that Manhattan gave to me about “Disrespect.” I took it personally becasue what he wrote was disrespectful itself. The thread was called I think, THE ULTIMATE QUESTION PART II. Read it for yourself if youd like…
On a fan site dedicated to Cecil Adams, it is generally considered bad form to be ignorant of the questions Cecil has already answered. Learn to use the archives search, then, if you have further questions, you can ask them over in Comments on Cecil’s Columns. Good luck.
Blitzzen, let me try to explain. Your first “ultimate” question drew a rapid response referring you to one of Cecil’s columns. Fair enough if you are new and didn’t search for it. However, since someone posted a link to it in response to your question you should read what has been provided lest you ask a second question which is also answered in that same article.
In any case there was no need to open a second thread - you could have just hit reply on the original.
Try also to make the thread title indicative of the topic - “Rock Falling Through Earth??” would have been easier. That way people don’t have to open it to see what it is about.
Possibly Manny was a little peeved also by your misuse of the word “ultimate”. It’s a bit like that movie The Last Seduction II. After the ultimate question, there are no more questions, which would mean Manny is out of a gig.

Ahh, yes, that.
ULTIMATE QUESTION PART II
What happened there is that you asked a question, and were provided with a link to an authoritative answer to that question. You then asked another question also answered at that same link. While this is not exactly the best form of follow-up question, I wouldn’t exactly call it disrespectful. Manhattan can come off as a bit abrasive at times, but it’s just because his job here can get a bit stressful, dealing with mistakes all of the time. He probably wasn’t really blowing up at you, but at all of the countless posters who asked a question to which they could have found the answer on their own. If he were really mad at you, trust me, you’d know it: He wouldn’t just lecture you about it; you’d probably get an e-mail from him, and if it was really bad, from an administrator as well, warning you. Since I presume that it hasn’t come to that, you shouldn’t worry too much… But do try to do better, k?
I’ve edited this post to fix the link. – CKDextHavn

Why start a thread about this ? What’s wrong with just mailing him and asking ? All your questions in the OP are directed to him and not us .
Why make a public issue out of it ?
Unless you wanted to complain aswell , in which case this should have been posted in the BBQ pit
Oh well enough of my rambling . All the other replies have covered the issue quite well enough .
So, Blitzzen…when are you gonna ask that question about an infinite number of monkeys with an infinite number of typewriters…?
manny manny people ask me this and I wonder…
Blitzzen, if you have a gripe, go to the Pit, if you want to share, MPSIMS, a question about the board, ATMB, if you want to poll the SDMB on something, IMHO is the place.
This is for General Questions, pretty self explainatory, ditto Great Debates.
Its not that hard to read the first page.
BTW it’s Manhattan
Who’s manhattan?
No, no, Uncle B, it’s WHERE’S Manhattan.
… somewhere east of New Jersey.
No, no, no! It’s WHAT’s a Manhattan?
1 1/2 oz. Whiskey or Bourbon,
3.4 oz. Sweet Vermouth,
Dash of Bitters (if desired)
Build in a rocks glass or stir over ice & strain into a chilled cocktail glass to serve up. Garnish with a cherry.
Actually, it’s a research project - Manhattan’s da bomb!
In 1621 the Dutch started a West India Company, which established the province of New Netherland in 1624. The first colonists were 30 families of Walloons, descendants of Protestant refugees from Belgium. More than half of the families traveled northward along the Hudson and built Fort Orange on a site now embraced within the city of Albany. Other families established a trading post, New Amsterdam, on the southern tip of Manhattan Island. A few settled on Long Island. Peter Minuit became director general of the colony in 1626. He bought permission from the Manhattan tribe of the Wappinger Confederacy to occupy Manhattan Island and built a fort on the site later called the Battery. He paid for this in trinkets worth about 24 dollars. The Indians thought that they were only granting permission to share the land, not giving up possession of it.
I think he prefers “irascible.”
Doc! What kind of manhattens are you drinking?
3.4 ounces of Sweet Vermouth? Aaack!
aenea
You know you’re right. It should be 3/4 oz Sweet Vermouth.
Do you think that might be why no one has ever ordered a second Manhattan from me.
The other contributors to this thread have pretty much nailed why I was a little peeved,
By posting the question you did, you indicated that a) you had not read the answer provided for you in the other thread and b) you did not take the hint that Cecil Adams has written on a variety of subjects and that a quick search of the archives is the polite thing to do before taking a slot on the first page of this forum.
It’s not a particularly big deal as long as you learn from this. Doing it over and over would not be a good idea.
And it’s probably worth adding that this thread does not belong in this forum. Let me know if it’s OK to close it, otherwise I’ll move it to the Pit for you.
Oh, and I prefer “cantankerous.”
Hey, UncaBeer! Leave the Dutch out of it. We did nothing wrong to your country.
[sup]Well OK, maybe a little. But we meant well [/sup]
