Massachusetts Governor Campaign Ads

The campaign season is upon us, and we are beseiged by TV ads for the governor. This has brought two noteworthy ads:
1.) Independent Christy Mihos has come up with an animated ad in which an animated version of him asks first a Bechtel and Parsons engineer and then a set of Massachusetts legislators howcum the Big Dig is $6 billion over budget. The animated askees promptly and literally put their heads up their asses. Entertaining ad, especially when we try to explain it to nine-year-old MilliCal. Mihos swore these ads wouldn’t appear earlier than 10 PM. In something that might portend ill for his prospective governorship, this hasn’t been at all true – they put this one on during the early evening news all the time. I’m not complaining – political ads is where the Young are supposed to learn earthy expressions, aren’t they?

2.) Republican Kerry Healey first caught a lot of flak for airing an ad full of Democrats praising her efforts in passing a bill. The Dems say they’re being taken out of context and that the ad implies that they support her rather than the Democratic candidate, when what they were speaking at was su[pposed to be a bipartisan event.

She followed this up with an ad that starts in an evil, minor key and rain-filled vistas talking about the Bad Old Days of One-Party Rule in Massachusetts, but it all brightens up as soon as Mitt Romney and Healey appear on the scene. Sunshine and bright music. They made it all better.

Except…Romnery was preceded by Jane Swift, and by Paul Cellucci, and by Bill Weld. Massachusetts hasn’t had a Democrat as governor since Michael Dukakis 15 years ago. And it’s pretty clear the ad isn’t talking about the ancient evils of Dukakis, so what “one party rule” are they decrying?

3.) Deval Patrick’s ads all feature him sitting in a chair talking to someone off-camera. There’s nothing wrong with them, except that they’re dull. They need a talking duck or something.
