The [roblem with “How would you cast this?” questions - and it’s fun and all, I’m just pointing something out - is that they always end up being a case of “Who do I think LOOKS the part among actors who’ve recently been successful?”
When they cast “X-Men,” two people were actually cast in the roles a lot of people had theoretically placed them in - Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, and Halle Berry as Storm. The former worked out; the latter is generally not considered to be a great fit, although the part’s been underwritten. (A lot of folks would have picked Kelsey Grammer for the Beast, too, I guess.)
But who would EVER have thought of Hugh Jackman to play Wolverine? Nobody, that’s who. Jackman was essentially unknown outside of Australia and wouldn’t have been a common pick there, either. But he is, by far, the best-cast role in the X-Men series, because the casting people knew what they were doing. I also doubt too many people would have thought “Famke Janssen” when casting Jean Grey, but that was a great choice, as it turned out.
Similarly, nobody knew Christopher Reeve before “Superman,” but he was perfect. Few would have picked Tobey Maguire as Spider-man, but that was some brilliant casting.
If a new Star Trek movie is to work they’ve got to take some chances. I actually like Gary Sinise as Bones, and I like Matt Damon in anything, but they’d be better off NOT making this a star-studded epic. Get back to basics and reinvent the universe along lines of (a) continuity with the original series and (b) a logical but creative take on the Star Trek universe.
The thread title, really, is a mistake in itself. Even if you hate the casting choices, you can’t stick a fork in the Star Trek series and say it’s done now. The Star Trek series has been dead for years. They haven’t made a movie that was worth watching since “First Contact,” and really, out of ten movies only three were any good at all. (I know I’m in a small minority but I think #6 was a terrible, terrible movie.) The last two television serieses were not generally well regarded. This franchise is at a nadir. If they’re going to resurrect it it needs to be a very fresh take… just as “Wrath of Khan” completely rethought the direction of the first movie, and came out with a hell of a picture.
