Matt_McL for MP Verdun-St-Henri 2000: Continuing Coverage

Well, the party’s executive has officially nominated me in this riding after the famous guy said he wasn’t going to run. On Wednesday I have to go to the returning officer and get the forms and kits, which are due Nov. 5. I have to collect 100 signatures from people in my riding asking for permission to run. Then on Thursday I have to go to a meeting to find out about the (drumroll) press conference on Friday. Oy gevalt!

Fight the good fight, Brotha matt.

I’m of the opinion that this whole endeavor of yours is just neat beyond words.

Nov. 5? How can there be a deadline when the PM’s not dropped the writ yet?

whatever - have fun, and best of luck!!

Although I am an American, and disagree with nearly every one of your positions  , best of luck to you. It’s easy to have convictions, but it takes more to do something about them.

Matt, I have just two words…

KICK ASS.

(Okay, that was really eight, no wait… 16)

All I have to ask is, how big is the mansion, what’s my expense account, and will having an American boytoy… er, I mean, houseboy… er, I mean, “maid” cause an international fervor?

Esprix

I can only echo pldennison; I doubt there are many issues I agree with you upon, and I couldn’t vote for you without breaking several laws, but I wish you the best of luck.

Bonne chance, Matt! (Uh, what party? Maybe I don’t need to wish you luck…)

I am sending in my absentee ballot, but unfortunately I’m not from your riding, or even your province.

Good luck, Matt! Here’s hoping you get a chance to be the conscience of the people and the State when facing the implacable forces of corporate globalisation!

I’d vote for you if I suddenly found a job in Montreal and learned French really fast and packed my stuff and moved to Montreal in enough time to not miss the election and found an apartment and wasn’t thinking about voting Green anyway… uh… I sense a slight problem there. Anyway, I’ll be watching the election results closely.

It should be interesting! You could do what my mom did and see how many twelve-year-olds you can dragoon into painting election signs. BTW, are the election signs going to be the traditional NDP fluorescent-orange-and-black that I have nightmares about, er, remember fondly from my childhood?

What pldennison and John Corrado said. Best of luck, matt.

And remember…when you’re kissing the constituents’ babies, look delightedwhen they upchuck on you.

Thanks for all the good wishes  Ooh, just reminded me I have to call up the returning officer and get the elections kit. 'Ta!

And Esprix: No mansion, just a crummy apartment in Ottawa, and that’s if I win. Of course, I will be too pure to take advantage of the free plane trips and whatnot. (I’m taking the goddamn train to Montreal. It’s only two hours, dammit.)

I’ve checked the Alliance Party’s list of candidates and couldn’t find your name anywhere. Must have spelled it wrong.

Well, good luck anyway!

The Alliance? Ew no no no! Ick! No, they’re the extreme rightwingers. I’m a leftwinger, and I’m running for the NDP.

I shouldn’t have left out the :D.

But really, good luck!

Well then, you are in absolutely no danger of ever being elected to a position of influence or power. But I guess it beats working at McDonalds or Lafluers. Good luck with that ;).

[anecdote]

I was in Vancouver during the last federal election and up until the last two hours of returns one riding was evenly split between the Marxist-Leninist and the Natural Law parties. It eventually went Liberal.

[/anecdote]

NDP? I guess anything’s possible.

Oh my goodness! You’re serious? Time for me to go bug ALL my friends that live in Verdun…

Well, good thing I’m not running to win. I’m running to bring a voice to the debate, show that the Liberals and the Canadian Alliance don’t make up the whole of the political spectrum.

LaurAnge: Please do!

Good luck, matt_mcl

I admire people like you. Best wishes.

Now that PM Chrétien’s dropped the writ (general election’s on November 27), I imagine Matt will be busy.

Here’s some info from Elections Canada on the Verdun Riding where Matt is standing for election. It includes a map, profile of the riding, and the election results from the 1997 general election. (The Liberals currently hold the seat.)

There’s no info yet on the candidates - will be included once they file their official nomination papers.

And, for our southern friends in particular, here’s a link to the party Matt is running for, the New Democratic Party of Canada.

If I find anything else of note, I’ll post links.
