Actually, if there is an upset what will happen to the polling industry? Assuming no chicanery, of course, an upset will decimate confidence on the polls, no? Especially after 2000, would they be able to make a full recovery? Will they need a bailout?

Obama might drop a real clanger tonight. But really, absent something really interesting, it’s all over for McCain.

Hmm… here’s a thought: suppose a few days before the election, McCain suffers ‘a bout of ill-health’ and withdraws in favour of Palin? Palin, despite her flaws, is massively more popular than McCain. So McCain might win by losing.

Why would he do this? He is not running so the GOP keeps control of the Oval Office. He is running because he wants to be president. It has become his ambition to become the POTUS, and I have a feeling he would say “Fuck Palin” before he would ever, ever consider stepping aside to allow her the chance to win. Your scenario is McCain losing by losing, and he would not dream of such a thing.

I’m not sure he can hand off the nomination like that. It may come to pass that the convention delegates must select a new nominee. About the best he could do is run, and promise to resign the Presidency.
