Perhaps instead of looking at you they were examining their own ugliness. Folks who will openly call another person ugly usually do not have redeeming personalities themselves. They might also have had a different definition of beauty, though I’m tending to the thought that any such definition that left you ugly is either extremely removed from what this culture values (a good case study of which can be seen from your picture) or invented for the purpose of being cruel to you.
And as if your face weren’t enough … anyone who didn’t check the main page there gets five lashes.
