Michael Flynn's Shining City on the Hill - For Christians Only

I became convinced years ago that there are people who enjoy poking trolls with a stick.

::: gets up from comfy chair :::: Excuse me, I think my popcorn’s ready…

I too am completely shocked that this right-wing asshole of a troll doesn’t understand what he’s read.

Some seem to think that the only way to have integrity and morality is by having a strong religious conviction. This wrong on so many levels, and it’s scary.

So without strong religious conviction a person would lie, cheat and steal. Or maybe rape, pillage and kill as well.

I’m agnostic, and I have the integrity and morality to not try to force beliefs on others. If a person with strong religious conviction thinks that’s the only thing stopping them from hurting others, that person needs to be in a psychiatric hospital STAT.

It’s actually quite a nice and thoughtful article about the philosophical flaws of “civil religion” and “ceremonial deism”, and the ways that such generic religiosity fosters the heretical and anti-democratic attitudes of “Christian nationalism”. I don’t think webwarrior understood the authors’ viewpoint at all.

They are saying that Americans should stop performing rites of “civil religion” in the name of a “generic ‘god’”, because there’s no such thing. We should run our secular democratic government on a secular basis, without trying to tie it to religious faith or expression (no matter how generic), and should practice our personal religious beliefs in our capacity as private citizens.

I don’t hate “anything” Trump. I mean, kudos for getting not one but two covid vaccines on his watch. Sure, he didn’t do the work himself but he supported it in an appropriate manner for the leader of a nation. I could probably come up with one or two other things he’d done I’m happy with.

That doesn’t erase that I detest the man himself. Now, I never hear anything about having to like the PotUS on a personal level. I don’t judge them in that manner, I judge a PotUS on his effectiveness at running the nation and promoting national interests. He could actually be Baron Harkonnen and I wouldn’t give a damn as long as he does the job he was elected to do.

Aside from personal dislike, though, and despite a few things he’s done I’m OK with, I do not think Trump represented me or my interests, and I seriously question whether he did a good job as PotUS. That doesn’t make me a “peasant”, a “liberal”, or an “idiot”. It means I have a difference of opinion with many Trump supporters. That is supposed to be OK in a democracy. The day it is not is the day that America as originally conceived dies.

I will defend the right of other people to disagree with me on how to run the country. I am no longer confident those on the other side of several issues will consent to agree to disagree. That troubles me a great deal.

Which is pretty sensible.

Which leads me to the question: Is our esteemed colleague meta-trolling here, or is he just that fucking stupid?

It is possible to be both

Strong religious conviction crashed two jets into the World Trade Center.

Why does it list Jew as separate from Jedi? Have they never heard of Shmuley Wan Kenobi?

Tell me about it. Space lasers, too!

Just going by Baby Yoda’s consumption patterns in The Mandalorian, I’m guessing kashrut noncompliance.

The Child lived long long ago- Before the dietary laws were given.

Today’s Jedis carry lightsabers and 2 sets of dishes.

Paging @cmkeller for theological analysis. (I bet Chaim actually does know what the fundamental doctrinal differences are between Jews and Jedis, which is more than I do.)

I know already that you’re a hateful guy, but what in the world do you have against the poor peasants? :scream:

Maybe Flynn actually meant this is a Jedi-Christensen country? As in Hayden Christensen who portrayed Anakin Skywalker in two of the Star Wars prequel films? He just doesn’t want the country to give in to the Dark Side and turn into Darth Vader.

If so, he’s backing the wrong horse.

Jews have giant space lasers, while Jedis eschew lasers and only use elegant weapons of a more civilized age.

Thank you, that is all very clear now. Yup.

He hates liberals. They’re coarse and rough and irritating and get everywhere.

That legit made me LOL. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

You’re quite correct that there is no such debate, at least at the present time. If there ever was such a debate (and I’m not asserting that there was), the conclusion was that the opening proposition in the above quote is FALSE.
