Ghân feels strongly we should make sure enemies cannot cut off our retreat.
(Presumably this means checking the doors first.)
Hraedsig stands from his brief rest and move to the door in the west wall.
“Let’s open this one. Everyone ready?”
Helm back on and sword drawn, with a glance over his shoulder to make sure that Gilraen is safely behind him, Thoroncir nods.
How will you open the door?
See posts 84 and 85.
Very well. Gil-Gandel, Gilraen, Deor, Bitur & Gwaelur study the door for clues as do the two Hobbits. Traps are checked for very carefully. It becomes clear the door will either have to be broken or Knocked.
In order to conserve spells, Deor votes that we should try breaking the door down first.
Well, I have an axe, let’s try taking this thing down.
I don’t have an axe, but I do have a strong arm, so I am more than happy to assist.
Sorry, I forgot to mention they are both stone doors. It is hammer, chisel and pry bar work.
The Dwarves goes to work and in a short time break the frame around the door. It took all of about 10 minutes.
The Door is removed and it leads to a short tunnel and then a square room set like a diamond to the chambers. See the updated map.
The room is nearly spotless except for some recent dust from the door removal. Inside the room is pitch black and no magic or evil is detect yet from the entrance.
Hmmm. Shall we send in the Hobbits, or all go in?
We’ve made too much noise for there to be much future in stealth right now - bring up the light, detectors of various kinds at the ready, and advance in battle order.
Miron leads the rear guard of the 4 guests out in the chamber near the passage out with the magic torch.
The party moves into the room with Gilraen’s bauble lit and and a few lanterns. The room is spotless and very smooth cut. The floor is tiled in a white marble and still gleaming. The floor radiates magic in the middle. There is no evil. The room is empty and no secret doors are located outside of the magic zone after 10 minutes of searching.
What do you do about the 10’ radius of magic in the center?
Are there any markings on the floor, walls, or ceiling?
There are no markings at all.
“I’m sure others are better at recognizing this kind of thing than a simple horseman, but the structure and appearance of this room and the magic in the center make me fear a trap of some kind.”
Do our various experts have any more specific spells to bring to bear on the problem? I assume if there were anything large cloaked by invisibility in this place, we would have bumped into it by now. There could be something small, possibly.
Ghân, are you able to Dispel this magic if necessary? Deor, any clue at all as to the type of magic we are detecting?
Gilraen says, “Both Ghân and I have Dispel Magic studied but what are we dispelling and should we dispel it? If it comes to dispelling though, I have this Ring from Elrohir that improves my chances by roughly 15%.”
Deor has no clue except that it is obvious it has an area effect of a 10’ radius. We know there is no evil.
Gilraen again, “Does anyone volunteer to walk within or should we leave this mystery for later?”
That would be me then, I’ll do it.
“No, Mulligan,” says Thoroncir, placing a gauntlet on her shoulder. “Allow me. It does not appear that your scouting skills are needed here, and I can withstand injury better than you, if any danger abides within.”
My friends, please join me in raising a glass in honor of the Professor, born this day in South Africa in 1892.
