Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game: Fifth Adventure - War in Goblin Gate

Mulligan will move round to the side and point blank the Wraith against Thoroncir with chalcedony bullets

Thoroncir has never been so scared in his life, but he will do anything - anything! - to protect Gilraen. Now he attacks the wraith with all his might, his longsword rising and falling with terrible determination. Now he sees nothing but the infernal foe before him. Now he hears nothing but the princess’s sweet song. Now he feels nothing but the tears on his cheeks. Now he does not recognize his own voice shouting, “Elendil! Elendil and Gilraen…!

Time seems to slow, then stop…

This is getting a little too rough for me- my spells today are mostly area-of-effect. But if I see a wight who looks very, very close to (re)death, or one who tries to flee, I’ll loose a Magic Missile to try to bring 'em down. Failing that, I’m relegating myself to watching the ceiling and our backs for more enemies.

Ghân advises Deor to cast on the Wraith now - before it drains anyone.(Magic Missile should work where many of our weapons won’t.)

Ghân will try to reach Deor to cover him whilst he casts.

Given that the rest of the undead are dealt with, Mulligan will get ready to call for Elfstan if it goes wrong here.

BTW, today is the anniversary of the start of our first adventure together. Thank you all, and especially What Exit?, for a great ride so far. I wouldn’t trade it for anything!

The Wraith now seems intent on Thoroncir. It strikes fast and runs it chilled blade through and exposed part of his left leg. Thoroncir feels his leg grow numb and his scabbard very warm. He has taken another 12 for 19 total. He misses with **Cirist ** with his first strike but his second lands shortly after Gil-Gandel takes advantage of his flank attack to hit the wraith twice. Wounding his spectral undead flesh.

Gilraen with Bauble and now the Rod of Kanotir blazing attempts again to turn this denizen of the shadow world. She is surprised when she fails again.

Hraedsig, not sure what to do, tries again to strike the fiend. His sword will not bite.
Mulligan hits twice with her Chalcedony stones as she calls for Elfstan to help.

Elfstan and Ghân both make their way to the front. Elfstan finds the will to face this fear. He thinks that this must be what grandfather Samwise felt as he entered the tower. Ghân gets behind Deor but feels a fear he has never felt before. He is momentarily stunned.

Deor looks at the Wraith and tries to cast his missiles but it is hopeless, his flee response overwhelms him and he runs into Ghân. Bitur refuses to run but his legs will not let him move forward. He quickly thinks to himself that if Hraedsig cannot hit then this is no foe for him. With a fresh resolve, he turns and keeps a sharp eye out for more of the undead.

Miron is also keeping a watch and cries out, “more of the corpses from the main hall. They are about 100’ ahead.”

If Ghân can keep his nerve he will both protect Deor and cast Faerie Fire on the Wraith.

Bitur will shout out that those of us who haven’t been paralyzed with fear or otherwise rendered incapable of fighting, and like him will be apparently useless in direct confrontation with the wraith, join him up front to protect those valiantly fighting the wraith from the attacks of the newcomers.

Assuming what has gripped him is only preventing him from engaging the wraith, rather than moving in general, Bitur will move 20’ forward to give more distance between the new front line and those fighting the wraith and ready to meet the new corpses. If he is effectively locked in place, he’ll ready anyway, but he’d prefer not to have to engage them so close to those taking on the wraith. It’ll be better for all parties concerned.

And if he has a lot of able fighters backing him up, he’ll move even further up. But he says those who can be effective against the wraith to concentrate on that, since the wraith is clearly our most dangerous foe.

If Deor can regain his focus, he’ll back a little further away from the wights, and use Fireball to thin out those corpses ahead before they can threaten the party.

The wights should be all dead.

Right now we got the wraith and the newcomers.

Mulligan finally realises that the monstrosity in front of her is not a Wight like the others but a full Wraith.

Nonetheless, she steels herself and fires more bullets at it.

Stupid player not reading properly :smack:

Thoroncir is hobbled by his leg wound but continues his attack. The wraith will get to the princess only over his dead body.

On his way forward to set up the new defensive wall, Bitur will exchange Gwaellur’s helm for his, saying:

“I apologize old friend, but we need as much help as possible right now. I will wear your helm stalwartly and when we make it out of this, I owe you a tankard of the finest ale.”

Hraedsig realizes that his weapons are useless against the wraith, so he will attempt to support Thoroncir as best he can. He will Lay On Hands to try to heal the wound in his leg, and mirror his movements so that Thoroncir stays within his Protection from Evil radius.

“Do not fear, good knight! Together we can send this filth back from whence it came!”

Exactly the right course, good Hraedsig. Stand to, all. Fire upon this wraith!

The bold purple underlined people indicate dark crags overhead.

Bitur puts on Rilthol and rallies most of the Dwarfs, grateful for a foe they can fight. Torches, Axes, Hammers and Shields they march forward with Bitur. Víli and Jari help lead the way and Miron and Gellin fall in to help. Deor is still to fearful to think straight but something in Bitur command and Gilraen’s song is getting through to him. That and one Dwarf grabbed him to keep him from running up the North Hall. “Easy lad, tis a fearful fright but we cannot lose our heads or we’ll be losing our lives.”

Hraedsig heals Thoroncir 12 points by laying on hands. He feels Gilraen’s song helping his power.

Thoroncir shielded and buoyed by his sheath Kálthalion, Gilraen’s song and Hraedsig’s Protection from Evil strikes and runs the Wraith through with **Cirist **.

Gil-Gandel hits it where its face should be with his long but misses with his short.
Mulligan fire 2 Chalcedony stone and both hit. One knocks the fiends hood back and reveals a ghostly skeletal visage.

Gilraen attempts once more to Turn the Wraith but fails again. Somehow this creature can resist her and all of her magics she has available.
Ghân’s Faerie Fire lights up the Wraith, visibly annoying it and making it easier to hit.

The Wraith misses this round but pulls hard on Cirist throwing Thoroncir off a bit.

Elfstan is nearly in position to get the creature from behind.

Bitur and the Dwarves hit the corpses. Miron and Gellin harass with arrows. Crossbow bolts fly and then hammers and axes strike. Bitur orders “shields locked, give them no openings!” Deor drops a fireball far enough down the passage to kill most of them. The Dwarves are making short work of the others.

Thoroncir kicks his numb leg up and pushes off the Wraith’s leg. The Wraith slashes past Thoroncir’s defense for 16 (23 total Thoroncir then pulls out **Cirist **and drives it back home to the hilt. As he is doing this Elfstan drives Kkósal bane into the Wraiths back and Gil-Gandel stabs the Wraith in the side with his flaming Long Sword. The Wraith’s cloak and sword drop to the ground with a horrible shriek. Elfstan is thrown back and takes 2 points of temporary concussion damage. Thoroncir falls backwards but Gilraen eases his fall.

Mulligan is nearly out of stones and holds fire this round. She was still stunned by what she saw.

Ghân goes for Gwaelur.

Well done! Five more corpses can surely be handled. Let’s pull the wounded back and let those unhurt make short work of the corpses!

When we front-liners finish off the remaining corpses, Bitur will instruct them all to hold longer, until the word is given from the rear that our band is recovered enough so that it will be safe to regroup.

Having lost almost half of his HPs, Thoroncir lies on the cold cave floor, cradled in Gilraen’s arms, and tries to catch his breath.
