Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game: Fifth Adventure - War in Goblin Gate

If the Troll entrance is guarded, Ghân will offer Mulligan 8 Goodberries and a Herbal Cure (for 3hp).

So what’s the plan?

If I were Mulligan, I’d stay armoured for now after a fleabite like that.

I suggest the four melee fighters prepare to charge in and put paid to the troll. On the off chance, I’m happy to yell into the cave and find out if its prepared to give up. But if it doesn’t, p.d.q., we’ll just have to do it the hard way. Miron, Brin, be ready to follow me in behind the heavies.

I’m ready to charge in. (Is surrendering is really an option here - we can’t tie it up like a tiny goblin, right?)

Why not some (many) arrows first, as I’d suggested earlier?

"*I’ve been hit more times in that armour than I have not wearing it. I am really beginning to doubt whether that armour is suitable for me or whether it is just cursed to get me hit.

Whether I am getting overconfident because of it or not, for the moment, it can stay in my backpack.*"

Random arrow shots? I don’t see that they could hurt. I am ready to charge in front and center. Let’s get some troll.

Who said anything about “random”?

The Troll, he has missiles too, ask Mulligan.

Rüdan says to Mulligan, “Have you exposed yourself as much to creatures like trolls and the undead before you got that armor?”

I make it a habit not to expose myself at all. Let’s see, Orcs, Wargs, Trolls, no Undead I can think of. Only got hit when taunting a group of invisble Orcs, otherwise clean.

I am gifted this armour and suddenly goblins find me an easy target. :dubious:

"Charging in might not be the best idea, my friends. We don’t know what sort of traps are laid between us and the troll since Mulligan really didn’t get a chance to explore the room. I agree we need to face this thing, but let’s try not to lose the battle before it even begins.

Gwaelur halts mid (start of) charge.

“Bitur, you may have a point. But we are running short on time, we know the troll is in there and the troll knows we are out here. Although, it is odd that the troll wouldn’t just charge us now that it knows we are here. Damnit I have been a fool. We need better scouting and possibly some projectile attacks, Bitur is right as usual. As are you Thoroncir.”

How about: shield wall forms up at the door, archers behind. Shield wall ducks, archers fire, shield wall back up to take any return fire. The troll can then choose to get pelted by arrows, come up to the wall for melee, or retreat. If it retreats, we follow and continue.

Bitur agrees with Hraesdig’s plan.

“Though I don’t have spells that can really hurt this troll, I do think I can help: I prepared Shield this morning, and I can cast it on at least one member of the shield wall. As a bonus, it’s only effective against projectiles from the front; it should allow projectiles fired from behind the subject to be passed with no trouble. Worth a try?”

As does Thoroncir. He doesn’t mind if someone else has Shield cast upon himself.

I’m intrigued that Deor has learned how to cast Shield on someone else!

Well, but I thought this was a war-band, not a debating society. Does anyone have a point of order, or do we move to a vote?

Won’t the Troll throw missiles when the shield wall ducks?

Ghân agrees with Gil-Gandel that Shield is personal to the casting MU.
Also if you fire missiles from behind a Shielded ally, they pass through the Shield but then hit the ally.

How about I smoke that oversized excuse for a cess pit out of its hidey hole.

If that cretinous lump of Orc dung wants to sit and cough its foul diseased ridden lungs up in an enclosed area then so much the better.

By this point Elfstan and Miron have returned.

Elfstan, “I thinks that Mulligan has a good idea. Using her smoke bomb might be the safest thing. Either that or have Deor make one of us invisible to check for traps and distract the troll while the sword and ax crew charges in.”
